Tumbbad is that movie that does not have a muscular hero, a heroine, cringy songs, any fight scenes, or anything which a regular Bollywood movie has. That's what makes it truly amazing. And with the story and the horror, and when you realize the deeper meaning, it's a true masterpiece.

@@youknowme2401 According to wikipedia, this movie was in production for 6 years and was made with the budget of 5 crores and it earned 13 crores. This is not including the streaming and tv rights for it.
So, yeah it did return a profit. Not the level of baaghi 3 profit, but enough to produce a sequel and i will definatly watch it in theaters.

Its a masterpiece.
If you watch this expecting some story or scenes then you'll be disheartened. Its a marvellous piece. I wish it was sent for oscars. Its on par with the movie Parasite.
And at the end the film left us audience with greed for longer duration of the film and further continuation of the story. Atleast it lest me with hunger to know more.

Actually it's because of that dialogue that was narrated in the beginning "Tab se devi devta ka shraap tumbbad par baarish ban kar barasta hai". That's why it always rains in tumbbad
Deepak Sharma actually no. Thats what they thought, but the truth was, devtas knew that now that the humans have found out about Hastar, they will get greedy for more n more gold. Which will lead to Hastar touching/biting them n giving them the curse (like of Daadi n his friend Raaghav). N the only way to light off the fire is water. So it rains throughout. The movie has many such deep meanings. U find this by the end of the movie, where his son gets out of the well, n the rain is actually paused (not stopped) to make us understand the true meaning of the rain.

Nope it didn’t. It was just the very first Indian film to feature in Venice n was hugely applauded by the viewers
I have heard that François Truffaut (a great French director and a humanitarian) was walking out of theater after watching Pather Panchali (officialy the best Indian movie till date) and complaining that he couldn't watch peasants eating with their hands. But then my man was criticised heavily and he went to watch it again, this time applauding the vision and craft of Satyajit Ray. So I don't think that Indian cinema was bad at any point of time. Satyajit Ray was also praised by Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and Wes Anderson. Many directors have learnt from his movies about a naturalist filmmaking style.
I'm so glad that unlike all the other nutshells....although all of them deserve being trolled...you made this one admiring this fantastic price of art. Just what I expected ☺️☺️☺️

This was India's golden chance to show the world how creative india is with a great message on 'Greed', and they just IGNORED it.
Instead, they sent a movie which is,
1) Even if it's a biopic, it's exactly similar to 8 Miles, that's why Oscars kicked it out.
2) The main point of Gully Boy was it's Raps, which were in hindi.
3) A slum boy struggles with his life, manages to survive, gets a supportive life partner and finally makes it big in life = Slumdog Millionaire = Gully Boy.
Can they please stop begging for Oscars by showing how poor India is ?

The atmosphere that this movie gives you....is undeniably scary...story,music,vfx...everything is top notch...
Tumbbad was a commercial flop but is a cult classic for sure. Let me explain what layers it has, layers that run deeper than the womb of the goddess (read further...).
1. Hastar has gold and stays inside earth because gold lies deep in the earth. But grains and crops grow above the soil. Hastar is forbidden to touch food as food can be shared among people and satisfy people's need. But gold creates something more than need. It creates greed.
Hastar was so greedy that it had a choice to jump towards grains first. But it went for gold. A choice that became its curse.
Just like in Harry Potter Voldemort chose his own death when he decided to attack baby Harry first (he had a choice between Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom)
2. Risk is always required with greed. Sarkar (the old man who fathered Vinayak) was not courageous. But Vinayak (during his childhood and after his mother dies when he is grown up) seeks monster Grandma and asks her about the treasure. His brave nature convinces her about his inherently greedy nature and hence she tells him about her secret treasure. Remember she never tells that to her own son Sarkar because Sarkar was timid.
3. Indian independence is not merely a narrative device it is a metaphor of young India (pandurang) achieving freedom from age old Colonial greed (ancestral curse of greediness that runs in Gradma, Vinayak and Pandurang).
4. When Grandma tries to eat boy Vinayak in the hut because she cannot touch grain (Hastar's curse spreads to humans too), so she needs to be fed like how Hastar needs dough dolls as offering. She cannot cook also.
Thats why when Vinayak is covered with flour due to kitchen mishap, she doesn't touch him due to the spread out grain flour. She locks his ankle using chains and drags him along to her room and fixes him to the potty bed to unscrew her mouth (which is shut so that she can not bite people) to eat him directly, without touching his flour covered body.
Eating Vinayak' head through potty hole is synonymous of an important reference (read on for the revelation...)
Meanwhile some more metaphors...
1. Sarkar poori zindagi "dhundta" raha par use kucch nahi mila
(Sarkar the old man tried searching all his life but couldn't find anything)
Change the gender

(Government tried to search whole time but didn't find anything.)
Tax evasion and black money... Greed of the rich and the corrupt.
2. Baki Devon ne uspe waar karn shuru kiya. ... Poorti ke Devi ne use apni kokh mein sama liya
(The gods started attacking Hastar and hence the goddess of fulfillment took him back in her womb)
Explains why Hastar has a wounded blood red body. Remember that Hastar's statue is not bloody. Its actually a plump baby statue. But real Hasar is sickly and malnourished because he is starving since ages due to his curse. Bloody becuase he was attacked.
3. Hastar has gold coming out of his loincloth esp. his backside.
Generally Indians kept money in the front of their loincloth in old times. So why Hastar is like that?
Because it's an analogy of a diseased person who is always hungry and can eat piles of food at once but whatever the person eats is pooped out undigested (its called Bhasma Rog or a form of an untreatable disease called Bulimia Nervosa).
Just like Hastar, the coins coming out of backside of his loincloth are cursed... Because its literally Hastar pooping the gold out while he eats dough dolls... He not getting any nutrition from those dolls... They instantly become gold.. Hastar gets no relief... His diarrhoea continues!
Well in old times people traded grains for gold. It includes people working for growing crops and then working out in the market to sell it for money. Such transaction is termed as svarna-bhadra (auspicious gold)... But what happens in Tumbbad is simply aghori easy money.
Remember monster Grandma trying to eat Vinayak through the potty hole?
Poop has a deeper reference in Tumbbad.
No wonder that poop money is abhadra (insidious) and Pandurang eventually rejects it!
4. Why does Hastar multiply?
When gods attacked Hastar he was split into millions of particles and to save him Mother goddess took him back into her womb in his destroyed form (uncountable particles). So there are many elemental Hastars in her womb each hungry of food since ages.
They appear as per the proportion of the food offered.
Greed is infinite so is Hastar.
I can go on and on about Tumbbad.
Tumbad surely has a potential to create a shared fictional universe. zombies, pandemic, cosmic horror, geopolitical drama... It can reach any of those topics if written smartly.

My favorite Bollywood movie ever....good writing subtle foreshadowing....character development...and the constant suspense ....it is literally the best movie (Trivia :The Mom was greedy for only one coin.....The hero was greedy for many......and his son was greedy for the whole source of treasure....see how greed increased with every generation)

Yes, I am glad you noticed how greed has increased exponentially with every generation. This almost genetic trait of greed has infact been referenced in the movies several times. In one of the arguments the mother chastises Vinayak by telling him he is just as greedy as his father is "Hai to tu us harami ki aulad hi." Btw, please note that the mother herself was not greedy, she just needed enough to be able to raise her children. 2nd, the old crone advises Vinayak Rao and tells him "Viraasat mein mili har cheez par daawa nahin karte." She was referring to the treasure and also to this tendency for greed that Vinayak Rao seemed to have inherited from his father (also forefathers) and has whole heartedly accepted it. As a matter of fact he does not even think of this as greed he thinks of it as courage, referenced in his conversation with the money lender "Tum hisaab rakho, main saahas rakhta hoon." In this movie greed has almost been treated as a genetic trait that gets bolstered by parenting. For example Vinayak has inherited his ancestor's greed just like he has inherited his father's light colored green eyes (plz note that green is also the color of money and envy). And lets say that even if greed is not genetic but then Vinayak also created an atmosphere of moral degradation within his own family. When his son starts to show an interest in his mistress instead of chastising him and realizing the error of his own ways Vinayak encourages him by taking him to a brothel.
Tumbbad was an exceptionally well made movie. It was truly a labor of love. From cinematography to script to music to even clothes and sets everything was impeccable and true to the time period. As far as script is concerned it is thematically similar to Guillermo del Toro's movies where the supernatural element in the story is not as scary as the people themselves are. Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water are great examples of the genre. Two of his movies Pan's Labyrinth and Shape of Water were even nominated for the Oscars and Shape of Water won it as well. And honestly Tummbad was a much better crafted movie than The Shape of Water. I feel sorry that this movie didn't receive the box office collection that it should have.

I generally don't watch movies in theater but for this one I knew just by trailer that it will be awesome movie so i went to theatre. And i was shocked that on it's 2 day of release theater was empty there were only 7-8 people including me and my brother. By the way review is good as always.

You are very lucky that you were able to see this film in the theatre, I did not know about this film in October 2018 otherwise I would have definitely seen this film in the theatre, even after 4 years I still regret why someone did not tell me about this amazing movie, I saw and heard this film for the first time in 2019.
I just watched this movie in theaters, and it's great that they decided to re-release it. I'm glad I didn’t miss it this time. It’s a really good movie.

@@stilllearning6252 Please watch it in theaters and take others with you, don't wait for the movie to be released on Netflix or Amazon Prime. If a movie does not make money in theaters the producers will have no incentive to make good movies like Tumbbad. Even Ekta Kapoor used to make good TV serials when she started her career but none of her earlier good efforts made any money and then she started making K drama shit.
