I never compare the people in this region called Taiwanese to the people in the mainland called Chinese, cuz they are all Chinese. If I do want to distinguish, I’ll call the people in Beijing as Beijingese, or Shanghai as Shanghainese to compare to the people in Taiwan as Taiwanese, which makes sense that if you wanna make a comparison, always compare at the same level. The taiwan island is a region or a province of the whole China, hence you can not separate the people in this region as an individual sovereignty citizen from the mainlanders! If I personally see a Taiwanese and greet on each other, if he or she asks me where I am from, I will say that I am from Shanghai! Simple as it!

There are more to that. Before Dec 15, 1978 when the US recognised One China Policy, Taiwanese were official Chinese to the Western world because the US said so. They still are in many respects unchanged. They have their own passports, even their language which is Mandarin 国语 although they also have Chinese 中文 in parallel. In the US the majority of Taiwanese call themselves Taiwanese. Half a million migrated to the US in the 80s and 90s, already in their third and fourth generations. US High schools classes and scholastic tests are still called Mandarin. But university classes are Chinese.

It's not succession because the KMT that occupied Taiwan is the opposition to the Communist Party. The KMT was never a part of the CCCP, so what are you suggesting that they've "seceded" from?

  • @Zerpentsa6598
    @Zerpentsa6598 9 місяців тому +112

Immediately after the retreat of the KMT to Taiwan, everyone of the new Taiwanese was indistinguishable from Chinese on the mainland. Even the Taiwanese who had settled in Taiwan for generations often had strong links with families in Fujian and spoke the Min Nan dialect of Fujian. Over time, Taiwan had tried to bring up new Taiwanese to think they are different from mainland Chinese. Like some schools in Hong Kong, Taiwanese were taught carefully edited history and culture. Needless to say, a lot of it was distorted and truncated. The most important of the distortions is the place of Japan in China, and particularly Taiwan. Japan is portrayed as a benign, and even good Intruder rather than an invader. Many of the DPP politicians have strong links with Japan as many of them had parents who served Japan when Taiwan was a Japanese colony. Many even adopted the Japanese way of life. But many Chinese do not share this, so the DPP is careful not to go too public with their pro-Japanese views. But anything which is anti-China is bread and butter to them. We need to understand that the independence movement is not really to benefit the Taiwanese as much as to serve the interests of America and Japan.

    • @euanstokes2828
      @euanstokes2828 9 місяців тому +3

So the difficulty with that logic is it buys into a few falsehoods.
      1. Language and culture are not the same. I am Scottish, I speak English but trust me there are significant cultural distinctions between Scotland and England. The same can be true of Taiwan.
      2. Culture and identity are not the same thing. I don't actually think many Taiwanese people have much of a problem with being seen as culturally of Chinese origin in the same sense that Cypriots and Greeks can both see themselves as being descended of ancient Greece without one country being illegitimate.
Taiwan forging its own country and identity does not have to mean Taiwanese people becoming more and more different China, but Taiwanese people see preserving their democracy as more important than wider ideals of Chinese territorial integrity.
      3. The situation you described is basically how cultures change but there doesn't necessarily have to be a subject, nor is it necessarily wrong. By that I mean, Taiwanese culture and identity is drifting from China and noone is denying that, but you kind of just assume that the US and Japan are the ones doing that, which doesn't have to be the case. The view of Taiwan being separate from China isn't necessarily historically incorrect either, it was autonomous for much of its history and in open revolt for a lot of it too, you have to really bury your head in the sand to argue that Taiwan is as core to China as, say, Hebei.
If you apply this logic universally there are many countries that shouldnt exist. Austrians saw themselves as Germans until after WW2. Czechia and Slovakia were content being united until the Velvet divorce. Singapore also doesn't see itself as Chinese.

@@choifayue9848 Lets acknowledge some facts here.
      1. Both the USA and Taiwan have made their position clear - they want the status quo to continue.
      2. China is the only one who wants to change how things are.
      3. Taiwan absolutely has agency in this situation. It could join China tomorrow and the US wouldn't be able to do anything. If China wants Taiwan back peacefully it has to convince Taiwan to do do, which Taiwan uas made clear wont happen.
      4. China has not ruled out force in taking Taiwan.
How can you acknowledge these facts and still say China is peaceful here? The fact is Taiwan is not in a rush to settle this - why would they be? Taiwan has basically everything it wants - a good economy, democracy, a functioning trade relationship with the west even if its not official and a virtual guarantee from the USA. Plus its virtually uninvadable. The irony here is when China insists that 'time and momentum are on our side' Taiwan's response is 'bet' because theyre more than happy to wait this one out.
The truth is time and momentum are not on China's side. They have until about 2027 until the US navy upgrades and becomes insurmountable and their economic situation worsens, after which Taiwan will be independent forever. Even now I give China a 5% in an invasion.
If you want to wait this out Taiwan would happily oblige.

Really gives a real perspective of both China and Taiwan what's is it really like in both places. Just show how people in both places are just going about their life daily to make a living and make life better. Just like the rest of the people in the world. China is not evil as how the Western media portrayed and Taiwan is not oppressed as how media wants you to believed.

    • @jonathanchang1574

That depends on what you mean by "oppressed". If you mean that China is threatening to enact war, take possession of economic interests, conducting military exercises and skirmishes around the border, then Taiwan absolutely is "oppressed". If you think oppression must look like Taiwanese citizens living in constant fear, then I guess you wouldn't think so just judging by a UA-cam video.

The reason why China forced unification of the country is simply to understand territorial sovereignty, not national unity. As long as Taiwan's territorial sovereignty still belongs to China, China has the right and obligation to unify Taiwan, which has nothing to do with whether Taiwanese people are Chinese or not.
If Taiwanese people are not Chinese 🇨🇳, and Taiwan's territorial sovereignty belongs to China, then non-Chinese Taiwanese people are invaders occupying Taiwan, and China should destroy Destroy the invaders and reclaim Taiwan. The basic principle that Chinese people 🇨🇳 are not against Chinese people 🇨🇳 is that the nationality of all ROC citizens is Chinese, and the nationality of ROC citizens 🇹🇼 in Taiwan is also is Chinese 🇨🇳.
Therefore, the principle of peaceful unification is that 🇨🇳 Chinese people are not against 🇨🇳 Chinese people. How difficult it is to be a Taiwanese person who is not Chinese🇨🇳 :
    1. Renounce citizenship of the Republic of China🇹🇼.
    2. Establishment of an independent Taiwan.
    3. Abolish the Constitution of the Republic of China🇹🇼.
    4. Building Taiwan's constitution.
    5. Become a legal citizen of Taiwan.
    6. Ask the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait if they agree🤓

That is some absolutely blatant mental gymnastics there. You basically admitted that you are willing to completely ignore the wills of the Taiwanese people simply because you buy into an irridentist narrative of sovereignty.
Like seriously, Taiwan used to be legally Japanese territory, if it hadn't been handed back, would you say its rightfully theirs? If your answer is yes, your a blatant imperialist. If your answer is no, then you at least in principle believe that people should be able to determine what happens with their pwn communities, so why not allow Taiwan the same right?
The reality is whether Taiwan stays or goes, Chinese people wont be affected, and the fundamentally principle of democracy is that those who are affected get the final say.

It would have been nice if freedom and justice were comparison topics in the video. Living in Taiwan, I can share my opinions without any fear. He also mentions a better work/life balance in China. That might be true for him, but it's not true for the factory workers at Shein that work 18 hours a day without weekends. I would not want to part of country that was controlled by a dictator. Even if I could live like royalty, I would not want live in North Korea, Russia, or China. Saying that foreigners should not get involved in local politics, is his way of turning a blind eye to the evilness of the CCP.

If an American, Australian, Indian, or any other region that was once controlled by the English, wanted their country to be reunited with Britain again, they would be ridiculed and laughed at too. Taiwan has never been a part of the CCP, therefore, they can not claim that own it. It is the same as North Korea claiming they own South Korea. If someone from South Korea wanted to South Korea to be annexed by North Korea, he or she would be treated badly too.@@丁丁-h8e

Your comment about the Taiwanese parking officer on the 3:05 mark shows that you are full of prejudice against Chinese. That parking officer was merely doing his job; he is no different from those parking officers in other countries. If people park illegally, they deserve to be fined! Who are you to come to China (Taiwan) and start criticizing? Don’t come; stay away!

    • @L-K-K

He said the officer was just doing his job right after making the observation of giving tickets left & right. I don't know what you're complaining about. Why are you so sensitive that even an observation is taken as a slight.
Unless you have been to every part of every country you can't know whether there are places where parking officers ignore illegally parked vehicles. It's merely a cultural difference that is bound to occur. Now if he had gone on to critise how it's wrong for the parking officer to be so strict, then & only then would you have a case.
Lighten up buddy. Every place has its pros & cons, and even the pros & cons are all relative to the observer.

@@Shekumanstravel thats an incredibly contentious goal. Throughout this video you have demonstrated many cultural similarities between China and Taiwan, but I dont think anyone in the pro-Taiwan camp is denying that the two are incredibly linked. You have addressed this topic in the most Chinese way possible - without actually asking a Taiwanese person how they see themselves.
Without addressing this fundamental question of identity it is impossible to understand why Taiwan wants independence. Because the way the Taiwanese see it is that no matter how spiritually and culturally connected China and Taiwan are whether Taiwan is governed independently and as a democracy or as part of Chinas has sincere, real world impacts.
I am really sorry but its hard to not see this video as politically motivated, especially when in the comments you have expressed your support for near-propagandistic ideas.
