The 1979 Cessnock 4 day, I could hear this bike roaring up behind me. Then a big whistle ( Geoff wore an open face helmet)and you knew it was Geoff wanting to overtake you. It was a really gnarly uphill, I moved to the left and watched him pass in awe of him. How's he do that so fast?? Another race at '79 Brindabella 2 day near Canberra , Geoff's Maico had ignition problems and he dnf'd Got the bike going for day 2 to ride behind the pack. There was this impossibly steep hill in the first 5 minutes of the track and a few of us dnfer's took up vantage spots on the hill. All the better riders like Rob Haskins , Phill Lovett, Chris Cater, Laurie Alderton, Alf and his plasterer mate ( sorry) Tregonning brothers etc came through paddling with their feet to make it up. Then a few minutes later, there's this approaching roar coming up through the gears and at the base is just about a 90 degree corner. It was Geoff Ballard and he fair dinkum bunny hopped up that hill doing approx. 5 metre touch downs all the way up ( probably in 3rd gear). So amazing and something I will never forget. We all freaked out.I just wished I had a video camera
The things that Geoff Ballard has done with his shop/riding/race team over the past many years inspired me to start my shop. If my shop can grow to be one-tenth as known and one-tenth as important as Ballards, I'll be a very proud bloke!
When they made GBeoff Ballard they broke the mould and it'll be a long time before we see another like him. A champion rider and a champion bloke. All the best for what ever follows GB. Warren Jack
