    I am a Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the three hundred and eighth day of the war.
    Day 380: March 10
    Last time I told you that Russian forces increased the fire control over the retreat routes from Bakhmut, which caused a spike in Ukrainian losses of cars and armored vehicles. I also told you that there were strong indicators that Ukrainians started to take measures to widen the corridor.
    The freshest reports suggest that Ukrainians managed to not only start taking measures but also achieved noticeable results. One of the most important events that happened here is that Ukrainians established a pontoon bridge in Khromove. As you remember, when Russians were rapidly advancing in this area, Ukrainians blew up the bridge to complicate the situation for Russians in case Ukrainians would have been pushed away. The restoration of this bridge means that Ukrainians pushed Russians far enough from Khromove to start using the main highway that connects Bakhmut with the mainland. With more roads available to them, cutting supplies becomes exponentially more difficult.
    The first reason why Ukrainians managed to push Russians away is that Ukrainians have successfully entangled Russians in urban fighting. Today a lot of sources confirmed that Russians started storming the AZOM industrial area. This is the most fortified part of the town, comparable to the industrial area in Mariupol. It has a lot of workshops and tens of floors underground, which require significant resources to control and assault. AZOM is the most favorable place for the Ukrainians to give the next fight.
    The second reason why Ukrainians managed to push Russians from Khromove is that Russians temporarily shifted their focus to Dubovo-Vasylivka. For many days they had been trying to establish full control over this small village but were unable to assume permanent presence because Ukrainians controlled too many checkpoints around the settlement and were constantly firing at them. That is why over the last 2 days, Wagner forces have been conducting more than 30 assaults per day only in this small area. It means that more than 35% of all fights around Bakhmut were taking place here, so it is not surprising that their success here came at a cost to their operation somewhere else.
    At first glance, it seems surprising that Wagner forces decided to sacrifice their progress around Khromove, where they deployed their most elite formations in an attempt to encircle Bakhmut. However, as you remember, Ukrainians have reportedly started preparing for a counteroffensive operation in this region, and one of the focal points of their plan is precisely the area around the Sloviansk highway. A lot of Russian sources reported that one of the main axes of Ukrainian advance would go along this highway, and there are a lot of indicators that Ukrainians have gathered a noticeable amount of force near Minkivka. With that in mind, we can see that Russians are trying to establish as big a buffer zone as possible in order to secure their flanks.
    But Ukrainians delivered a huge blow from a completely opposite side. Several days ago, a huge explosion was reported near Kurdiumivka. Later it was reported that Ukrainians tested their new highly destructive weapon on Russian positions. Today DPR officials confirmed that Ukrainians started using JDAM bombs. A JDAM bomb is a precise guided munition that is capable of striking targets up to 40 km away. As you can see, one such bomb practically destroyed half of Zelenopillia. This means that 8 such bombs can completely clear the region and open Ukrainians the way into the highlands, and once Ukrainians move their equipment here and establish full control over the high ground, Wagner forces will face an unprecedented threat.
    However, this view is not shared by NATO Chief, who remains convinced that Bakhmut should fall within days. Other high-ranking military officials are saying that Ukraine needs to step back from Bakhmut because it bears no strategic significance, so Ukrainians are just fighting for a useless city at the expense of their counteroffensive operation in the south. Ukrainian officials state that NATO does not fully understand the situation in Bakhmut and undervalues the reasons why Ukrainian commanders decided to focus on this region. The Institute for the Study of War sides with the Ukrainian side and evaluates that the Battle for Bakhmut became a strategic effort because the Wagner forces started increasingly using their best troops in an attempt to finish the Bakhmut story. This means that Ukrainians can reduce the most capable Russian assault formation, which will favorably influence the coming counteroffensive.

      The fact that there's different ideas of strategy being publicly stated could be intentional. As for Stoltenberg his job is to make things seem worse than they are to advocate for more $$. These Military officials know very well psychological warfare & reverse phycology. Whoever even if these are true opinions its just an opinion that has no effect on the support. America has already stated they will stay in the fight as long as possible & I don't see any leader in the West today or the future breaking that Commitment. In fact the US needs to honor that promise for many reasons. Personally I think a lot of what's being said in the News by these Military Officials are half truths & a lot of there commentary is targeted towards Russia's leaders.

      This is big.
      HIMARS is an entry-level weapon as far as the USA is concerned. This is why you never heard of it for 20 years during the Afghanistan war.
      JDAMS is a high-end weapon used all the time by the US Air Force. It's the new sexy. A bunch of JDAMS bombs will tear right through the Russian lines.
      This is more valuable than ATACMS.

      @@protorhinocerator142 There are no wunderwaffes in today's world. For every horrible weapon the Russians can find an even more horrible and deadly one. Purely hypothetically, Russia can reach any object on U.S. territory with hypersonic missiles from submarines. To begin with - in a non-nuclear version. These missiles cannot be shot down by U.S. air defenses. The problem is that there are few such missiles available, and tens of thousands need to be made. Now the factories in Russia are actively transitioning to three-shift operation. Preparations for a major war and the deployment of global weapons production have begun. Normally, Russia would never do this, but the attack on the North Streams demands a response. I wouldn't want it to come to that. But there is a possibility that it will be necessary to destroy the communication cables running along the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as to shoot down the American navigation satellites. This will cause a financial and economic collapse inside the aggressor country.

      @@protorhinocerator142 Do remember that’s it’s not all roses however! Using JDAMs does necessarily risk your planes to fly them near to the target - they cannot release from high up because then AA/SAM sites will definitely see the planes and shoot them down.
      I’m not saying they’re bad. Far from it! Just need to be careful with them and make sure all S-300/400 systems are destroyed before using them near an area

      Not true in absolute terms. Some commanders in the field are so obsessed with what they see in front of them that they miss the big picture. It happens enough In actually combat. That’s why wars can’t be successful directed from a static position on the front. Leadership needs a full, 360 degree view.
      Furthermore, if you’re fighting a war largely being financed by someone else, you sure need them to understand your logic to keep the means to conduct that war flowing. Vietnam is a perfect example of people not seeing the value in what you’re doing.

      but they do stand out from others like a wonder weapon.. himars was one such weapon and proved the comments "himars wont change much" wrong, because it did change a lot, it was the weapon that began the next phase of the war where ukraine gradually switched from defensive to more and more offensive attacks. himars also made kherson and kharkiv counter attack possible. Himars WAS a wonder weapon, it changed the pace and flow of the war drastically.
      add another wonder weapon here, another there, and it adds up to changing the dynamics completely, making winning possible. every one of them gives a new capability to ukraine, some even that even russia doesnt have. whats funny is that if ukraine had russia's cruise missiles, planes, ships, and artillery, they would have won this war. ukraine is giving almost an equal fight with only one arm while russia is fighting with both hands.

      @@traumflug 3 weeks isn't that long. And you may be overlooking the power of speculation.
      If there's a conflict in the Middle East, it will disrupt the supply of gasoline at the pumps in a couple months. But prices go up today in anticipation. Like the "futures market".
      If the Russians know western tanks are coming in 3 weeks, they may put a hold on any intended actions they were going to do in 3 weeks. When you know you're about to run into the brick wall you don't wait until the last second. Russian plans always come from top down, so it takes time to stop that train.
      If the Russians haven't adjusted their plans in prep for the arrival of western tanks, they will get mowed down fast.
      And there is no NCO corp among Russian units who can make command decisions and improvise on the fly.
      It could take two weeks before Putin even admits there's a problem. And then another week before he comes up with a plan. And then another week to come up with a new plan because Ukraine's tanks are making progress too fast and screwed up his first plan.
      One of Russia's main military weaknesses (they have many) is the inflexibility of the command structure. It's been helping kill the Russian effort this whole time.

      Eh, a lot of us knew that Ukraine was up to something in Bakhmut.
      It seems, Bakhmut is not the main objective for Kyiv.
      The Khokols are not interested in defending Bakhmut, because their main objective is Wagner Group. Still, it is dangerous for Ukraine to go after Wagner - Jiang Jieshi tried to use his best units to engage Mao, and failed miserably.
      On the other hand, Ukraine seems to have done better than China did - if they can use conscripts to engage Wagner and fix them in place, it shows that the Ukrainians are not fools.

      @@meilinchan7314 If the Ukrainians can fix the best of the invaders soldiers and trade, say 5 to 1 versus Russias best personnel, it doesn't seem such a bad idea? It is a brutal numbers game, but if Ukraine can hold and decimate the Wagners from advantageous positions in Bakhmut, they'll have time to properly train and equip more personnel elsewhere.
      There is a world of difference in "engaging" and defending. It is the Russians who are engaging and who needs "victories" to report back home.
      Why do you think that Ukraine's main objective should be Wagner Group as per se? It was the fascist Russian invaders, who attacked Ukraine, I am sure the Ukrainians would be just as happy to just see these imperialist maniacs drop their weapons and return home. (And pay for all the damage they've done)

      @d3nza482 Рік тому

      Ground's sources for determining bias are highly biased themselves.
      E.g. CNN, which is as centrist as they come, is regularly bundled into "left bias" - same category as Democracy Now and Jacobin.
      Meanwhile, The Epoch Times (literally a Falun Gong cult media wing) will be placed into "leaning right" instead of far right.
      Or how Ben Shapiro will be labeled slightly more reliable and less to the right than Tucker Carlson, while Joe Rogan is somehow a paragon of centrism (also a paragon of misinformation). Gutfeld being more reliable than all three put together. Also, more left than Carlson and Shapiro.
      And then there's the issue of "balanced center" being represented by media specializing in business news.
      I.e. Capitalist view being the default and good and somehow between left and right - though it is actually opposite to socialist, communist and various flavors of left anarchist ideologies. Left anarchism being the actual far left.
      As if the whole thing is viewed from the point already shifted to the right...
      Which is why all the sources treat Yahoo or TMZ as if they're In These Times and CNN as if it were PRAVDA.

    I think that a large part of what makes Bakhmut significative is that Russia made a big deal out of it. They really need a win to show their population that they aren't just throwing manpower at nothing and have been publicising that assault for months. Ukraine simply does not want to give Russia that win. The longer Russia gets bogged down in Bahkmut, the more it saps Russian morale.

    I've heard people say that the Ukranian Army are still in Bakhmut because it is achieving a very high kill to casualty ratio there (circa 5 to 1.) This isn't a strategically important town but it is tactically important in this attritional phase of the war to the Ukranians that they make the most of opportunities to whittle down the numerically superior Russian forces whenever opportunity presents itself.

    • @RichardTaylor1630
      @RichardTaylor1630 Рік тому +2

      I say that it IS strategically important because it represents the buckle in the Ukrainian belt holding the orcs back from threatening Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. • @protorhinocerator142
      @protorhinocerator142 Рік тому +3

      @@RichardTaylor1630 It may not be of much strategic importance for Ukraine, but it's vital for Russia. Mainly for two reasons.
      1. They need a symbolic victory to raise morale, since they can't manage a true victory anywhere.
      2. Putin said they need to take Bakhmut at all costs.
      The second one means they will waste every soldier trying to take it and don't have a mechanism for being smart and just leaving. They're going to continue employing the sunk cost fallacy. Only instead of throwing good money after bad, they will throw live soldiers after dead.
      Russia tied its own hands and is now screwed. Putin is decomposing much like Hitler in his latter days. Ukraine is taking advantage of this weakness.

Russians might not even care for 50 to 1 ratio temporarily. But Ukraine might want to care, if it means it's 1000 of their most elite soldiers that have lost their lives and 50 000 of untrained former prisoners for Russia.

    For whatever it matters, I agree with Ukraine and the ISW's assessment of the Bakhmut situation. Bakhmut is strategically significant because Russia has decided that taking it is worth thousands (tens of thousands?) of their soldiers' lives. Holding onto a position just to trade casualties at a 10:1 ratio (for example, it could easily be higher) is a solid strategy. If Wagner gets sucked deeper and deeper into Bakhmut and its flanks get weak, Ukraine could in one move encircle all of Wagner. Sound familiar? Yep, Stalingrad. The Soviets defended the city way past the point where it was worth defending, because the actual goal was to keep the German 6th Army fully engaged inside the city, leaving their flanks weakly protected.
