Honestly, Renata Tebaldi's voice was the first operatic voice that made me love opera. I listened to her opera studio recordings in the 50's and early 60's over & over again. Arturo Toscanini himself described her voice as 'the voice of an angel' way back in 1946 during the concert for the rebuilding of La Scala. Despite the decline that her voice suffered in 1963, Tebaldi's legacy as an opera diva lives on.

Besides that grand, foghorn strength voice, I love how her singing in her native Italian makes her sound so…real. Singing in your own native tongue just adds that special something that I can’t put words to.
There’s no doubt that Tebaldi gets some truly beautiful notes, in fact absolutely gorgeous. However I would rate Angela Gheorghiu in her film version of Tosca equally wonderful.

She’s a studio singer where they’ve tricked us by enhancing her voice with equipment. It’s a pretty voice, but she’s not comparable to any of the great opera stars like Tebaldi.

Voce potente, intonazione perfetta, tenuta delle note sicura, ma tutto controllato a non far troppo, al servizio dell'intrerpretazione del personaggio. Una vera attrice lirica. Un punto di riferimento.
Decine e decine di grandissimi cantanti e cantante che abbiamo avuto in Italia e non solo . Se la rai trasmettesse una puntata su ognuno di loro andrebbe avanti per tantissimi anni
Secondo me se gli stavi troppo vicino questa ti spaccava i timpani dalla enorme potenza vocale che aveva...e ai suoi tempi si cantava senza l'aiuto dei microfoni, non come si fa adesso nella maggior parte dei teatri!!!!
verissimo, un mio amico mi ha raccontato che nella boheme del 70 (con Bergonzi), nell'atto della frontiera, duetto con il baritono , alle parole "Oh buon Marcello, aiuto"! l'attacco del La naturale acuto era talmente potente che doveva ogni sera allontanarsi debitamente per salvare il timpano più vicino alla fonte del suono.

La Maria era il miglio soprano musicale nel mondo ed attrice dei tutti i tempi,non si confronta con nessuno)) mi dispiace per Tebaldi,ma non è la stessa musicalità,magari aveva la tecnica,ma non cantava con il cuore aperto e non aveva agilità di Maria,nessuno finora la superato))
Vorrei che qualcuno mi spiegasse perché questo tipo d'impostazione di voce "naturale", in cui Tebaldi resta modello insuperato, si è progressivamente estinta... Nessun soprano dagli anni 80-90 ad oggi, con la sola eccezione di Aprile Millo, ha più imparato a cantare così. Perché???
Somewhere during the era of Levine, the Met began to hire singers with a slavic darkness in their sound. They rarely glow in tone, nor do they have anything resembling the natural vowels, but a rather gruff uuuhhh seeming to live under every vowel. I hear their work more than I hear their art.
