I wanted to make this video explaining what I think of as a primary navigational tool for being able to play in any key on the mandolin. We'll explore the octave shape, and how to get around the fingerboard and play in different keys using your index finger as a guide.
Stay tuned for part 2!

Dude, this just unlocked the mandolin fretboard for me! I've known of the closed-position scale for a while, but for some reason, this presentation just clicked with me. I no longer have The Fear when someone calls a tune in a non-standard key. Thanks so much!
A fine look at the mandolin octave Thom and just what I needed as I start this journey. I’m a bit surprised many more haven’t commented as you’ve packed quite a lot of very useful information into this lesson. Theory is too much for some, perhaps. I’m looking forward to picking your musical brain in your other videos. Thank you so much
Great video. I like how you teach and will be checking out all your videos.
This is excellent and very useable for me. Your tremolo is is excellent. I am working on it.
This was very helpful!
Great lesson, thanks
