Nonsense, coal fired power stations are regularly shut down. There are none running at the moment (11.43am 18th June). Even on this dull day, 20% of the UKs power is coming from commercial solar. Most of the time it is windy somewhere and what we need is approx 10x the number of turbines in the various seas around the UK - that and for big oil to be shoved aside as their primary job these days is to offer well funded opposition to anything that might affect their bonuses.

We are surrounded by sea and have lots of rivers, yet only use a little hydroelectric power. Our wind turbines are hugely expensive and badly designed. We could use more roof-mounted solar panels.
Nuclear is not cheap - its costs are hidden in the central taxations system and not within bills and CFD. Wind is very very cheap - £37per MWH Versus nuclear (Hinkley £109) and Sizewell at £95.5.
The issue with wind, solar etc, they are expensive to implement, and their lifespan is short. So reoccurring costs. In addition, the are sporadic, which means they need a 100 percent back up, so not only are you spending on wind infrastructure you ate spending on the back up, so essentially paying for two grid supplies simultaneously. It's well on the way to the whole island being turned into a huge windfarm. I have no problem with my smart meter but I object to the high standing charge on all meters. Even if you can't afford to use gas in winter, you are charged £9 every month standing charge!

@awardwinningcritique6895 Probably higher than yours. CO2 is a trace gas at 0.04% of the atmosphere. 50% of that turns over with oxygen each year and has to be replaced. At least 80% of that replacement comes from all the other animals and processes on the planet, with significantly less than 20% from humans and its industry. As the video says, it's highly likely the heat causes the CO2, and not the other way round. But if CO2 has to be reduced, then you're going to have to stop the respiration of all the ants, spiders, flies, mosquitoes, termites etc. first, and get some sort of control over the many aspects of the earth's tilt / orbit and solar activity. Good luck with all that. Venus has 96.5% CO2 so you simply can't compare. A runaway greenhouse effect can not happen here. It's a con, and it's about time it's exposed.

Wind turbines cost an absolute fortune and are profoundly inefficient. They're also extremely damaging to the environment, far more so than any other form of energy generation. All for under 17% of our supply. What's worse, it's not a constant supply, it's a few short spikes that total up to 17%. This means we effectively have two energy systems operating at the same time, one of which has to remain on stand-by for the few, short spikes that wind turbines actually contribute. We're paying DOUBLE as a result. Those wind turbines by the way, require massive oil powered generators to get them started every time they stop. That's before we get into the environmental damage of manufacture and installation. Incidentally, anthropogenic CO2 is NOT the primary forcing of climate change, and in case people haven't noticed, the planet has NOT been warming for almost 22 years. This 'man made global warming' hysteria is absolute nonsense.
It invests in a renewable grid which gives you access to cheaper electric You build it up front the energy input is free as opposed to squeezing the last ounce of profit from Gas stations all the while gas prices rise. Whilst bemoaning the effect of solar panels on our landscapes, maybe you could also mention what is happening, and further proposed on the beautiful Isle of Skye! It's well on the way to the whole island being turned into a huge windfarm. These monstrosities have a limited life - and, in fact, planning has been sought - and granted - for the existing wind turbines to be scrapped and much, Much taller ones installed instead!
They are not owned, in the main, by British companies, but companies overseas. So we, here, suffer for 'fat cats' from other countries to grow rich!

I have no problem with my smart meter but I object to the high standing charge on all meters. Even if you can't afford to use gas in winter, you are charged £9 every month standing charge!

It depends on what you mean by a subsidy? the wholesale price on renewables has been going down steadily and reached parity with Gas back in 2019, a lot of the current energy crisis could have been avoided if we had more on the grid

No one talks about removing gas,petrol diesel oil .80% of our energy not just converting existing supplies 20% to renewables. Not a chance we are struggling with just the existing grid that will cost £3 trillion as calculated by grid engineers. Wind is only28% efficient and solar about 8% so built capacity is enormous.

@awardwinningcritique6895 Probably higher than yours. CO2 is a trace gas at 0.04% of the atmosphere. 50% of that turns over with oxygen each year and has to be replaced. At least 80% of that replacement comes from all the other animals and processes on the planet, with significantly less than 20% from humans and its industry. As the video says, it's highly likely the heat causes the CO2, and not the other way round. But if CO2 has to be reduced, then you're going to have to stop the respiration of all the ants, spiders, flies, mosquitoes, termites etc. first, and get some sort of control over the many aspects of the earth's tilt / orbit and solar activity. Good luck with all that. Venus has 96.5% CO2 so you simply can't compare. A runaway greenhouse effect can not happen here. It's a con, and it's about time it's exposed.

The UK already has the highest prices for energy in Europe. My parents in America pay a FRACTION of what the Brits pay in the UK, and even here in Austria where our energy costs have gone up, we are still NOT paying what Brits are paying per unit. Vote Labour in, and your energy costs will skyrocket while the economy collapses. Sure, you got rid of the Tories, but now you can't afford to put the lights on. And btw, I detest the Tories, and would vote Reform if I was back in the UK, but voting effing Labour isn't the solution.

I moved to Spain 6 years ago, our energy went up when the Russian invasion happened, but they have been back to pre conflict levels for 18 months, the UK is being ripped off
Wind turbines cost an absolute fortune and are profoundly inefficient. They're also extremely damaging to the environment, far more so than any other form of energy generation. All for under 17% of our supply. What's worse, it's not a constant supply, it's a few short spikes that total up to 17%. This means we effectively have two energy systems operating at the same time, one of which has to remain on stand-by for the few, short spikes that wind turbines actually contribute. We're paying DOUBLE as a result.
Those wind turbines by the way, require massive oil powered generators to get them started every time they stop. That's before we get into the environmental damage of manufacture and installation.
Incidentally, anthropogenic CO2 is NOT the primary forcing of climate change, and in case people haven't noticed, the planet has NOT been warming for almost 22 years. This 'man made global warming' hysteria is absolute nonsense.
