    Love that you’re bringing this up brother. Something I’m going to start doing is anytime it’s a sponsored “review” or embargo, imma start calling them “overviews” just because of fickle and sensitive some of these gear heads are. I don’t think a lot of them realize that the top dogs in the film industry aren’t so toxic around gear and have open conversations around it all without involving emotions into it all. And what’s funny is without “UA-camrs” reviewing things.. people would have to buy everything without zero opinions or educations on the products.. and possibly just waste their money. Like we’re all grown adults. Ain’t no one forcing or telling anyone to do anything.

      Thanks brother. I personally don’t even say the word review anymore haha. It seems like the low end guys in the “industry” that really pick on people on UA-cam and is a form of jealousy that they’re not in the same situation 😂 I always trust your reviews 🙌🏽🙌🏽 your work is insane

    I hear ya, Jason. There actually was a local Aussie YTer that had a video stating "The A7Siii is a Stills Beast" (I have forgotten if that's verbatim but it is words to that definite effect), or another Scandinavian-sounding guy spruiking an unknown brand of CF Express A card, yet in the video he even admitted that he is using a PC from 2017 (a weird confession) and he will leave the speed testing to the pros out there. The video was well-produced but I LoLed at it.

    Credibility is key. If you’re honest with your observations, your target audiences will seek you out. There are many “influencers” producing absolute garbage - it literally took me a few years to shake them out of the trees and cull my reference list to a few filmmakers that I feel have the credibility that I look for; you are one of them (it helps that you are an outstanding, hands-on communicator). Saves me time, money and frustration. Thanks!

    The idea of the UA-cam influencer is essentially they amplify the reality of a product. They are partly marketing and QA contractors :) Part of the product supply chain.

    You are right! I took me 6 months to think about buying the Sony A7S III and found all video reviews on UA-cam and watched them over and over.
    Have owned it for 2 years now and today I'm on version 3.0 and it's just like I bought a new camera. Camera is just a tool and the camera don't safe your ass if you cannot make the frame right. The pizza knife that cost $1000 does not safe the pizza if the baker forgot the sauce. Your eye and practice is more important than the tool 😎
    By the way zero regrets on the A7S III 👌🇮🇸 I don't know shit about making a movie or cinematic content but I love to make videos as I think they are done in the cinema world.
    I'm just having fun, making memories and learn at the same time😎

    Ever since the rise of Twitter where you can only fit so many characters in a single post, people tend to jump to conclusions a lot more often to fill in the gaps. Great video, Jason! I bought the Sony FX30 based on your review, and based on Qazi taking your footage and color grading it. When i received the FX30, I tried matching the settings you had or had discussed that you used but could not get the same results. I was at a loss of what i was doing wrong and why i wasn't getting similar results. I felt i was getting better results off of my ZVE10 than the FX30. I kept trying and experimenting. Then i ran across a young lady who was having the same problem, and she went through the manual inside and out. In her story, she was working with another videographer, and they had to match settings for editing. She asked him what picture profile are you in, and he said; I'm not in a picture profile. These cinema cameras are not designed for picture profiles. I am in Record in Log with Cine/s gaumet color setting. What that does is it greys out picture profile so you can't use it. Using picture profile on the FX30 was confusing the camera, thus giving crappy results as it didn't know what setting to use. Since using Record in Log, the FX30 is an awesome video camera, and I'm extremely happy with it. You are correct is saying the smaller youtubers are more than likely to give a better review than those being paid and careful to rate a company's product. Thanks again, Jason for putting this out. 😃

    I think you make good points in here. The big thing is some will not admit mistakes or even pin comment of the correction even when told. For me thats when i don't watch those anymore or "trust" their reviews. For example go see how many folk said sony a7cR is full frame in 4k60 and haven't corrected that. Sony docs even said the same but have a small disclosure thing i think no one read. Yes we miss stuff but at least on that video pin a comment if you can redo the video. I love B&H but for example i don't trust what they call "reviews". LOL they are trying sell. They are store after all. Good stuff Jason.

    Honestly, I turn down SO many reviews, to date, not been paid for a single review. They products I believe in and enjoy, Ive rejected many offers...if a product has a short fall, it gets mentioned for sure, but one thing I LOVE to do, is try take a product and compare it to an existing product everyone knows, that highlights the difference that a lot of people can relate to.

    Kofi's initial video on the Pyxis was the first I saw. I wasn't surprised that he was gonna let go of his Kx for a Pyxis. From following him, I've seen that he still shoots with old black magic despite having the Kx, and this is basically the same camera with a better form factor. For me after seeing the reviews, I knew immediately that it wasn't for me. That being said, I don't discount his opinion. I really respect the reviews from the camera gear UA-camrs. In general, I think they're more genuine than with other product reviewers. While they can be biased at times, they still provide objective data and that is key. Although some of them can provide fuel for GAS, it's still better to have all the information available to you. I like to see both the positive and negative reviews, we are all adults and are ultimately responsible for products we buy. Regarding Marques Brownlee's reviews of the Fisker and the humane AI pin, I knew those products were crap months before his review, he just happened to be the biggest youtuber to say it.

    I stopped trusting UA-cam reviewers when they all suddenly release a “review” on the same day. I think a review should come from someone who has actually purchased their product, used it for their needs, and talk about their experience using the product in the real world. Some ethical reviewers will state this is a pre-release version, and indicate the restrictions placed on them by the company, and have the decency to call it a “preview” or an “overview”.

  • @clausstahl5413

    Everytime a new product comes out on UA-cam I watch a lot of reviews and yes after the hype is gone I think the reviews of people without a succsessful youtube channel are more informative. For example peter mckinnon NEVER mentioned the wobbling issues with the r5. The bigger the company is it's harder to say something really negativ about a new product when you are a succsessful youtuber because the next product you will not get for free to review.

  • @FelixCervantes

    Fisker lost millions of customer payments. The company was headed to bankruptcy on its own merits. Even though MKBHD may be popular, the average EV buyer does not watch him. What happened to Fisker was caused by a poor product and the lack of internal controls. The UA-camrs switching from a Komodo to the Blackmagic is a joke and probably clickbait. Why would you switch to a camera that gives you inferior picture quality? If that camera was so great, why didn’t they use the Pocket 6K. They gloss over the rolling shutter and say it can be fixed in Resolve which is total nonsense, they probably don’t even understand what rolling shutter is. And Blackmagic RAW is nothing compared to REDs R3D files.

    It bothers me is when a lot of tech reviewers seem to just be free advertising for the company, running though the features of the product and hyping those features, rather than if those features are helpful, necessary, etc. so the review is basically only if the stated features work, rather is the product itself useful. I was just ranting about 360 cams on a mrwhostheboss video. He’s hyping the flexibility, saying you can choose your shot, making it your go to cam but not talking about how it’s going to triple the time of workflow. He’s not lying or being dishonest, he’s just coming at it from a position of how hypotheticaly cool this could be, rather than someone living with the product. Thats certainly not unethical, but I think it does lead people to buy products they don’t need or won’t use.

    • @CharlieVN

      not many people want to "ruin relations" with brands. Insta360 is a pain to work with, but there is an actual way of working with the files that increases workflow only a little bit, I have a video on it, phillip bloom nonchalantly touches on that topic, but that is the way you do it. If only the camera can record direct 360 mp4 SOOC, that would be really amazing..... you cant, but you can batch through studio.

    I think the biggest problem is a review video of a product that is also sponsored by the brand that created the product.
    Another is when a youtuber reviews a product and says "wow the image quality is amazing!"... and as a "professional" i look at the footage and it looks like 🗑️. Average consumer will not be able to tell and buy the product based on what the youtuber said.
    Then there is a thing with brand worship by a lot of youtubers. I think we all get lured into being able to work with brands and then some of us may not want to say the complete "truth" not wanting to ruin future collaboration with that brand.
    Also a lot of camera youtubers dont actually use the camera for professional work outside of just making youtube videos. But to your point, the consumer needs to watch multiple reviews to make a decision.
    👍.

    I agree, watching multiple videos is key. In my UA-cam space we do both reviews and overviews. Especially of knives. I may receive an embargo knife and only overview it. It is important to show ppl a product in 3d so they can decide if they like the look and our description in the hand. But a full review is different. Generally I use UA-cam for opinions just as our parents used reviews in magazines or QVC in the 90s before UA-cam existed.

    Man that point about not being able to see ANYONE else’s opinion on the product and having to say what you feel with no other opinions is so true…. People don’t realize how much they are actually “influenced” we looking at products online or reviews vs having to figure out everything yourself and not even fully knowing what you are missing because you just don’t know lol and then you have to give your review to all of us knowing you could possibly be off base or not knowing what people will say. If I had to figure out a product from scratch with nothing else to look at I’m sure I would miss some many things. Everyone does… it’s just the collective that brings all these flaws together. No single person will find them all
    Also do you ever yell? lol I feel like you are frustrated here (understandably so) and yet you still seem so calm!

    *while reviews help me decide what I want to buy in a said product, but it's not the defining video that will make me say OH MAN I NEED THIS Because he's reviewing it and it works for him therefore it works for me. When ya did the review of the FX30, It wasn't just your video I watched but a few others and after watching yours an a few others I decided to buy it and I love it best camera I've ever used. Product reviews to me are just that reviews from that persons POV an it's up too the person watching the video to take out what that persons saying. I trust your reviews and Although I'm not doing what you're doing but I might want to someday and those reviews will help me later on. I've learned people are going to be critical because either they themselves can't get that said product to review or their just bitter. I live your reviews and what you have to give and I trust that otherwise I wouldn't have subbed in joined your membership if I didn't trust ya*

    I think there are so many great products out there and so many great creators. I agree watch as many video and get different view points and tips and make your choice…..for me I just love seeing new gear even if I know I will not buy it. I have GAS but never really feed it anything but watching videos lol 😂 there are so many great ways to use gear and many great creators, but every one has their own ways. Got to see them all! Love your stuff dude! Keep killing it! #loveyourcreators

    Yeah this only got more relevant with reviews of recent games. I find it hard to believe that we’re in an era where gaming journalists are actually more reliable and less biased than your average UA-cam reviewer. People will try to say that gaming journalists are afraid to give negative reviews because they might lose early access but UA-camrs are arguably even worse in this regard, with the difference being they’re afraid to give positive reviews because their views may go down, they may lose credibility with their audience, and the comments might tear them apart. Any positivity regarding specific games will likely be seen as a paid opinion

    It's a well-known fact that some UA-camrs aren't always honest in their reviews, but it's still good to be reminded. Eventually, more of them will hopefully start being more transparent. I can already see some examples in the comments.
    That being said, there seems to be a contradiction in your argument. You mentioned that you aren't perfect and make mistakes, and you advised watching multiple reviews for a balanced perspective. However, you then concluded by saying to 'trust UA-camrs,' which seems counterintuitive. If one video can't provide a definitive answer, why trust the person?
    The quality of information being shared is often poor, requiring viewers to watch multiple reviews just to get a clear picture. Many UA-camrs receive free products for review without thoroughly researching how the product works. Perhaps they should start by asking the right questions to the companies sending them these items, and then conduct their research from there.
    You mentioned a few reliable UA-camrs as references, which indicates that they put in the effort and research before sharing their reviews. The bottom line is, many UA-camrs are providing their audience with inaccurate information

  • @calebgrahamfilms

    A lot of great points here mate - this really is the paradox of UA-cam - that seemingly there's a lot of filmmakers with large followings who maybe aren't out there in the field day in day out using the tools they're reviewing for paid filmmaking work. Now straight up - that definitely doesnt mean their voice isnt valid. But.. if your income starts to come more so from the UA-cam/review side than the working-technician -in-the-field side - does that start to make it harder to trust those reviews? Potentially - but I guess this is solved by winning peoples trust(like you have with your channel). I think authenticity is key - and people owe it to their audience to be brutally honest and transparent. Good content Jason, keep it coming

  • @TwoTimesRmedia

    Yeah I can understand both sides of this. As someone wanting to do UA-cam full time. If possible, it's tough to break through with so many big UA-camrs getting products before me. I feel that maybe my videos get pushed to the bottom and seen as a lot less valid. I don't only watch one video when I'm researching a product, I watch several and find the consensus. People can be way too loyal to brands that when flaws get discussed instead of attacking the brand and demanding they do better they attack the people who are sharing their experiences and shining light on the issue. How can these companies correct their products and do right by their supporters if they don't know there is an issue?

    You hit the nail on the head when you said it comes down to integrity. It's fine for UA-camrs to have an opinion, but they need to be fair especially when comparing products. What I often see is that reviewers favour certain brands, or they talk up the new products because maybe it's better for the algorithm. They're playing a game to get paid, at the expense of integrity to their reviews. But the said thing is I think 99% of UA-camrs will do this, because integrity doesn't pay the bills. When it comes down to it money talks, integrity walks.

    Very sane take. There is nothing wrong at all with purple being youtubers or filmmakers or creators going in either direction. I suppose it is unfortunately par for the course of putting ones self out there as there will always be an alternate option and opinion on everything. It is typically true that every set that I'm on that the A B most other cameras aside from perhaps production stills photographer systems and lenses are rented. If we are lucky enough to have the money to own a camera for immediate access then it only needs to be suitable for our most common user cases. If that means that you own camera A and sell it for camera B then it is what it is.

    I feel like we see a lot of these hyper positive reviews around Insta360 products. I’ve seen tons of reviews of the new X4 where it’s just praise praise praise but when redditors or small channels review it, it’s actually mediocre or worse in cases.
    I will ALWAYS support the honest reviewer. It’s why I like you, and channels like Fstoppers (who recently spoke on the DJI mic 2 issues) and tell you “hey, this didn’t work, it’s flawed, be aware of these shortcomings!”

  • @JonathanPalfrey
    @JonathanPalfrey 5 місяців тому

    Great video, this is exactly why I started doing UA-cam, I felt some channels were just doing overviews and missing some key facts that should be talked about you’d only spot on a shoot.
    This is why I’ve tried to start structuring my reviews so viewers know what to expect every time, including the bad, the alternatives and who I think the product is for.
    To be fair to most manufacturers, equipment, even the cheap stuff is generally very good and can actually be quite tough to find any glaring issues.

    Personally, I will always appreciate your videos and other filmmakers reviews no matter what. I think a huge point you made did go alongside the fact that the filmmakers who do make a 'late review' do have many references on what to look like, so we can't completely just 'attack' the ones who just dropped just because they have x, y, z. All in all, watch and reviewing other filmmakers will always be helpful because it is just like comparing prices at different stores. Check your options, see what you think, then make YOUR own decision on what you want to do. Great video Jason, always appreciate your insight.

  • @cdavey7654
    @cdavey7654 5 місяців тому

    Well said. I always watch/read multiple reviews for products I’m thinking of buying or just curious about. One thing that people need to keep in mind is there is sometimes variances between copies of a product (i.e. a certain lens for example, every copy of it will not be EXACTLY the same as the others). Another example is that it seemed that some of the Sony a7IV cameras (especially some of the first ones made) were more prone to overheating than others, etc. So not only do you have different perspectives (and sometimes biased opinions) and often different testing methods/conditions, but they are not all reviewing the same exact item…

    Thanks for the interesting video! I think this is a balancing act. I every much appreciate when reviewer disclose how they got the product and whether they are paid for the video or not. That gives a sense their relation to the company. Furthermore, many UA-camrs have a lot of videos online, so you get a feel whether they genuinely look at a product, or just hype a product. Beyond that, I think it is all opinion, but still better than going to a shop where a salesman while give a single opinion and where you cannot see the track record of this person. At least on UA-cam I can multiple reviews, compare opinions, and try to see how their views on the product would affect my experience with the product. I definitely like long(er) term reviews more, than reviews on the release date, they usually give a better sense of a product after the honeymoon phase is over. A review can never be objective, but as audience we like to understand the facts that lead to the conclusion and opinion, and after that it is up to the audience to do what they want with it.
    And on review channels you can find a lot of great other content too. As an example, Vistek is a camera shop, but Dale Sood did an amazingly good video about camera lens testing this week, that is a must-watch for video enthusiasts. To think that sort of content is a now openly available and free is just awesome.

    Very important conversation. When I see a new product come out and all the filmmaker UA-camrs have a video review immediately, I don’t watch them. I wait until some very small UA-cam channel does a review months later. Or a filmmaker I trust like yourself does a review on it.

    • @Edwin--
      @Edwin-- 5 місяців тому

      Yes, that is very sensible. Not seldom the early day reviews are too hastily made too. Not all camera features are immediately visible and require a little study or reading of the manual, but in an early day review that is often overlooked. They can't review all if you have a few hours with a new camera.
