      Numberphile I like the longer videos. I understand the reasons for the shorter ones, but once in a while you should do some longer ones as well. Maybe on the Deep Sky Videos channel?

      Yes I know, but Deep Sky is an astronomy channel and has nothing to do with the "raw" math we find here, or pi. See what I mean?

The execution, commentary, planning, filming and background of this is just stunning. Thank you so much. Clearly, the project took much effort and problem-solving skills and left a sense of real accomplishment. With similar printing, how many digits would need to be printed to completely wrap the entire Earth in paper? How many digits to print paper from Leicestershire to the Sun? :-)

    • @gizsim
      @gizsim 10 років тому

      ***** at 1:35 conversions between number of digits and lenghtscale are shown. 1km of printing displays 1 million/1,69=591,716 digits. So 40,000 km displays about 24 billions digits, and 150 millions km displays around 90,000 billions digits. Now your turn : What will be the radius of the roller of paper in both cases? Better : Assuming thickness t and length L of paper, and starting radius Rs, what is the expression for the radius of rolled paper R = R(L, t, Rs)?

    • @gizsim
      @gizsim 10 років тому

      *****
      And as a even more exciting bonus, what is the error in that expression, if we truncate PI after the number of digits that is printed on the paper of length L, viz. e=e(L)=R(real pi)-R(truncated pi), and what need to be the length of paper (in billion light years) so that the error is 1 cm? And if each digit were a)1 planck length wide b) 0.1nm, what length of paper is needed to "print" the first 1 BILLION digits of pi?

    Brady you magnificent beast! Thank you so much for uploading this. I wanna say it made my day. Easily it did that. My week? Probably so. Probably the best UA-cam I've had all month. I was glued to the screen. Sure, sure the 'main' video was also good. But, for me, that little viddy was the trailer and this is the feature. You gotta love Matt Parker, he's a witty chap. And Brady, just astounding that you put all this together. It's so gutsy and so huge. You showed us something truly awesome. I've been a big big fan since ive found Numberphile a year or so ago, and an even bigger one now. Thanks again, cheers.

    Some People said the guy at 28:52 is CGP Grey, the guy in the picture is wearing a silver/grey watch, it's a pretty slim watch...
    Can anyone rememper what CGP Grey said about wearing watches in the Podcast, I am sure he said something...?
    In that picture his jaket is black so it could be the same guy as in 29:52
    The other suspected CGP Grey sighting is 25:43 but I think his jacket is blue...
    Can we rule out the guy in the green jacket rolling out the paper?
    Some people said he must be one of the younger guys but do we even know his age?

    Couldn't there, theoretically, be an set of infinite repetition (like a repeating 3) within the infinite sequence of pie, if it is indeed a normal number?

    • @massivmojo
      @massivmojo 10 років тому

      Then there would also be a set of infinite 4s, and that is not how infinity works

    • @Melomathics
      @Melomathics 10 років тому +3

      Well, that would be paradoxical, wouldn't it? I mean, then *every other sequence* would have to exist in it, *infinitely*.

    • @HisCarlnessI
      @HisCarlnessI 10 років тому

      sKebess Half of infinity is infinite though, right? And that fraction of infinity can just as easily come from within it, right? So it follows, that if it is a truly random, normal number, it must at some point contain an infinite series of threes, or fours, or anything, and everything else.

      HisRoyalCarlness
      You need to be careful when you deal with infinity. For example, 0.999... =1 but if we could, like you say, add decimals after a recurring number then 0.999...13324 > 1
      If you took;
      - a recurring decimal
      and
      -the same recurring decimal with extra digits after the repeating part,
      then the difference between those two numbers would be infinitely small. And from memory there can't be infinitesimals with a non-zero value in the real number system.

      ObeseYeti Fair enough, hence my original question. But still, there are other schools of thought when it comes to number systems, perhaps the discussion would be cool for a video. (PS: Thank you for responding rationally to my comment. Lately, more than usual, every response to comments I make has contained the word "moron" in it somewhere. Even when talking about something like cooking.)

    At 18:30 he says that "3.141592" may appear somewhere other than at the start. That's not true. It has been proven that there is only a single decimal point no matter how far you go.

    I would have suggested two improvements to the unrolling process , one of which would have required it to be rolled the other way (inside has numbers instead of outside)..
    The first suggestion would not have been cost effective for a whole mile, but would have helped with the unrolling AND kept the laid out sheet dry. I would have used two rolls of clingfilm (one between the runway and the sheet, and one above the sheet. with each cylinder of clingfilm rotating in the direction that allows the sheet to pass between them, and become coated. the cylinder above could also have been used to push the roll away from the laid out sheet.
    The second suggestion would have been with the sheet rolled the other way, it could then be unrolled from the bottom and therefore less affected by wind.
