Wagner's MASTERPIECE: Exceptional Combination Guns

  • Here is an exceptional custom combination gun from Trier, Germany. This combination gun is in 8x57r and 16ga. You may know of the Savage Model 24 or Savage Model 42 and other combination guns, but this Wagner Combination gun is in a different league and remains a mystery. Whatever its history, Wagner's combination gun is no doubt extraordinary. Wagner definitely knew what he was doing. Let me know in the comments if you know more about Wagner.

Many years ago I was in a gun shop that sold all kinds of firearms. There was a Browning combination OU set. One set of barrels was 20 gauge and the other was 30-06. It was well engraved and a work of art. I had a mortgage and three kids, so the $6,000 price tag was out of my range. At that time a 100.00 bill looked as big as a blanket. I love this channel because it is about mostly sporting arms and the art and craft of great firearms. Thx.

The upper parts of these claw mounts can be found on E-gun in Europe for a reasonable price. Since they are not restricted parts you can get them easily. I grew up close to Trier. Mr. M. Wagner was a local gunsmith in the 1880th. I immigrated to BC Canada and have no idea how long he or his apprentices operated after that time, but I shall ask some old gunsmith friends and hunters of the area about him for you. What is totally unusual is the one sided Kersten (not a Greener lock, Greener locks were used on side by sides in the center, where the rib sits. Kersten is the one used on all better bock, over-under combinations). Most of these combination guns have the French hair trigger on the front trigger. Be careful not to adjust that little screw too much counter-clock. Screwing it clockwise increases the hair trigger pull and vice versa. Also rimmed shells for these guns should generally be loaded 10% lower than the rimless versions for bolt actions, even the .318 IR. Full loads are very hard on these box locks.

I was thinking the lighter load also, as with the drilling.

16 bore and 8mm? Perfect! Incidentally 16 bore is totally underrated. Anything a 12 bore can do,a 16 does, for being lighter, quicker and easy on the shoulder.

Just gorgeous. You mentioned that it would cost $10k now, but it must have been a terribly expensive gun back then too. I mean artisans were more common, but still, you wouldn’t have seen a peasant farmer with something like that. It must have cost a bundle for back then dollars, no?

What a rare gun and in such rare chamberings. The sweet sixteen is timeless.the 8x57 is really underrated and underloaded here in USA. The longest shot I ever took on a elk was with a 200 grain speer handload 2500+fps Yugoslavian Mauser. 285 paces open sights.she never knew what hit her.im a 3006 man but the 8mm Mauser is a great cartridge. I bought that Yugoslavian Mauser for 150 dollars and I'd go anywhere with her and not be undergunned.keep up the great work

Attention! It is a break down gun , so it surely needs 8x 57R ( R: Rand- rim) and the noted diameter problem between 8x 57 l and 8x57 lS.

Really beautiful 🫶🏽! And I appreciate very much that you took it out in the wet snow and actually shot it! I’ve been very close to purchasing and/or bidding on a Savage 24 of one configuration or another and having run into a few with nice bluing and nearly zero pitting , guns well taken care of , seeing THIS work of art makes them seem fairly rudimentary. But still , that wonderful sound and feel when the two parts come together ..! Another good video 👍🏽👏🏽💚

Many years ago-the early sixties-I would get down to Pittsburgh and
always stopped into Flaigs Lodge in Millville which is a suburb of
    P'burgh.
They had a lot of Ferlach guns but that is so long ago I can't remember
all of them but remember the drillings most.
I didn't have the money to purchase any of them so just walked around
with my tongue scraping the floor.
Later on after I got out of the USMC and had a few bucks I had them build
me a 7mm RM on an FN action and stocked with a beautiful Himalayan
stock. Sold the gun when I needed some $ like the idiot I am.
They're long gone now but I was lucky enough to experience the place.

The set trigger is quite usual on traditional combination guns, I would have been surprised if there isn't one. A nice piece which I have never seen. Your price estimations for a new made were very humble, you can at least double that. I think the time is still good for collectors, to get such pieces "cheap". It's handmade perfection and art, people are recognizing this more and more in times of mass production.
    By the way,
shooting (factory) rimless ammo instead of rimmed should be avoided, amlost all rimless calibers use around 20% higher gas pressures than their rimmed counterparts. That was made especially for break actions, the lever forces are a little unfurtunate for high pressure rounds in this kind of actions. Especially on the top barrels, that's why there are allways the weakest calibers chambered.

In german weapons magazines , when describing histoiical weapons made by german gunsmiths/ gunmakers, often a book ( three parts ?) called , Stöckel' is noted. It seems, this book is a list of all known german gunmakers/gunsmiths. You may can also ask german collectors society , Kuratorium zur Förderung historischer Waffensammlungen'. Or german arms magazines , Deutsches Waffenjournal ' or ,Visier'.

American loads for 8x57IS are a little bit weaker (if it says on the box 8mm Mauser that means this ammo is weaker, if it says 8x57IS, that is probably European ammo), because a lot of people have even today those older 318. barrels and if they find a brend new ammo now in 8mm Mauser that ammo can't be dangerous, it has a weaker pressure. But I wouldn't try new S&B 8x57IS in this gun or something from RWS, they make even today 8x57I for the people with older guns, so better is to not mix them like that. Nice video 👍

If you can afford that Combination gun, you can afford a pair of gloves. Frozen fingers - not fun.) Several years ago, Tikka brand (Finland) made a combination gun with many barrel/caliber/gauge options. I have never seen one here in the States.
