I really appreciate the pause and lack of laughter that follows. Truly the staple of any good joke
btw if anyone is interested in playing scarface: the world is yours on pc, the pc version requires some weird patch to work so it might just be easier to install the newest version of pcsx2 and get the ps2 iso of the game and run the emulator. The newest version of the emulator has a specific hack that makes the game run well.
Just want to add on that the even with the hack turned on, there are still some graphical glitches in the PS2 version that occur with the game's lighting and shadows. With the right tweaks though the game is like 90% playable with the only issues being graphical.

I had the exact same experience with Monte Python in high school. There were a bunch of kids who would constantly make references to The Holy Grail and it just completely ruined the movies for me. Same thing happened with the Princess Bride because someone would always bring it on the band and orchestra busses in high school and college.

The live-action adaptations of Rurouni Kenshin helped. It brought back interest in the series and contributed to the creator in continuing the manga. Then again they weren't hollywood adaptations.

The bait and switch with the Zelda art style happened again on the Wii U with the tech demo where Link fights a realistic spider, and then we got BotW. The change wasn't as intense or as quick as Wind Waker though.

Garrett, alien3 used poorly blue screened rod puppet, meaning it did physically exist for wide shots and close shots were practical, not CGI at all.

I spent more than a week on the final Sekiro boss and it was making me miserable every time i loaded it. Can't go back to it now.

i think a big part of the movie discussion was the idea of verisimilitude(the idea that what you're experiencing could actually make sense) vs realism. to me, realism is if a movie could actually happen or not. verisimilitude is when people bleed red in game of thrones (mostly). i know it's a fantasy world with dragons and shit, but because people bleed red and nature works the way i know it to, the story is real to me even if it's not a realistic story.
as far as effects go, obviously when something is practical it's so much easier for an actor to react, because it's really happening, as opposed to chris pratt staring at a dot that will later be a dinosaur. sure, a practical effect can look dated, but when you look at the great effects in the thing and jurassic park, for example, they age infinitely better than a 3d model that will be obsolete in a few years.
maybe i'm thinking too hard about this, but it's the kind of thing i like to talk and think about and i like when the boys have these kinds of discussions!

There's only a handful of CGI shots in ALIEN3. Most of the Xenomorph stuff and FURY 161 were practical (ie rod puppet, ADI guy in a suit, matte paintings). All the shots of the creature running thru the tunnels are absolute crap.
Gotta rep for David Fincher and Terry Rawlings--- they created a beautiful looking film that definitely fits the tone of ALIEN.
Alien Resurrection on the other hand is complete trash and Joss Whedon sucks. Loved the podcast as always!
Only movies for film festivals use practical effects still. It's a lot of time doing practical effects when you can just get a bigger budget, have a VFX studio take your drawings and make them turn to life and focus on the acting in the movie and directing that instead of pulling a Stanley Kubrick/George Lucas painfully doing a stop motion set or having a space ship go at just the right speed past a black background or making DIY gore parts or doing expensive robotics for aliens just running down a hall.
Some directors like using practical effects still like how the new (main line) chucky had half CGi and half practical robotics.
Mark hamill's chucky is gonna be cool but the whole movie is going to be CGI... CGI+chucky=ugly during those scenes he was running through the insane asylum in the last movie (where it was half cgi and half robotics)
(I'm also glad that there's two chucky universes still and the original chucky direct to DVD team has permission to continue their story while mark hamill's does his story for the movie theaters)
It's too much time and work when you can offload the work to VFX. End game looked great so VFX is improving.

They remake animated movies because of people who want to watch "cool" movies without it being a cartoon for children or maybe because cartoons for adults are weird. Finally, they're making Akira for adults (rated PG-13).
Derrick acts like the dudes "programing the explosions" aren't artists who work their asses off. Not a good philosophy for filmmaking.

Classic Dr. Ryan can't handle the criticism. Windwaker had a lot of flaws especially the fortress that always felt like a chore and it's the second thing you do after you get off the first island. Also the fact that everyone gets burnt out at the same part of the game where you find the 8 pieces of the triforce because they try to pad it all out. It's a good 3D zelda game but definitely not the best.
I wonder if working in making videos makes it more difficult for the boize to appreciate CG.
I have the opposite perspective, working in CG. Practical effects like dummies and puppets often take me out of a movie.
There is something to be said about live action stunts though
