When I was a licensed handyman, I would ask for a deposit on my jobs. I would also be told I was expensive as a Handyman, so I would tell them they can hire someone else. Like a commercial plumber or electrician and pay a lot more for what they wanted me to do. They would shop around find out I was right and then decide to have me do the work.

Great information! I do and have done custom exhaust on cars for the last 38 years and I don't get a deposit for a job unless I'm using some items that are uncommon as I have the customers car and they generally want it back lol. I'm the proud owner of a branny new Juki LU2810 thanks to you 😊. Works great, my learning curve is headed straight up as I've never sewed a stitch in my life before this

I have only been stiffed a couple of times over the years but really ONCE is enough! For me...unless they are repeat and REGULAR clientele I always get a 50% deposit or the job doesn't start.

I got into marine canvas and upholstery about 2 years ago....bought a sailrite to due my own boats work due to the costs of having someone else due the work. Self taught, really enjoy the process. Took all of 2 days after I got the machinme that I started getting stopped walking down thw dock..." Heard you sew canavs...could you..." Long story short, still havn't done my own boat work...lol. Too busy with other peoples stuff...a real market ouit tjere. That being said... yeah..you HAVE too get a deposit. I as well, am 50% down, balance on delivery. I simply can't put thousands of dollars out of pocket into others work and depend on them to pay. Times have changed... people just cannot be depended on to pay on time. It's very sad.

For my business, I require a 50% deposit for all jobs over $1000.00 I find that jobs below this price are generally done with materials I already have on hand. I tell my customers the 50% deposit is required for special order materials and to secure a position on the calendar. I also let them know that the deposit it not refundable after materials have been ordered.

Speaking of getting paid, do you have much experience with doing insurance jobs? I've had this issue with getting work done from other automotive trades where my insurance says "we only pay the shop directly, we can't have you pay and then reimburse you", and then when I talk to the shop they're like "no, you have to pay us and get reimbursed, we don't deal with insurance companies" and some of my friends have had the same issue sometimes. For me as a customer it leaves me in a pickle because the only way to move forward is to either pay for the job myself and never get the insurance reimbursement, or go find another shop.
