Making a knife blade with CNC - Resolute MkIII

  • For more info on my hunting / camping / survival knives: store.goughcust...
    Over the last 9 months I've been working to try to move my process over to CNC! It's been an absolutely insane amount of work, and there's still much more to go, but the new process is finally beginning to become reality!
    In this video I show how I make the blades for the new Resolute MkIII knives. The process of making the blades is a fusion of CNC work and hand work, and is producing beautiful results! This process is fairly complicated and is still being improved to increase consistency and reduce scrap rates, but overall it's going quite well!
    These knives are primarily designed to be hard-working outdoors knives for hunting, camping, bushcraft and so on, and as such need to be made well to hold up to a lifetime of use!
    I'm happy with how things have turned out so far, but of course there's still much more work to do!
    The tooling used in this process is supplied by Maritool (maritool.com) and is all made in the USA. The vise I'm using is made by Orange Vise (orangevise.com) and is again 100% made in the USA. I think it's important to support local industry and I do so whenever possible!
    Hope you guys like the video! More coming soon!
    -Aaron Gough

    Amazing! You're inspiring a new generation.
    Just yesterday my kid asked me if he could make a knife and I said yes and showed him your old timelapse video where you file/grind the while thing. He was blown away it could be done with hand tools :)
    I told him he has to start that way then maybe when he's older I'll let him CNC on my machines.

    It must be fun to make the Machines do what you want and tinkering with them too perfect and make them turn out what you want them to. Each step is it's own perfection. And the game. How lucky. I bet you never saw it COMMING years ago. But I bet the machines are right up your alley as well as the knife making. ONE LOVE.

    Fantastic again. I can't begin to imagine how much time and effort was spent refining all the machining processes. I am also incredibly impressed with the amount of hand work that is involved after the machining process.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 років тому

      +whitechevtruck Thanks mate! It definitely took a simply huge amount of time... And that's ongoing as well as the process shown in this video is simply the first iteration, there are many more refinements still to come!
      There will always be quite a bit of hand work in the process! Unfortunately the machine cannot produce a finish that's good enough to simply coat over. The next version of the process I will be eliminating the belt grinding step in favor of better finish off the machine, and then some hand sanding to finish before coating. I think that will give me better overall consistency and lower chance of mistakes!

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 років тому

      +Geof Dumas Yeah man the air blast is awesome! Any reason you can't just run with air blade? Requires coated tools of course, but Maritool has good tooling inexpensively!

    • @GeofDumas
      @GeofDumas 8 років тому

      +Gough Custom partially from not having a good air compressor, but mostly because my handles are titanium. Coolant is a must, so it's not worth it to have both coolant options

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 років тому +1

      +Geof Dumas Ah gotcha! I haven't machined titanium yet, but I have heard it's difficult to work with!

    • @GeofDumas
      @GeofDumas 8 років тому

      Yeah it's much less forgiving than steels. It really needs a sharp cutting edge and the right speeds, but once you've got it dialed in, it's very nice to work with

    I spend my life grumbling about "knife things" on the internet, and nothing is good enough for me. But Aaron Gough nails it.
    Most people who are into knives spend many thousands of dollars buying different knives before they find that ONE knife they really trust.
    If I could go back in time I would have just bought one Resolute, or perhaps two.
    His knives aint cheap but they are damn sight cheaper than wasting thousands of dollars on crap.
    If I leave home tomorrow and need one knife that I can trust my life to, Ill take my Resolute MkIII.
    I could have saved myself a lot of money if I had learned that lesson earlier.

    For the bevel of the blade, i would use a fixture which is rotated/or rotates/ so that this operation is done using the flat part of the bit.

  • @Andrewlang90

    To get a process that adds a nice plunge line as well as a bevel, maybe try a bullnose end mill instead of the radius. You can do pass's at the blade to the spine at .1000 each cut, coming up .050 on you Z with each pass till you get to your desired thickness at the spine. Sorry, I machine for a living, and wording it seems harder then doing it lol. Keep it up, love the whole process

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 років тому

      +Andrew Lang Hey Andrew! That is actually what I'm doing! The endmill doing the bevel has a 0.060" corner radius, and the last cut shown on the blade is the one that cuts the plunge line! Works very well!

    Fantastic work!
    Perhaps one day I will have the money to get some of these machines, I have had the good fortune of living in the middle of nowhere which means lots of farriers to teach me to forge (hooray rural NZ) so I have been able to avoid most of the tedious hand filing that you had to do in your early videos. Smithing can be frustrating though so I found a bench grinder from the stone age (like when my dad was a kid) with bearings that are miraculously intact which I am hoping will constitute a belt grind one day. Seeing how far you've come has given me hope that I could reach a point somewhat close to what I see here.
    Thanks from Taupo, New Zealand.
