When you hear her singing as a solo, she is not even half of what she was singing as The Carpenters, so I thank Richard for having such a great ear and put all his trust in her. She was his creation.
Both happy and painful to watch this. Lovely to see such a healthy-looking Karen singing so beautifully here. Just wish she were still with us, and painful that she isn't. Can't help but wonder about the family dynamics that set Karen on the self-destructive path. According to the book, "Little Girl Blue....." their mother doted on Richard and practically ignored Karen. It has always bothered me watching the Carpenters, that there is so little interaction between Karen and Richard while performing. The obvious reference comparison is to Donny & Marie Osmond performing together. In the clips from their TV show, Donny and Marie have such affectionate playfulness between each other, making little teasing faces at each other, etc, and it is so obvious that Donny and Marie actually have a lot of fun working with each other. Although Karen and Richard give superb performances, the interaction between them is more distant and lacking in affection, in direct comparison to Donny and Marie. Don't want to point any fingers, but cannot help but wonder that if Richard had been more of a "big brother" like Donny was to Marie, if that may have boosted Karen's self image and self confidence enough to overcome the negative relationship of the mother to Karen.

Through her song delivery I feel the deepest recesses of whatever she must have felt throughout her life. In fact I believe she was the most gorgeous woman in the whole world, ever.
