Nglegong is a re-interpretation of classic pelegongan, the court music, with updated basic elements of classical compositions. The classical Legong music structure, such as gineman (introduction), pengawak (main body), and pengecet (main last section) are still preserved, but the melodic and rhythmic patterns are formatted in a new (neo-classical) style. The kekendangan (drum) patterns, melodic passages, kotekan (interlocking) rhythms, and compositional structure were deliberately made new and did not follow the jajar pageh (rules) of classical Pelegongan, resulting in a new jajar pageh adapted to the spirit of classical Pelegongan.
