The Switch's RPG library is absolutely nutty. It's crazy that so many of these are console exclusive, as well. I'd go as far to say that it's the first console since gaming went HD to have a library that can go toe to toe with PSone and PS2
It always amazes me how close the Xeno series has come throughout its lifespan to simply not existing. All the way back to Xenogears, these games have been fighting uphill just to survive, and now Xenoblade is an absolutely essential Nintendo property. Cannot wait to see what Takahashi comes up with next.

Harvestella is so underrated- I’m glad to see it get some love! It’s also the perfect game to play in handheld… in fact I’d say it’s better in handheld 😅
I was finally _just about_ to dive in head first on SMT V, they announce Vengeance… I’m thinking I should wait, but if anyone disagrees let me know! I’ve got enough on my backlog to wait; right now I’m trying to decide on Persona 4 vs. Like a Dragon vs. Star Ocean 2 HD… choice paralysis struck and I spent the night playing Mario Odyssey 😅
Definitely absolutely 100% wait for Vengeance. I personally have felt awful since they announced it because I bought the SMTV bundle with all the dlc last year for like $70, and hadn't gotten around to playing it. I had heard it was really good if you liked the SMTV games but then, after I finally bought it, everything I saw about it later was just saying how poorly it runs and how bland it feels due to the lack of story and environmental variety. Now Atlus is releasing their "fixed" version, like they always do with their games after several years, and I can either play a subpar version I got suckered into buying or I can pay another 60 or 70 dollars to finally play the "definitive" version of the game 😂 I'm not salty though 💀

Great list of games, and I have several in my backlog. Starting the Xenoblade Chronicles series this year was a pledge to myself. I probably would have gotten to these games sooner if I hadn't found out about that little ol' Trails series in 2021.
I’m heavy into xenoblade chronicles series I’m currently on 2 I played a bunch of Xenogears on my vita and that opened me up to xenoblade series and I’m loving it. Heavily recommend it and bed gaming is just mmmwaaa chefs kiss for a husband/parent it’s a godsend
You mentioned collection of mana was available on the PC but I don't think it is... I've been hoping it would come to steam, but I can't seem to find it. I ended up getting it on switch but I tend to prefer Steam when possible. The amount of times I've had to double buy is way too high... :( Love the videos just was hoping you were correct lol.
The main complaint I get about the Switch is that, being weaker than other consoles, the SW versions can sometimes run worse in order to accommodate for the hardware. And while that's totally fair... I'd say that if the SW versions run well, there is next to no reason to get any other version.

I don't have a Switch (my significant other does, but I've only ever played Mario's Picross on it), but the main complaint seems to be that it's not a powerful system, and... well, okay, but powerful hardware will NEVER compare to a solid library; just ask the SEGA Master System. The Switch seems like it'd be perfect for these kinds of RPGs, because they aren't nearly as demanding to run.
I hate the Switch for holding games I'd like to play hostage for years like SMT 5. I absolutely refuse to buy third parties on that shitty system, period, and I'm vindicated as SMT5 is finally coming to PC.

Switch and 3DS/DS are JRPG heaven. There are so many incredible titles...loved every single title. My favorite for 3DS is Dragon Quest VII and Switch is Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

It's a crazy machine, the fact that I watch half a dozen youtubers who are also super diverse just shows you the depth of the RPG game on the Switch. Best console ever for me.
Fun fact, I sold my copies of Grandia 1 and 2 on PS1/PS2 a loooong time ago and immediately regretted it. I ended up ordering them on eBay, only for the Switch versions to be announced three days later. 😅
Xenoblade 2 is hands down my favorite in the triliogy i'm one of the few that loved tha Gacha system (I thought the blades looked amazing and I loved how differen't artist did differen't blades)
While i understand why people didn't like the gacha system, i love it and i think it's one of the main reasons why XC2 is easily the most replayable in the series.

It’s just hard to pick a TOP 10 when there are so many wonderful games to choose from. Crisis Core would have made my list. I am also a fan of I Am Setsuna, Oninaki, Lost Sphere, Live A Live, Octopath Traveller (I and II), Trials of Mana (in Collection and the remake), Legend of Mana, Star Ocean First Departure and The Second Story R, the Romancing SaGa series, and Chrono Cross. Let us not forget all of the actual Final Fantasy games out there (Pixel Remasters, VII, VIII, IX, X/X-2, XII, XV Pocket Edition). And don’t you DARE forget all of the Dragon Quest games! 😉 Yes, I am a SquareEnix boy. Then, there are the Disgaea games and Rhapsody Marl Kingdom Chronicles, along with the other Prinny Presents games. Others would include Persona (3 Portable, 4 Golden, and 5 Royal), Super Robot Wars (series), Baten Kaitos I and II Remaster, .Hack HD Remaster. And of course Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars! Man I love Bravely Default 2, Adelle as a monk is one of the most beautiful designs for a character I can remember, all of her jobs looked great but something about how elegant she looks in the monk outfit is just perfect. Switch has been an absolute treasure trove of jrpgs. We have been blessed the last few years.
They also did Final Fantasy The 4 Heroes of Light on the DS, which is basically a prototype for the Bravely/Octopath series'. Team Asano never fails to amaze me... if you exclude their mobile games ofc.
I miss Persona 5, Octopath traveler 2, YS 8 & 9, Dragon Quest 11 and monster hunter stories 2. But I'm not sure what games thry would replace.. The switch has to many amazing JRPGS 😅
I miss when I loved the Switch as much as you do. Unfortunately, I'm just tired of all the performance issues (despite the heavy cutbacks made to even get games running that well), while still having to pay a premium for the games. I love what the Switch offered, I stopped playing portably. That being said, I'll be there day 1 for Switch 2! 😁
I really enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories 2 and Disgaea 7 on the switch (in addition to what you have and what a few others have mentioned (i.e. Tactics Ogre Reborn))

I like that you incuded Pokemon SV, the games were completely broken when they came out but if you play them now they´re a blast to play (aside from some framedrops here and there) also need to mention Monster Hunter Stories 2, I bought it expecting nothing and got a super solid game instead, definitely one of the most fun I´ve played so far on the Switch

My issue with the Switch is the input delay. It makes any game that relies on quick button presses just impossible, for me. It's great for turn based RPG's and cozy-genre games, though. I got all 3 Xenoblade games for only $50 from Gamestop a few months ago. Haven't had the chance to start them yet, but pretty excited for them.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses technically has 4 routes. 😉 Xenoblade hands down is the best Switch exclusive JRPG. SMT V and Bravely Default deserves to be on the list.
I wanted to love Triangle Strategy, however the character/party progression was very lacking and I am personally not a fan of the HD2D outside of Octopath. Bravely Default 2 though was excellent.
I am happy to say I have them almost all except mario rpg (got it on wii u but never played it) and the mana collection one. From the others I got, I uave only played like 2 games lmao Yes my backlog is THAT long 😂😂
I don't have a switch but I've been tempted to buy one just to play the Xenoblade Chronicles games, they look really great. Even though I haven't played them I stumbled upon the magical music this series has, I listen to tracks from some of the OST's and it has some of the best compositions out there, I'd even put them up there with some of the great Falcom titles like Ys, Trails and Tokyo Xanadu. Cool list though, the switch looks like a formidable system for RPGs.
Great work like always man. Thank you. Know what I’m hating about Atlus and their series though? 1st version releases and then complete version releases of their titles. It would be so much better if you could just sell everything through DLC and then when you want to sell a complete title just do it as buying the game with all dlc and updates. Look at P5 and P5R. That was the most ridiculous thing ever. I gotta buy the whole second release to play through the whole complete story? Trophies? + going through the whole grind all over again? Thank god I did not purchase SMTV. And I ain’t even know they were gonna pull the stunt off either. Def going for Vengeance now that I’m certain it will be a complete version though, but waiting on a sale due to its difficulty and grinding though. Want to play P3R so badly as well, but I know they will come out with a better more complete version in about a year or 2; so why bother?
I am so annoyed that I bought the bundle with all the dlc last year. And never even got around to playing it 😂 I was always hearing good things about it until after I bought it; then everything I read or heard was negative other than the fact that the underlying battle system was good. Practically non-existent story, very little environmental variety, poor performance. Now my dilemma is whether I should restrain myself and accept that I own a somewhat subpar version of a game that had a lot of potential (which I may never get around to a tally playing because of that), or do I shell out another 60 or 70 bucks in a few months and just consider the original purchase a very expensive lesson in the virtues of patience.
I love the Switch too! I hope the next console is a bit more powerful but doesn’t lose the appeal of Switch. Ironically, the Xenoblade series is initially why I bought a Switch too.
The switch is an excellent console for its exclusive game only I found that malti platforms game play the worst on the switch ex trial of mana I first downloaded the demo on the switch and I tried so hated the game it was just extremely not good
glad someone appreciating harvestella, it was a really good game tbh, the story is fantastic and every single place you visit is amazing, i also liked all the characters, the job system, and the simple yet addicting action rpg combat, the seasons changing, the farm and crafting just adds even more fun progression systems, and even after finishing it last year, i still remember this game and feel this sort of feeling that i need to go harvest my stuff
Yup, and it pains me to see just how objectively awful the series has become. It was my favourtie series for the longest time growing up, but the Switch era of Pokemon has been a dumpster fire and proves that they're made by lazy greedy people who don't care about quality what so ever cause they sell extremely well regardless.
Xenoblade 2 is a disappointment story wise. The combat has some depth which is never explained in the tutorial or anywhere else. The story is very tiring and frankly the goals of people are driven by very weak reasons. Also VAs and lip syncing are HORRIBLE!
I think Xenoblade 2 is supposed to be the “light-hearted” one in the series. 😊 The combat is insanely satisfying once I got the hang of it, much more interesting than the first. The hard mode challenges you to rethink all your initial strategies.
I actually play these games at work on my Nintendo Switch Lite. Just make sure everyone in the workplace knows that they have to knock before opening the door.

My 3 favorite 2d rpg platformer games on the switch that nobody talks about are Astalon: Tears of the Earth, Aggelos, and Goblin Sword. Astalon for me is one of my top 5 games on the switch. Amazing pixel art, level design and gameplay.

Thanks David for another wonderful video. I love all these games so much. Triangle Strategy was my game of the year when it came out. I have never played Final Fantasy Tactics before and I really hope it can get a remaster or a remake soon. I loved the Tactics Ogre remake.
I've only just gotten a switch, so very intrigued to see your suggestions for some JRPGs. Always such a great time checking out the content and getting the insight to someone's opinions and views on this wonderful topic. The fact that your passion and love for this genre shines through so bright is also a very good sign as you want to expose people to many amazing games. I do want to get my hands on the Grandia Remastered Collection. I remember playing the first one on PS1 when I was a kid, and want to see if the memories I have of the game hold up (also due to not remembering if I finished it, do that as well lol). Harvestella has caught my eye since I seen it first showed off. Super Mario RPG has got to be my favorite RPG on the SNES - even with the amount of them. Would love to see a sequel to this game. I loved the gotcha system. It makes perfect sense with the story. Obviously you may have to play the game twice to get all the unique blades.

I am also a fan of I Am Setsuna, Oninaki, Lost Sphere, Live A Live, Octopath Traveller (I and II), Trials of Mana (in Collection and the remake), Legend of Mana, Star Ocean First Departure and The Second Story R, the Romancing SaGa series, and Chrono Cross. Let us not forget all of the actual Final Fantasy games out there (Pixel Remasters, VII, VIII, IX, X/X-2, XII, XV Pocket Edition). And don’t you DARE forget all of the Dragon Quest games! 😉 Yes, I am a SquareEnix boy.
Then, there are the Disgaea games and Rhapsody Marl Kingdom Chronicles, along with the other Prinny Presents games. Others would include Persona (3 Portable, 4 Golden, and 5 Royal), Super Robot Wars (series), Baten Kaitos I and II Remaster, .Hack HD Remaster. And of course Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars!
Oooo, what about the Shadowrun games and Baldur’s Gate I and II? There’s even Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance I and II! Let’s not forget Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic I and II. Also, South Park The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole! Anno Mutationem, Astria Ascending, and Indivisible, Tunic, Guardian Tales, Tales of Symphonia and Vesperia, Blossom Tales I and II, Trigger Witch, Trinity Trigger, Bastion and Hades. Man I love Bravely Default 2, Adelle as a monk is one of the most beautiful designs for a character I can remember, all of her jobs looked great but something about how elegant she looks in the monk outfit is just perfect.
Switch has been an absolute treasure trove of jrpgs. We have been blessed the last few years.
Riiight? Adelle had SO many great outfits. Besides Monk, I also loved Red Mage and Phantom on her. Just dazzling. ⭐_⭐
I need a Bravely Default 3 now! Those games are very much FF3 and FF5 branching out from the mainline series and creating their own series of games.
They also did Final Fantasy The 4 Heroes of Light on the DS, which is basically a prototype for the Bravely/Octopath series'. Team Asano never fails to amaze me... if you exclude their mobile games ofc.
I miss Persona 5, Octopath traveler 2, YS 8 & 9, Dragon Quest 11 and monster hunter stories 2. But I'm not sure what games thry would replace.. The switch has to many amazing JRPGS 😅

Unfortunately, I'm just tired of all the performance issues (despite the heavy cutbacks made to even get games running that well), while still having to pay a premium for the games.
I love what the Switch offered, I stopped playing portably. That being said, I'll be there day 1 for Switch 2! 😁

I really enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories 2 and Disgaea 7 on the switch (in addition to what you have and what a few others have mentioned (i.e. Tactics Ogre Reborn))

I like that you incuded Pokemon SV, the games were completely broken when they came out but if you play them now they´re a blast to play (aside from some framedrops here and there)
also need to mention Monster Hunter Stories 2, I bought it expecting nothing and got a super solid game instead, definitely one of the most fun I´ve played so far on the Switch

The only thing is that I wish BD2 had a better story. But yeah, it was lots of fun.
My issue with the Switch is the input delay. It makes any game that relies on quick button presses just impossible, for me.
It's great for turn based RPG's and cozy-genre games, though. I got all 3 Xenoblade games for only $50 from Gamestop a few months ago. Haven't had the chance to start them yet, but pretty excited for them.

Xenoblade hands down is the best Switch exclusive JRPG. SMT V and Bravely Default deserves to be on the list.
I wanted to love Triangle Strategy, however the character/party progression was very lacking and I am personally not a fan of the HD2D outside of Octopath. Bravely Default 2 though was excellent.
I couldn't bring myself to play Pokemon Violet/Scarlet, these new-gen Pokemon just don't have an appeal to me. Rest of the list is great though.

I am happy to say I have them almost all except mario rpg (got it on wii u but never played it) and the mana collection one. From the others I got, I uave only played like 2 games lmao Yes my backlog is THAT long 😂😂
The Switch is my favorite console of all time thus far. I mostly play JRPGs and there are SO MANY great ones on Switch.
I don't have a switch but I've been tempted to buy one just to play the Xenoblade Chronicles games, they look really great.
Even though I haven't played them I stumbled upon the magical music this series has, I listen to tracks from some of the OST's and it has some of the best compositions out there, I'd even put them up there with some of the great Falcom titles like Ys, Trails and Tokyo Xanadu.
Cool list though, the switch looks like a formidable system for RPGs.
I still would like re-reviews and rankings for all consoles from NES to Now SNES and PS1 are JRPG juggernauts

Know what I’m hating about Atlus and their series though? 1st version releases and then complete version releases of their titles. It would be so much better if you could just sell everything through DLC and then when you want to sell a complete title just do it as buying the game with all dlc and updates. Look at P5 and P5R. That was the most ridiculous thing ever. I gotta buy the whole second release to play through the whole complete story? Trophies? + going through the whole grind all over again? Thank god I did not purchase SMTV. And I ain’t even know they were gonna pull the stunt off either. Def going for Vengeance now that I’m certain it will be a complete version though, but waiting on a sale due to its difficulty and grinding though. Want to play P3R so badly as well, but I know they will come out with a better more complete version in about a year or 2; so why bother?
I am so annoyed that I bought the bundle with all the dlc last year. And never even got around to playing it 😂
I was always hearing good things about it until after I bought it; then everything I read or heard was negative other than the fact that the underlying battle system was good. Practically non-existent story, very little environmental variety, poor performance.
Now my dilemma is whether I should restrain myself and accept that I own a somewhat subpar version of a game that had a lot of potential (which I may never get around to a tally playing because of that), or do I shell out another 60 or 70 bucks in a few months and just consider the original purchase a very expensive lesson in the virtues of patience.

I love the Switch too! I hope the next console is a bit more powerful but doesn’t lose the appeal of Switch. Ironically, the Xenoblade series is initially why I bought a Switch too.
Dragon quest 11 is far and away the best jrpg on the switch, followed by persona 5. I'd also throw in chained echoes in the top 5.

The switch is an excellent console for its exclusive game only I found that malti platforms game play the worst on the switch ex trial of mana I first downloaded the demo on the switch and I tried so hated the game it was just extremely not good
glad someone appreciating harvestella, it was a really good game tbh, the story is fantastic and every single place you visit is amazing, i also liked all the characters, the job system, and the simple yet addicting action rpg combat, the seasons changing, the farm and crafting just adds even more fun progression systems, and even after finishing it last year, i still remember this game and feel this sort of feeling that i need to go harvest my stuff

Yup, and it pains me to see just how objectively awful the series has become. It was my favourtie series for the longest time growing up, but the Switch era of Pokemon has been a dumpster fire and proves that they're made by lazy greedy people who don't care about quality what so ever cause they sell extremely well regardless.
Triangle Strategy is awesome. I loved the story, so the cut scenes wre top notch. I hope profits were good so we can get another

Xenoblade 2 is a disappointment story wise. The combat has some depth which is never explained in the tutorial or anywhere else. The story is very tiring and frankly the goals of people are driven by very weak reasons. Also VAs and lip syncing are HORRIBLE!
I think Xenoblade 2 is supposed to be the “light-hearted” one in the series. 😊
The combat is insanely satisfying once I got the hang of it, much more interesting than the first. The hard mode challenges you to rethink all your initial strategies.
I just need to make time to play Xenoblade series...🙂

My 3 favorite 2d rpg platformer games on the switch that nobody talks about are Astalon: Tears of the Earth, Aggelos, and Goblin Sword. Astalon for me is one of my top 5 games on the switch. Amazing pixel art, level design and gameplay.

Thanks David for another wonderful video. I love all these games so much. Triangle Strategy was my game of the year when it came out. I have never played Final Fantasy Tactics before and I really hope it can get a remaster or a remake soon. I loved the Tactics Ogre remake.

I've only just gotten a switch, so very intrigued to see your suggestions for some JRPGs. Always such a great time checking out the content and getting the insight to someone's opinions and views on this wonderful topic. The fact that your passion and love for this genre shines through so bright is also a very good sign as you want to expose people to many amazing games. I do want to get my hands on the Grandia Remastered Collection. I remember playing the first one on PS1 when I was a kid, and want to see if the memories I have of the game hold up (also due to not remembering if I finished it, do that as well lol). Harvestella has caught my eye since I seen it first showed off. Super Mario RPG has got to be my favorite RPG on the SNES - even with the amount of them. Would love to see a sequel to this game. There are just so many incredible JRPGS on the Switch, and you truly did justice on these 10. Thank you for all the effort and time you put into your content, and for the amazing suggestions.
