I started using social media when I was eight years old (I'm currently 21), and let me tell you, this is the greatest choice ever made. Nothing good comes from leaving children have unchecked access to the internet, specially in spaces where you interact with strangers of all types. I almost befriended a predator when I was nine. But even placing bad adults aside, social media is toxic. I would obsess over trends, I would constantly check notifications to be up to day, I quickly stopped playing silly flash games in favor of liking and sharing, and if I hadn't stopped when I was 13, I'd probably be deep in drama all day.

I stopped using social media at 18 and I was on it from about probably 12 till 18, I wish I never used it. My life is so much better now at the age 22 since removing it.. I’ve grown more and more every year.. actually focus on myself and my loved ones and want to be around people rather than look at people on social media. Life is just better without it. I still use UA-cam for news and some fun videos every now and then but it’s way different then seeing people from your own town and comparing yourself to them.

I’m a conservative and can’t stand the thought of government overreaching. But as a parent, I see first hand just how stupid these kids are, and it’s 100% the parents fault. Parents today would rather be their child’s friend, rather than a strict parent who has to teach their child important lessons like discipline, ethics, etc.
If parents are unwilling to do what’s necessary for their children, then it’s up to the law.

Did you have the internet for yourself before they turned 18, or did just they not have it? If you had it, why not at least let them use it on occasion, and have them use it more and more, with less parental oversight, as they get older - while also not letting them use it all the time? In this day and age, most students use the internet for projects and essays anyway, it would be a nightmare to not know how to use the internet until you turn 18 in todays world.

Except, parents aren't being parents much at all anymore. They are either way to busy to engage with their children or they are "buddies". What's worse really is that the parents are all over social media and are the worst abusers and setting poor examples . . . we need to get the adults away from it too. Social media is not a "right". Social media the way it was intended way back when was kinda nice but "we" have corrupted it and turned it into something harmful -- it's use/abuse destroys families sometimes and its on its way to destroying this country and maybe the world. It gives unintelligent, emotionally and morally bankrupt people a bull horn to a broader "audience". If you have something to say to someone, write a letter.
