Why do Tottenham fans have such a big problem with Daniel Levy & ENIC?

  • This video sees me undertake something of a deep-dive into the reasons whyTottenham Hotspur fans are now so vocally against Daniel Levy, ENIC and their ownership of their football club more than 20 years after they first gained control of the purse-strings in North London.
To outsiders, it may seem a tad curious but having had multiple conversations with Spurs fans in researching for this particular video, I think it's fair to say that their logic is ultimately sound and long-held in the vast majority of cases.
Hopefully you enjoy the video; it does, I think offer a decent flavour of the sort of content I'll be looking to produce for this channel moving forward.
Please do let me know your thoughts (both good and bad) in the comments below, I am hugely intrigued to see what you all think.
    Cheers, Dan (HLTCO)

Dan. What can I say... videos like this infuriate me. Especially the content. How do you have such ability to eloquently explain and air your football knowledge on UA-cam or Patreon but we have to listen such dismal dross on main stream media and radio. I hate terms that are used by pundits that lower the value of fans thoughts. The fans are far more assured and knowledgeable then ever. Keep it going mate.

I find it mad (in a good way) that fans from so many clubs are drawn to your channel. I’m an Everton, why am I following a Crystal Palace fan who discusses football on twitter and UA-cam. It’s because you take the time to understand each team and their fans. You don’t say anything controversial to wind people up to get clicks. You are honest and interesting. Well done Dan, keep it up. A really good analysis on what has happened at Spurs. Levy has got lucky with Poch doing it without investment and of course with Kane whom without we would have been nowhere the last 3-4 years. One small point, the history of a lack of investment goes back further, ask Martin Jol and ask Harry Redknapp. Both had opportunities to take us another level and got turned over by Levy. anyway, a great watch!

Great summary at the end - Levy and the board are ‘emotionally dead inside’. They don’t understand what fans, players and managers need. They don’t care, and they have prioritised profit over glory.

Bang on, our issue with the board has always been around the fact that they have spent the bare minimum, and spent it poorly. Instead of signing a Bastoni, we get a Lenglet on loan for example. So many players we nearly sign but never get over the line, the list is endless. And even when it was time to kick on and invest, we went backwards and did nothing. Baffling decisions, too much penny pinching and consistently lying to the fans about profits and investment. 1 league cup in 22 years for our club is unacceptable and we demand change #EnicOut #LevyOut

Levy and ENIC have sucked the life out of this club. Knocked down our heart and soul, White Hart Lane. They continue to push this narrative that fans are content with Top 4. Never buying reinforcements when the squad is in position to win trophies.

Thank you for making this video Dan to spread awareness from a football fan’s perspective and not the shit that the media try to hide when it comes to our dissatisfaction.
    My views on my club:
    - Constant transfer market failures
    - a stadium that looks good but is atmosphere deprived
    - trying to move Spurs to Stratford, not even anywhere near Tottenham, taking the club out of the community (“bUt We cArE aBoUt tHe CoMmUnItY”)
    - £1bn debt last year when Joe Lewis, the man with the money, has a net worth of billions
    - Tried to demolish parts of the road the stadium is on even when the new ground was built
    - no signings for 18 months, 2018-2019
    - most expensive tickets in Europe
    - Red sponsors
    - Changing the name of white hart lane
    - low ball offers for EVERY player
    - 9 month delay to build an NFL stadium
    - Sacked Pochettino and replaced him with two useless managers
    - Furloughing staff
    - £60 ticket for Villa at home at the end of 20/21 when the fans started coming back, 2-1 loss and the fans were forced to sit in the upper tier just so that the fans watching on TV could see the advertising things on the seats in the lower tier was an absolute disgrace
    - having Darude Sandstorm on as goal music in the absence of fans
    - Tried to join the ESL
    - total of £0 pumped into the club in the last couple of years compared to 500m from the likes of Chelsea despite Lewis’ wealth
    - Not to mention the toxicity around the board and it dips into the playing and coaching staff at times
    - And just yesterday the board in a battle with fans who have brought the iconic Spurs Cyprus flag to our home ground(s) for the last 20 years, some corporate cunt complained and they tried to take it down.
I get people are going to say “owners make mistakes” but the truth is, this isn’t even the start of it. If I had to put it simply:
Lack of investment in the playing squad + Levy and Co’s contentness with just top 4 every year = 1 trophy in 21 fucking years for a “big 6” club.
I get that for the first 10/15 years of their tenure we were on the up but their failures have been exposed so badly you wonder why they didn’t leave when they knew they had taken the club as far as they could. Absolutely unfit for a seemingly massive club like Tottenham.

So many issues over and above the investment in to the squad:
    1) Lack of vision and direction from the top. There needs to be continuity and cohesion across all facets of the club. Otherwise, as we're seeing, you end up with managers having drastically different philosophies and 50% of the playing staff needing to be churned out every time there's a managerial change.
    2) No coherent recruitment strategy. Despite investment there are always gaping holes in the squad. Failure to deliver key targets and rather than going for other top quality options there's always significant drop off in quality (Wijnaldun --> Sissoko, Mane --> Nkoudou, Bastoni --> Lenglet, Skriniar --> Rodon. The list is almost endless)
    3) No succession planning for our best players as they start to regress. Lloris has been on the decline for at least 3 years and we've only side back-up keepers. Same happened with Vertonghen and Alderwiereld. We've signed 1 top CB in 6 years!! And that's plain to see when watching us defend.
    4) They've panicked as a last chance saloon and hired 'win now managers. Decide to back said managers for one window or 50%-70% of the way. Leaving much of the same old dross to eventually let down the manager. Just look at the demeanour of Poch Mourinho and Conte towards the end of their tenure.
    5) Ultimately, put Emerson, Doherty, Dier, Sanchez, Davies, Tanganga, Lloris & Sessegnon on the transfer list and see the calibre of the teams wanting to buy them, if any.
Amateur hour right from the very top.

This will be a norm. We pay the highest ticket price in the league to watch our team play for 7 to 10 position in the league. We made huge progress under Enic and now we're regressing gradually. Thank you for the concise presentation. Spot on as to why I am Levy and Enic out. You alluded that the pattern of behavior by Levy and Enic of refusing to fully back the manager, especially just before the team breaking through to being a championship winner. I would like to hear you discuss in greater detail on the player personnel decisions made by Levy and the board going back further to the Redknapp days. Strickly speaking, if their primary motive is profit, I wonder if the football team becoming a title winner is something Levy and Enic would even be considered a positive towards the goal of making most money. That is, would the possible advertisement monies a title winner might bring into their organization offset the player related costs Levy and Enic might incur thereafter to continue meeting the higher expectations?

Hit the nail on the head here mate. Hard to doubt how much ENIC have grown the profile and infrastructure of the club to the point where we can hire managers like Mourinho and Conte, but we really struck gold with Poch. His style of play, his emphasis on youth and coaching players available to him and even his relationship with Levy (which is apparently still strong today).
Not backing him from 2015-2017 after we pushed in the league really restricted how far we were ever going to go under him unfortunately. It’s clear that we can’t currently compete with the resources and heritage of the other ‘Big 6’ teams.
With everything going on with Conte, supposed interest in the club from Qatar and even the recent issues our sporting director Paratici is facing, really feels like we are at a fork in the road.
What may be a more sensible approach is to develop a project similar to the likes of Brighton, where a longer term analytics approach is taken, and a clear structure is in place back office. A decision can then be made on hiring a more progressive manager, who like the players is not the finished article themselves, but can be given the time and resources to really develop and create a team with a modern identity that the fans can get behind.

I'm a Spurs fan and I think you covered most of the points and done it well. One example of a failed transfer through Levy trying to be too cute was when we tried to sign Grealish a few years ago. We had reasonable bid accepted and rather than negotiate the contract with the player/agent Levy decided to change it and lowered it to a rather insulting bid that included a fringe player of ours. Very soon after this 2nd bid was made Villa were in the process of a takeover and the new incoming owners decided they did not need to sell. Now look at the player Jack has become. Just one of the many deals our 'clever' negotiating, business brilliant chairman has fudged up.

Fantastic video man. You simply just get it. Not even heard any spurs fans put it as correctly as you did. I can’t stand the enic out crowd on twitter even though most fans do want them out but they can’t eloquently explain their reasons and it becomes a shouting match even the protests are abysmal and childish efforts. In reality best we can hope for as a fan base is to ask for more communication from the club, going back to a clear philosophy whether that’s playing style, recruitment and culture of what it means to be a spurs player\ manager and finally compromises on ticket prices in good faith for the disappointments since the stadium opened. I really think for most reasonable spurs fans it’s not about having success but every fan regardless of who they support want to feel atleast connected and part of the family rather than a number and that’s how being a spurs fan feels these days

A big pet peeve of mine is when fans of other clubs criticise fans for having a go at their owners. "Look how much money the Glazers have spent" "look at the success liverpool have had since FSG came in". I followed your twitter account because you give a balanced view and your youtube videos are no different.

As a Spurs fan, I think this was genuinely an incredibly accurate depiction of the situation at the club and how the fans feel and all from a very neutral perspective. I’m personally on the fence about my feelings towards Enic and Levy, I think the place that they’ve got us to is incredible and deserves enormous gratitude and praise, but they probably taken us as far as they can, they simply don’t have the financial power or will to take us to the elite level.
Either way, this was a fantastic video and I’m really looking forward to you making more of this deep dive type content, or just any in general, keep it up 👍

ENIC and LEvy do not deserve praise for anything and any fan who thinks otherwise is a fool. Levy and ENIC(Lewis) were never about football or the club, they just came to make money, which they squeeze out of the club and all the expenses go to the club!!!! Don't tell me they built the stadium and training center just so they could see more on tickets than they could before. If the Levys were ever interested in a football club and not themselves, some money would have been invested a long time ago. The worst thing is that this complete amateur some fans treat you like stupid puppets, he always lets his anger turn against a manager he never supports enough (Pochetino, Mourinho, etc...) His amateur skills cost us Trossard now, Diaz recently and also we could have had B. Fernandez, Dias R. - City and Mane instead of Sissoko) that's his level of quality. Soon we will be out of all competitions and we will be max. 7. Conte will leave Kane too and we will return to the fight for the middle of the table. This is Levy and ENIC

@@lukaszajicek6359 I’m not defending what he’s done or how he’s invested the last few years, nor am I denying the fact that they’re very evidently doing this for their own benefit. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that they’ve taken us from being a club worth £200 million to a club worth £2Bn+, from a club who dreamed of getting champions league football, to a club that expects it and needs it. The fact that our mentality has changed to us wanting to reach the very top level is testament to what they’ve done, however, they can’t take us any further and the lack of investment in recent years is embarrassing- but that doesn’t take away from how far they’ve taken us.

I wonder just how much the embryonic pencil drawn Super League figured in the mind of ENIC when the commercial plan of the new stadium was assessed.
I believe that ENIC never intended to chase Silverware of itself . It is Silverware that drives them . Is is the low opportunity cost of oversubscribed seats in a large venue Entertainment centre in the capital city.

I loved the paralell with Coca Cola, I'd never really looked at it that way before. Football/Sport just has the investment emotionally that you just don't find elsewhere, and I'd argue that football is beyond other sports in that aspect.

    Recruitment is shamefully poor.

Spurs fans love shouting ENIC OUT all over social media and the Internet but can't be bothered to go to the last protest in the summer or are too scared to sing we want Levy out in the stadium. The fanbase has turned just like Arsenal's, the same Arsenal we use to take the piss out of for being middle class carrot baton eating drips that sit in silence during a game.
The old school yids have been outpriced or just had enough where they feel disconnected from the club. Now the stadium is filled with a weird Disney On Ice type crowd that only sing ( the same old 4 songs) if they are winning a game.
Only way we will get our Tottenham back is if the club is fighting relegation or actually do get relegated. Cos ENIC ain't selling up no time soon with the money they making with this airport departure lounge looking stadium!

Your "baffled" with the point of view of spurs fans about the owners...
I am not a spurs fan, so this is from outside opinion.
You go on about the stadium and other things they have built, with the money that the fans help produce, and somehow fans should be great full for that, it's like saying the people should be grateful when the government uses peoples money to build a road.
The point of football is to win, win trophies, and sadly your owners do not care enough about trophies, it's that simple.
Levy and the owners have became/made billions off spurs fans backs

    • @hodlcrypto6026

Also I heard someone say that spurs team doesn't even own the stadium, that levy and inic own it and if someone buys spurs they will have to pay rent.... so they built a stadium, off spurs fans back, for them selves, and not for the team?
