  • How to quickly get back in an inflatable kayak if you fall out. This is a great skill to have when whitewater rafting on the Rogue River or Salmon River. Learn more at www.orangetorpedo.com/salmon-r...

Looking at this in context, with newbies in a group of probably other newbies, “let go of the paddle” is good advice. If those newbies decide to continue paddling outside of commercial, guided trips, they will quickly be told the opposite… ALWAYS try to keep hold of your paddle. Practice swimming and re-entering with it in a controlled environment until you can do it in combat.
My way of looking at it is that this is equivalent to a hard boater’s roll and should be practiced and mastered the same before progressing into higher class runs.

@tayl0rw3st I totally see your point, and on a personal level, I completely agree. I never let go of my paddle. However, this was for our customers and I have watched plenty of customers not be able to climb back in their boat because they are holding their paddle. For us, it's get out of the water ASAP. Another paddler or a guide will grab your paddle. That is why we instruct that way. On a personal trip, or all guide trip on something difficult, I totally agree.

Never 'let go' of your paddle! Instruct a re-entry with paddle in hand and if student is unable to do this, then there are other options like use a paddle park on the boat itself or a paddle leash. Paddlers should also carry a backup split paddle secured on the kayak.

Sea kayaking you are absolutely correct. However, in the river format, and on a guided trip with support, getting back in the boat is the primary goal and holding the paddle in rapids can slow that down which is why we say drop the paddle if you need to.

This is obviously a lesson in river paddling, where the rule would be to NEVER leash your paddle where it could get tangled up in rocks or other obstacles and cause entrapment dangers for the swimmer and/or other paddlers.

I find it interesting you say to let go of the paddle, most people say to hold on to it if possible. Why do you recommend the opposite?

      Gregory,
We suggest for a couple reasons.
1st, for new paddlers holding the paddle often makes it harder to get in the boat. So instead of getting out of the river and into the kayak, which is the safer place to be, time is spent trying to climb over the paddle. 2nd, in our context, we have guides paddling along in inflatable kayaks who will grab the paddles and return them. However, even without that, being back in the boat is better than not being in the boat.

Never let go of your paddle! In that current, or even lighter current, it will be gone in a second, and you will have no way to retrieve it. Always use a paddle leash.

Rule number one DONT let go of your paddle! TRY to never let go of your paddle (unless it is violently ripped from your hands by the current), get to your IK, flip it over and hop in. Then focus on what is ahead of you and use your paddle that you didn't lose to move you in the right direction. If you let go of your paddle in the middle of a rapid and it gets taken down the river then good luck making it down the rest of your trip. Thanks for sharing but I disagree with you.
