Hi Gina I can relate to this topic as I have been riding off and on for 40 years. Ten years ago after many years of not riding I bought and then shortly sold my sixth bike. Not long after that my mom said she was glad that I did not have a bike anymore. She told me she always worried about me when I had all my bikes but did not want to tell me that in fear that I would give up riding because of her. Seven years went by and the urge hit me once again but this time I didn't tell her, so it's still my secret but sometimes I thinkI might just spill the beans .My situation is different from you but not in some ways .

"nobody wants to see a 50 year old woman riding a motorcycle"... Ummm I do. Not because you're 50 years old, and not because you're a woman, but because I ride motorcycles, and I know just how idiotic that grin you get is when you've been on the bike for five minutes. Everybody should get to experience that grin in their life, that sense of freedom. It's something rather special.

I totally get what you’re talking about at the 7:27 point. For me, just taking the first step was the hardest. The only person I told I was buying my first motorcycle, a brand new 2012 Victory Kingpin, was the salesperson at the shop in central MD where I was stationed. I was 32 at the time and the purchase was a much-needed turning point in my life. I didn’t plan anything about it; it was a pure impulse buy and one of the best decisions I ever made for myself. Close to 10 years later, I just got re-assigned to a European location and bought my fourth motorcycle yesterday, a stalwart 1992 BMW K75, with the intention of cruising as many EU countries as I can before they send me back to CONUS. Keep up the good work and ride safe!

Being a motorcycle rider is something to be proud of. Starting this at 50 just shows you are now embracing your next stage in life rather than many who start to close in their sphere and avoid things new and challenging. Your true friends should be accepting if not supportive. You took a bold step, and you already know the reward. It just gets better with experience, and you will find many friends you haven't met along the way. You have many years of riding ahead of you. If you decide to move forward on the relationship front, try to find someone who rides. Couples who love riding have a great bond to share, and avoid the conflict of not sharing the same interest at vacation or retirement time.
As far as telling your mother goes, I personally feel that hiding who you are to a family member is a slippery slope toward trouble. People who worry about something they can't control are wasting emotional energy. Offer to take her for a ride. She might surprise you.
Florida- such a shame, all that sunshine and no curves or hills. Still, you get to feel the wind and the machine. Your next step can be to travel into the mountains when you feel comfortable to take trips. Best of luck as you learn.

Growing up in my home, motorcycle were verboten. I learned to ride on a friend's dirt bike in the sand pits at 15. My mother never knew. At 26 I bought my first street bike. Passed the test a month later and went to see my mother and little brother. She was not happy. Last year I helped my son get his motorcycle endorsement. That weekend I told my family at a gathering. Again, my mom was very unhappy. It's like taking off a bandaid. It has to be done. It's probably going to hurt a little. But the anticipation of it hurts 1000x worse. Just do it quickly and honestly. Don't drag it out.

I fully get it. I started riding at 58. My father was, years before a motorcycle cop so he was okay with it. My mom, just told me, always, "be careful". One is blessed to be well into his sixties before losing his parents (both were WWII vets, btw) and I often am amazed at their courage in each other and their faith and support in their two sons. One thing they taught, its a good thing to be pushed beyond your comfort zone. Security stunts growth.

Good morning Gina!! I actually tried to write this last night, and POOF!! it disappeared... lol. I was tired so I hit the sack, and decided to try again this morning. I totally understand your situation of not telling your mom! My folks are 91 & 92 still living in WV. Mom still worries about me (I'm almost 68), it's kind of funny really, lol! So yeah, there are a lot of things that I don't tell them just because I don't want her to worry! They know I have a bike, but no idea how much I ride!! Here's one thing I haven't told them yet... I'm going up to Alaska in May for a couple of weeks to start clearing off some property up there, and I plan on making my big move in August!! Every time I go up there I get this: it's dark all the time, or light all the time or it's -60 all the time... all of which are wrong!!! My property is on the Kenai Peninsula, about 150 miles south of Anchorage. On the shortest day of the year, they had 5.75 hours of daylight. Their winters up there are very similar to their winters in northern WV. But you can't change the pre-conceived notions of some people! They don't have internet, never have and never will! I'd given them a couple of my old computers over the decades, but they just give them away. Remember back in the old dial-up days and AOL??? Well one time I was back there visiting and dad wouldn't let me connect my laptop to his phone line because he was afraid it would destroy his phone system!! LOL!!! So no, they don't know I have a UA-cam channel, they don't even know what UA-cam is... LOL!!! Ride Safe Gina!!

Are you a grown woman living your own life? Are you married?
You have a life of your own now and there is no reason you have to answer to your mother or get her approval.
I realize that may sound a bit rough, but I have learned a very long time ago that if I am going to look for my mothers approval in what I do with my life, life is going to suck.

(Sorry, this is a long one.)
I got my license last year, about 2 months into the pandemic before I turned 28. I signed up for the MSF course and told my parents about it 3 days before the course. They were not happy. "You're going to get killed. There's too many people on their phones." Anything and everything they could say, they did say. My mom was almost in tears. Ultimately, they knew that they couldn't stop me as I may be their son, but I'm also an adult. As the course went on, I told them about what I've been learning and how I've been doing on the course bike and they slowly started to understand that maybe I could do it. (I'm a very skinny guy at around 5'10'' and 115 lbs so I think one of their major concerns was me actually being able to handle 500 lbs between my chicken legs.)
I passed the course, got my endorsement, and immediately started looking for a bike. I knew the turning point was when my mom was actually sharing some seller pages from FB Marketplace and Craigslist, as well as asking some of her old patrons from her bartending days for bike suggestions. Settled on a 2017 Honda Rebel 500 from a dealership, booked the Uhaul trailer to pick it up, and started up my 'brand new' bike right outside their house. My dad immediately runs out, sits in the saddle, and the next thing I knew he was around the block! (He used to ride dirty on his new Sportster back in '06.)
After I get back from dropping off the trailer, my mom comes over to me and tells me all about how my dad said he was proud of me; how I took the proper steps, got some good gear, signed up for the course, got my license, found a good bike, and got it home safely. While it may not have come directly from my dad's mouth, it's a moment that I'll never forget. Now I'm trying to convince him to get that Spyder that he's been talking about ;)

I've got my motorcycle license last year, at 30 years old. I wanted to do it for a long time and then the pandemic happened and had to wait, but I finally did it. I told my parents because somehow they are a big part of my decision-making, in the sense that they have the right to know. They are no strangers to the motorcycle world and while my dad was troubled by the idea but supported me, my mom was totally against it, but respected that it was my call. So what I did was to tell them, specially her, every little (big) thing that I was learning in school and step by step she was more supportive. Mind you, she was still worried, but she was more open minded. One weekend I took her with me and she met my instructors and saw me riding. At the end of the lesson when we were walking home, she told me that she saw my passion with different eyes and saw how happy I was on that rebel 500 and she loved it. One of the instructors told her that I was made for this and she told me that she felt proud at hearing that and seeing how happy I was riding. It's her job to worry as a mother, she will always worry, but she also trusts me and that is huge. Today she tells me every time she sees a motorcyclist and what gears he/she was wearing, whether she like his/her bike or not and things like that and it's kinda fun. Thing is, our moms will always worry, because it's in their nature, especially when it comes to their daughters. :) Keep riding!

With me it was just the opposite, my mother had known about my desire to reenter the world of motorcycling for many years , she would never have agreed with it prior to me turning into an older man but as I was approaching age 58 she figured that pushing 60 I was old enough to responsibly handle it, I mean one should be able to do at least some of the things that they have always wanted to do by that age, so my mother had gotten me a motorcycle for my 58th birthday a few years before her death , I mean I shall always be grateful to her for doing that for me because without her I would never had been able to experience this once again.

Finally when she asked, again, WHY, I said because you never know when you might get eye cancer & then you can't. She then at least understood. Sometimes she even asks about the bike. Hey Gina, it's so cool that you ride! I know it can be hard to tell parents about street motorcycles. See as a teenager I had a few trail bikes that my parent signed and even paid for. My mom is the baby of 7 and had 6 brothers and 4 of them rode motorcycles 1 of them was an actual racer, she tagged along with them often until one of them got killed on a motorcycle. So when a got old enough to buy my hone I intent about it and my mom went crazy, final word was if I was getting a bike, make it with a luggage rack cause I would be out of a roof over my head. Next day I got home with a brand new 900 Z1 Kawasaki without a rack, not a word was ever spoken and I had 12 other motorcycles trough the years and race 2 of them. It's a disease and it's in your blood you just cant resist. Now in my 60s I still would ride but a broken back and neck 17 years ago put a stop to it, now its sports cars.

Bought my first Harley in June 2020 but due to COVID, a broken ankle and Hurricane Laura and Delta devastation, I just got my endorsement a couple of weeks ago. About a month ago my husband bought me a Harley Street 500 to keep at home (we live in a camper while our house is being rebuilt and I have no place to keep my Heritage Classic out of the elements so it’s being stored about 2 hours away) and I absolutely LOVE that smaller bike. Hopefully by the time we get everything rebuilt and move back into our house, I’ll be ready to move on up to my Heritage. I just now told my Daddy a few weeks ago. I felt like I did when I was a kid and had to tell him I made a bad grade😏 He took the news very well tho. The kicker to it all, I’m a 56 year old ER nurse and still Daddy’s Girl😍

ahh mothers, everywhere, in every culture, in every age bracket, worry.
I got get on a motorcycle at 37 even though i had expressed the love for them since I was a teen, simply because I wanted to avoid the "but it's dangerous" talk.
I only managed to get through my mom's worry (she still does worry but at least she knows there is no other way) when I had to commute to work on the daily changing 3 different transportation and I was at my bodily limit, so my reasoning was "I'll either have to drive a motorcycle or stop working and do nothing with my life" which is something that neither of us wanted for me.
I did give her quite the scare with the crash, but after telling her how much worse things would have been if I wasn't wearing gear and that it was gear that saved me, she now trusts me and the gear, especially since I'm a very responsible careful rider, I don't do crazy things, and I don't speed up.

Hello Gina and welcome to motorcycling. I absolutely love when young folks, women and otherwise anyone gets into the sport/hobby. It's an absolutely outstanding thing to engage in. I feel you on this one. first time I fell in love with motorcycles I was maybe 10. My parents were in the "Oh HELL NO!!" camp. So, long story short, I learned a lot about mechanics and built a hunk of junk minibike from old parts and a borrowed cement mixer engine. Well, when the police busted me for ripping up and down my street, completely illegal, my patents told the cops to keep my home made bike. fast forward 40 years, 4 years ago, I too was 50 and decided I wanted to ride. For me this was particularly questionable as I have a vision imparement. My entire family feels I should not be on a bike. Only my brother in law rides and he started just a year or so before me. So, I made a deal with everyone. I took the MSF. If the instructors told me that I wouldn't be a good candidate, I would give up the dream. Problem is, the opposite hapened. I was killing it on the MSF course. Instructors couldn't believe I had a vision impairement and that I hadn't been riding for years. So it took a lot of days for the wife to be OK with it. Didn't tell my 80 year old father for months. When I did, he took it well, but still is of the belief that everyone on a motorcycle crashes and has a horrible accident. Actually, my entire family believes motorcycle = accident. When I got my second bike, Harley Street Glide, they thought I'd lost it as this is a big heavy cruiser. Well, I'm still having a blast, kind of.... right now the wether here in Jersey sucks, snow, ice cold, dismal skies, but when spring hits, I'm back on 2 wheels.
Best of luck and ride safe.
    Bob

Hi, I enjoyed your story as it's similar to mine. I started a motorcycle driving course on my 50th birthday, two months later I had my first bike. I never told my mom cause she would have worried so much. Way back in 1978, my mother and I arrived at the scene of an accident to find it was my brother on his bike. He survived with bad road rash. Mom was so upset, hence why I never told her. Three years ago, it was my turn. I spent some time in the hospital with a severe broken leg from a motorcycle accident. I never told her that either. My mom passed a year ago at the age of 95 and I still ride today. Cheers!

  • @ShadowBoxer
    @ShadowBoxer 3 роки тому

Hi. Sounds like we have a few traits in common.
    1. I also started "late". I had just turned 48 and I had the same thought of, "If not now, when? How long do I wait? When I'm 80 or 90?" It still took a year after I took the MSF course (I took that first just to learn more about riding and see if I was going to be okay with the basics), before I found my motorcycle. So far it's the only one I've had.
    2. I also did not tell my mother when I bought a motorcycle.
Resolution: I told her after I bought it, endured a 45 minute interrogation and she got over it and now does not seem to mind when I visit and am riding the bike. Getting forgiveness was a lot easier than getting permission.
Afterthoughts: However willful ignorance is not the same as acceptance. I bet she has no idea what brand it even is. She's never really asked or talked about it at all. I started riding in 2013. "I don't want to hear about it. I don't want to know about it." is not the same as accepting and respecting your choices as valid. Then again if we are going to be grownups, at 50-plus, we should be grown up enough to make up our own minds. You don't need anyone's validation.
    3. I also have not shared my UA-cam channel with family.
Resolution: I figured in order to shield my mother or others who might make more work for me, I have not told them about my channel. In order to shield my family (cousins for example) who might think it's cool, from having to lie for me I would not tell them about my channel either.
Afterthoughts: However this means that I have almost no one to share my victories and defeats, my worst day ever; almost being killed (video 0036: Dodgeball with Death ua-cam.com/video/5G8gii1ssks/v-deo.html )
and my best day ever; I was not killed and I attribute it mostly to riding technique and practice (video 0035: Mind the Gap ua-cam.com/video/de8ANxeCOXc/v-deo.html ).
So no one to share a beer and a laugh with and no one to offer a shoulder to cry on.
That lead to me not telling a cousin who came from Colombia and was coming over to my mom's house for Thanksgiving (or something like that). She had a young son and I was thinking that my cousin would not approve and I might be a bad influence on the son (my 2nd cousin).
Well two or three years later they noticed my helmet and jacket in my original room (in my mom's house, again we are over for the holidays) and when they realized that the old BMW outside was my bike they had questions. My cousin says she had a motorcycle in Colombia. I had no idea. So the moral is when you limit yourself with your "concerns" (FEARS) you also limit everyone else since they are not given the chance to support you. You are also prejudging them. And most of the time what makes things like this a big deal is your fears projected as someone else's hang-ups or judgments. I have found that most others really, honestly could not care less and probably don't even notice what you're worried about until you point it out to them with self doubt and excuses. They have their own problems to worry about.
That's been my experience so far. I hope that helps someone.
Hmm, maybe I should make this a motovlog? : )
    Stay Sharp & Stay Up
    Cheers

This is too funny... I did the exact same thing and did not tell my mother that I was getting my motorcycle license as well as purchasing one. I was 50yrs old too when I secretly told my husband and daughter that I was going to work on a Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.... when in reality I was taking the course to get my motorcycle license . I had gone to the Drive Test centre a couple of weeks earlier to write my test on the way to work.. LOL! Once I got it I was so excited but did not tell them at all. I didn't want anyone trying to convince me not to do it. I just woke up one day and dedcided that was the goal I set for myself. Not really sure why I chose that as I had never ridden a bike before. I had a close friend that helped me find a used motorcycle and he found me a 2015 CB 500FA. My family or my mother did not know and I did not tell. My friend took the bike and had it inspected for me and kept it in his garage for a bit. Once my husband and my daughter went on a weeks vacation I got the bike home and practiced for hours in the school parking lot etc... The only person I told was my older brother who I swore him to secrecy. On the first day that my husband and daughter got home from vacation they opened the garage up and my daughter looked at my husband and said, "there is a motorcycle in the garage". When he looked at me he asked "whose motorcycle". I said "mine". He said "yours, but you don't ride a motorcycle'. I said "yes I do". He said " but you don't have a license". I said "yes I do" and that was that. They have been very supportive ever since but are worry warts when I ride. My mother passed less than a year later and I never told her about the motorcycle as she would have worried if she knew. Or so I thought.. I later found out from my brother after her funeral that she did know and he told her. He mentioned that she was very proud of me and teased my brother about it because he tried to ride but couldn't get the hang of the balance aspect of it. Anyway, I am going into my 4 season of riding at 53yrs old and I love moto camping. Sorry for the rant but I wish you all the best with your Moto adventures. I have subscribed and I look forward to watching! Take care, from Ontario, Canada - Angela

Love, love this, Angela! Just wow. Until I posted this video, and people started commenting, I had no idea how common it was to hide things from our parents even when we are far from “children” And your story is amazing. There are so many strong, capable women out there choosing to do things for themselves that make them feel happy and fulfilled. You’re a great example of that. Massive thumbs up to you. I truly appreciate you sharing your story. It’s a good one and something to be proud of. All the best to you up there in the frozen north. ❤️

Hey. I know the feeling exactly. At 55 I decided to learn to ride two wheel, I was previously riding 3 wheels. Made the official decision around new years eve. I sold my 3 wheeler and, 2 weeks ago, I bought a 2021 Indian Challenger without telling anyone in my family. They all read about it after I posted pictures on FB. BTW, I am a widower of almost 2 years. Lots of friends and neighbors think I went crazy. My late wife would have never allowed me to buy a 2 wheel motorcycle. I have 3 kids and one is still I high school. So, yes it was a tough decision given that I am still responsible for a teenager. It is really something I always wanted to do. But then life gets in the way and you have to postpone until perhaps you find the right moment. I just wanted to learn on the motorcycle I plan to ride for really long time; and I plan to ride to Sturgis this year so I have a lot of riding to do before that. I did take some precautions and added forward and rear crash bars and Drop Guards. Like you said in one of your videos, if not now, when? I'm will be almost 60 when my son leaves for college. I had to do it now that God is still blessing me and keeping me able and strong and I can learn fast and I don't have much fear of leaning and not too afraid of dropping an 800 pound ($30000) motorcycle while learning. So far so good. I'm enjoying my big motorcycle that everyone I know told me not to buy because it was too big. I practice every day slow maneuvers at a close by Church parking. I get better every day, and am already comfortable enough to ride on the street. Anyway, congratulations on turning 50 and joining the club and on making this great decision and setting an example for so many people our age that are probably thinking like us and haven't been able to take the plunge yet. It is all ok, and an easy thing to do, right? After we all successfully pass all the tests and shit that life throws at us...We all deserve to be a little bit selfish and Enjoy Life a little!! Good Luck!

Years ago I told my dad I wanted a motorcycle, he didnt like it at all, but my mom was ok with it. I have rode 5 different bikes, so far I haven't got into an accident yet and hopefully I can keep that up.

Totally understandable, I have the exact same mother. I’m 48 years old and I still don’t tell her about any of my motorcycle experiences with the exception of an accident that I had when I was 19 years old

Thanks Gina, Really like the Talks and The scenery. Donkeys too. Lol. Nice to see ya Happy. I myself tried to live my life like what others thought it should be. And cared what they said. 58 now and for the last 10+ years been living my life. Took me 3 marriages to figure that out. Keep up the good work. 👍🏼As always, ride safe be safe.

I am just about to start my riding career at 43. I was hoping that I would be well on my way now but the recent issues in the world has meant a delay to my tests as they kept getting cancelled due to lockdowns here in the UK. Just wanted to say I stumbled across your channel and am now a subscriber, like you I am looking forward to your journey on two wheels. ;) Great videos by the way.

Then realized I'm also close to 50 now n still riding.

Thank you, Craig! I watched quite a few “training videos” with tips about UA-cam, including thumbnails and video titles and such. Lots a time spent researching and trying to do it mostly right from the beginning.

"No one wants to watch a 50-year-old on a motorcycle" Currently 439 subscribers disagree. That is a huge amount for such a short time. You are almost half way to where my first channel is after something like 10 years.
As for moms? Mine is no longer around, but my grandmother is, and I take care of her in my home. I am a 43-year-old man and I am not going to openly drink a beer in my own home because of the disapproval my 93-year-old grandmother has for drinking. Call it respect, call it fear, but it is what it is.

You’re a good guy to be caring for your grandmother. I hope you find your own escape when that gets difficult. And the increase in subscribers in the last two weeks has been completely unexpected and humbling. Thanks for checking out so many of my videos. I appreciate it.

I have both a 2 wheel and a trike. I ride 2 wheels for me and I take my 86y/o mother on the trike. We went on a week long round trip ride from Waco TX to Las Vegas and back. We're planning a trip to Traverse City, MI. She has so much fun.

Gina you are absolutely right in your comment on buying and using the right bike that suits you and your own personal needs. The important thing is getting out there and riding. If in future you wish to upgrade, downgrade or move sideways in terms of which bike you own and ride is purely your choice and you shouldn’t let anyone influence your choice. Suggestions can be healthy and helpful but ride whatever you are comfortable with. I personally know people with awesome bikes but hardly use them, What’s the point in that. Keep riding, keep having fun and do as you please. That’s what freedom is all about X

I couldn’t agree more, Keith. It’s tempting to just float from bike to bike, but as much as I’d like to “move up” at some point, I’m not there yet. And when I do it will be a well thought out decision and not one I make due to external pressure. Advice and suggestions are always welcome and will be parsed and assimilated for use when the time comes. 😊

Are you sure we don't have the same mom? LOL I just came here to say, after finding (and subscribing!) to your channel a few days ago - I've never related to something quite like I do to your content! I am turning 48 in October. I just bought a Virago 250 as my "learning" bike with absolutely zero riding experience. I'm equal parts excited and petrified. Your videos calm my nerves, make me laugh and inspire me. Thank you thank you thank you!

@@GingerDashMoto I am absolutely loving it! My husband had some riding experience (30+ years ago), and I know a small part of him was apprehensive when I announced my intention to learn and buy a bike. 2 days later he took it for a ride, loved it so much he picked up one for himself! We've gone on some really nice rides together and I have made so much progress in a short time.. I take my MSF course in a couple weeks and hopefully will be 100% endorsed by end of the month. 😊 Happy riding to you and I look forward to keeping up with you here! You are so sweet! Keep up the awesome work and thank you!

@@emilysimmons7318 Yay!! Best of luck with the MSF, but I'm sure you're ready for it. So happy you're loving the experience AND that your husband joined you. As nerve wracking as it can be to be a new rider, you'll never again feel that exact same sort of excitement once you've become experienced. All the best to both of you.
