  • Bees can do amazing things in 2 weeks. ordered some queens from Hawaii so I could get a jump on beekeeping season with early splits. How did it work out? How fast were the splits ready to upgrade to bigger boxes?

    Very exciting Spring! Everything seems to be falling into place - early winter break, healthy bees, introduction for the new queens and exploding brood and new population.
    Nothing succeeds like success!

    they need drawn comb. they dont consider the foundation space, and they cant draw it out fast enough so the brood nest is plugged up, hence the swarm cells. I run 8 frames and a feeder in my 10 frame box

      They are going to do fine. They have a lot of that foundation drawn out now.

    Nice queens and NUCs Bruce!! With the season just beginning and you putting feed in there, outside of separating any brood, I don't think it matters where you put those frames. The way those bees are, with that feed, they'll be drawn out in any position. The foundation next to the feeder I believe is the only one that is needed in it's current position. You have some great hula queens right there...

      Yeah man I am excited. The bees are definitely drawing them out. Beautiful queens and looking great 3 weeks in. Hopefully they will keep things rolling! Will be interested to see how they look 3 months down the road.

    I would put the feeder all the way over against the box and leave the same size space on each end of the frames that way they can draw it out easier. I agree on the checker boarding. You could try both ways and see what works best. Great video.

    Next time you remove wonky comb, rub it on the plastic foundation you took it away from. Waxed foundation results in more regular comb (and it will make it easier for the bees).

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah this foundation is all waxed and most of it is heavy waxed. Admittedly I have not applied fresh wax before placing in hives. Most gets drawn out fine. Occasionally there is a wonky frame here or there.

    Put the bees next to the feeder instead of the foundation.
    Also with drilling holes I think much less than 3/4 would have been sufficient. Also if you look at the bottom board where it was dark, that's where the water sits. But it seemed you drilled mostly where it was light.
    Either way, this is an awesome video and thank you for sharing. Thumbs up!

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 місяці тому +1

      I wondered about that and asked a commercial beek friend what he recommended. This is what he suggested. They are drawing the comb out like crazy. Honestly they will probably draw them out either way.
      Those pallets had just been placed there before the splits. They had been used previously in other spots.
      Smaller holes might work just fine as well.
      Thanks for checking in!

    Bruce, for your bottom, how did you decide on a 3/4" hole for drainage? Do you screen it? worry about shb access?
    I have water collecting and am thinking about doing the same.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 місяці тому

      Nothing scientific. Just a bit I had. Seems about right. Haven’t noticed more SHB with drainage holes such as these.

    Loved the video, Bruce. i do want to see if they build comb behind that feeder. I use those same feeders and love the ease of use,but cramming 9 frames in there doesn't work for me either

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 місяці тому +1

      We will see. I hate not having some space to manipulate frames. 9 frames are just too many IMO. I think it’s going to be ok.

    • @brucesbees

    Hi Bruce. Thanks for your video. One or two questions. At about 8:00 into your recording you showed the new Hawaiian queen and placed her into your waiting deep box. I like to make sure that the queen is in the middle of the frame and always gently pushed up to that side of the frame towards the other one already in the box. I don't want to squish her. And the frame that is heavy with honey that you previously took out of your nuc you put next to the opposite side of your box. My only worry is that the side that was on the very outskirts of your nuc is now facing that side across the box that your queen is on. I think I noticed that a little bit of that one side was drawn out more because it was next to the wall with a bigger bee space. So when you changed your mind and slid it across the box right up to the frame that had the queen on it, I feel you may have injured her with the protruding honey frame side. I hope that wasn't the cast. Just a little concerned that's all. Thanks again for the nice instruction of transporting a five frame nuc that was about to bomb out, swarm, before things got too crowded. People don't realize that when you buy a wall to wall 5 frame nuc and don't put them in a bigger box right away and wait weeks or add an empty fully drawn 5 frame box on top that you could have a problem if they get too congested. Sorry about the long comment. Good luck in those queen cell splits. 🐝
