- This easy sewing technique that any beginner can follow gives you a clean finish on your pretty fabric border to turn a diaper into a burp cloth, and is quick to make. I take you step by step through the process of how I embroider and sew cloth diapers to make a pretty personalized baby shower gift.
Supplies:
I used to use the Koala Baby/Essentials brand of 6 ply cloth diaper from Babies R Us - since they closed, I've been using OsoCozy brand, in prefolds.
Double fold Bias tape - I love this bias tape from ShopBethanyLane -

Great video instructions. Made one today, impressed.
Awesome video
I enjoyed following the easy directions. Mines turned out beautifully. Thanks
Nevermind I saw it in your description lol, I couldn’t find it with it only on the edge, the crochet edge I’ve found is doubled I guess you could say lol.
Thank you! I was about to do it ALL wrong!
Thank you soooo much I try to do this in sooooo many ways and the diapers always look weird this way looks awesome!!
Great video! What type of print fabric did you use?
Thank you for doing this video. The reinforcements from the $store, how do you use them? Thank you.
I use them on my fabric to mark my center point of the design, then after the fabric is in the hoop, I align my needle to it.
Your video was very helpful . Do you have anther video showing how to do a embroidery design on burp cloth? I am having trouble doing it .
What are you having trouble with, specifically?
Made a burp cloth from your directions and it was easier. But my bottom is a little crooked. When you sewed the bias tape down did you sew at the top or the bottom edge?
I sewed at the bottom edge and made sure it was pinned straight across before sewing it down. You should be able to use your seam ripper to pull it out and redo that part to get it straight.
Hello what is that thing you are holding down to get the fabric cut and straight. Great video
It’s a clear quilting ruler with a handle added.
Are you running a top stitch along both edges of the bias tape?
No, I'm just doing it more or less in the middle or a little lower. Since it's double-fold and half of it goes completely behind the fabric, it holds and doesn't curl or come up.
Ha! I really thought I was the only one that kept chop sticks in her sewing room!
This is by far the prettiest burp cloths k have seen. Thank you for sharing. What type of fabric are you using for border, is it flannel or cotton? Thank you.
How do I avoid curling on the sides of the diaper from stitching the material onto it? I cant seem to be able to do this without this happening.
Hi Kim. I’ve not had this happen, but I am guessing if the border fabric is slightly shorter or has less stretch than your diaper, it could do that. It may be the brand of diaper has some give to it, while the woven border does not. When you align the border fabric, try not smoothing it out too tightly before pinning and sewing it down. This may give you a smidge extra room when you turn it. Also, be sure you are sewing close to the edge of the diaper as you go.
So cute! Where did you get the knob for you ruler?
I bought it at a fabric shop, but you can also use the suction cup handles they sell at hardware stores, featured in one of my other videos: ua-cam.com/video/2eAzumHkb3w/v-deo.html
Can you tell me the font and frame you used?
The font is Empress by Itch to Stitch, and the frame is from Embroidery Boutique (I think it comes with their circle monogram).
This is a great video! Thank you so much! What kind of sewing machine are you using?
I use a Juki f600.
Do you use a software program to make monogram?
Yes, I use Embrilliance Essentials and purchase BX fonts.
Love the video! What size are the diapers, please?
Unfortunately Babies r us closed so now I use Osocozy brand, the diapers are around 12x16”
I get the gerber prefold diapers. When i prewash them they come out with pills and look not so nice. Is there a brand that works better?
I like Osocozy brand. I have found them on Amazon. Also, if you have a Hobby Lobby near you, they have a store brand that are nice.
Ugh yes!! That was my same problem. I had been using the Gerber brand to make embroidered burp cloths since 1996. Then suddenly they changed them. They came out of the dryer looking like an accordion and all pilly. No amount of pressing could fix them. I have had to find other solutions like terry or toweling which don’t have the same result. I will try the brand you suggested. Thanks.
What does the back look like?
It looks like the reverse of normal embroidery. I don't generally cover the back.
You could hand appliqué a round label on the reverse to cover the reverse monogram.
Where did you get this bias tape?? I’m literally looking everywherreeee for it, there’s crochet bias but the edge is wider than the one your using
From Bethany Lane on Etsy! They have the cutest trims!
