  • Welcome Back!
In this new series I will be starting to rebuild my 2004 Yamaha R1 that came to me as a basket case. The goal for this series is to attempt to rebuild it as originally as possible for a little as possible. Some shortcuts will be made.
In this second video we will be assembling the crankcase.

Better, clearer information than what you will find in the service manual! Good job!

Excellent. I'm rebuilding a 2005 R1 engine and this has been very helpful.

I never got that torqueing than loosening the bolts... Prestretching of bolts or what !? Great Chanel by the way!👌👌👌

I am not 100% positive of the reason, but yamaha call for it on this engine. I would suspect it has something to do with making sure the bearing shells are seated correctly and case sealant.

    I love it. Awesome details.
Maybe don’t use a wobble extension on your torque wrench. Keep wrenching!!!!

Do you remember where you ordered new bolts from since they are torque to yield bolds?

Hey awesome detailed video. I recently picked up 04 R1 5vy...and discovered that the bolt hole for bolt 22 @ 19:37 one with the copper washer...is stripped out. Bolts is just not catching. Would you recommend a heli coil or time sert? Also would be able to get away with just dropping the oil pan and lower crank case without dismantling the entire motor to get the job done?don't have much rebuilding experience hence the questions? Thanks in advance

Man that is pretty tricky.. It possible but really you would want to pull the engine, because it needs to be upside down to keep the crank in. One of the other issue is with a time-cert or helicoil you have to worry about the shaving going down in the blind hole (thats in the upper case). The first thing i might try in this case is a 1/4 longer bolt if it does not bottom out too bad.

Hi, thank you for taking the time and efford to make these incredible videos!
I was wondering, if you happened to know is there any difference between 5vy engine blocks from an R1 and FZ1?
I'm starting a project where I build a 2004-2006 R1 piece by piece, starting from the engine.
I'm looking at ebay listings and there is a 5vy block from an R1 for 160€ and a 5vy block from an FZ1 for 90€.

Only the 2006 Fz1 is the same as the 04-06. 04-05 was still the first generation Carburetor ones like the 98-01 r1. The 2007-2015 is simular but is more based on the 4c8 case from the 07-08 4 valve r1 but they did keep the earlier 5 valve head

my 05 r1 rotor granaded and i think some magnet debris have come lose into the engine block. to what an extent do i have to disassemble the engine to make sure if any debris is in there?

      @DeWoodysShop  Рік тому +1

Pretty extensively really. I would want at the very min to pull the oil pump and check it and the screen. then the oil cooler is extremly likely to get debris stuck in it so really want to clean that. you may be able to avoid splitting the case if the inside of the pump is still clean/good.

Can the sealant used go out and cause coolant and oil to mix in your engine?

    • @DeWoodysShop

I've never seen it happen. It's basically a thin film when the cases are joined.

Hey I’m first time engine rebuilder and was looking for any general advice. Picked up 05 r1 with cracked lower engine block cover.from a chain snapping. Any tips or advice on how to accomplish replacing just the block outer case?

Its a tricky thing, because you need a matching upper and lower crankcase halves, then you will need to make sure you have the right main bearings. You have to match the numbers on the crank with those on the case you get and then get the correct color bearings. The other option is to find a complete good bottom end, which would be easier since you would not have to worry about the bearing sizing or splitting the case really. Just have to put piston, cylinders, top end and accessories on. Overall this series does show you how to do that. But the bottom would need to be completely apart like here. Also if you are interested I happen to have a complete bottom end, it is lower miles, the previous owner over heated it and warped the head and burnt through the head gasket, but the bottom end is great.
