Captain Signoff for Yacht Insurance Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran | Ep 10

  • Before we can sail our Leopard 45 home to Florida, our yacht insurance requires us to be signed off by a licensed Captain proving our competency on this new vessel. This was more stressful for Shannon as she originally thought the signoff process was only for Rob, not both of us. Watch and see how the 4 days with our Captains progressed and see if we get signed off.
Follow our journey as we plan a 4yr circumnavigation visiting 40 countries spanning 6 continents on a budget of $4,000/mo.

Fantastic job! I just discovered your channel this morning and have been binging through each episode. You were 100% right to not wait to do this. The captain signoff episode so far is my favorite. I remember going through my ASA training. So much anxiety, and at the same time exhilaration. Bravo and great job. And never let Rob take the helm. Both of you fight to helm. It makes you both stronger and you will come
together on it. I see the “TEAM” in you.

Awww!!!! Thank you SO much!!!! I think we are a pretty good team too. Not sure that always translates especially in stressful situations. So far, I keep pushing myself to take the helm and avoid my fears - will see how that goes. I needed your encouragement today! Tks SO much!

Thanks so much! We plan to just keep practicing in calm conditions until we gain confidence. Picking up a mooring on a 28ft express cruiser is a lot easier than the 45😊

My wife and I chartered from mooring in the BVI and I can assure you no-one checked any of the reefing sheets. All three reefs were so tangled so bad I couldn't get the main up for two days. I was able to clear the 2nd reef on day two. Our experience with Mooring in the BVI was good. I had a bulge pump alarm in the engine room stick in the on position and I couldn't reach the pump. It was my first time on a Fountaine-Pajot. I made a call the the marina and they came right out and fixed it. You need to be about 100lbs to get behind the motor to reach the pump. No go for me. I'm 225lbs. lol! Enjoy your new boat!

Looks like fun training! We have chartered in the BVI's several times and loved it!. We now cruise seasonally to the Bahamas from Pensacola. Headsets can come in handy when anchoring or catching a mooring ball especially on windy days. It allows you to pass distance from the the mooring to the helm and speed to the bow. You will never miss a mooring and have easier anchoring. The brief is a good discipline as well as a debrief. Checklists are a good idea, especially while you are getting used to the boat and you may have periods between sails.

Thanks so much for the tips! We do have headsets but they were in St. Thomas. 😊 Robs always been at the helm and I’ve always picked up the mooring or anchored so we just need time & practice to gain confidence in new roles.

Great job guys. Shannon did wonderful. She will make a great Captain. Getting used to being on a Big boat and all its nuances takes time. I am sure the trip back to Florida helped a bunch. GOD bless guys.

Shannon, you did totally awesome. Huge pat on the back. You're ahead of 90% women who have "the Husband" on the boat, and are considered just devk and galley slaves. Amazing accomplishment. Sometimes, relationships even survive on cruises around tge world. Best when the women are captains. But most men's ego can't go that far...

Thank you for your comment. He is just used to being the Captain. I have always learned how to drive, dock, anchor our smaller boats in the past but he was the primary Captain. He knew how nervous I was about having to master all the techniques in 72hrs - but I did it! I had to pull up my big girl panties and make it happen! Thanks for watching

Thank you for sharing this journey so far and keeping in the stressful parts, its definitely refreshing to see this reality, and a good study guide for those looking to do the same thing!
If you were to do this again, would you still go through the Moorings, or buy from a private seller? What has been some of the pros and cons?

    • @SailingParadiseFalls
      @SailingParadiseFalls  Рік тому +1

Thank you! We watched channels for the past 7 years and I seemed to enjoy and learn most from the "real" parts. I am trying to do my best but honestly when crap hits the fan the last thing I think of is to grab the camera (nor do I really want to show the world) - but I am trying to do better :)
If we were to do this again, yes, I do think we would purchase from the Moorings. Obviously, if there was not such a high demand for cats we would have loved to purchase though a private seller but it wasn't in the cards for us. In the back of our minds we had always thought we would buy a used cat through the Moorings - that was at least out plan due to the affordability.
In the end, if you do your due diligence, stay on top of the brokers and yacht manager, you do end up with a really great boat. She's not perfect but she has been tested over the past 5 years and we know her weak points. The Moorings fixed almost everything on the survey and more and probably would have fixed everything had we had more time to spend on the dock in Tortola. The system is not perfect but we met several other owners that were purchasing their 2nd or 3rd boat from the Moorings.
We plan to make more videos about our experience to help other prospective buyers so stay tuned :)

That's so funny that you said that because we were just talking about that! We are going to hire a captain to come on our boat to teach just me (Rob can film of take a nap) in the next few weeks. I want to do this to gain more confidence in my skills and I tend to do better with people teaching me other than Rob :)
