They were gifted men given to the Church and appointed by God (Eph. 4:11, 1 Cor. 12:28) for the purpose of helping to lay the foundation of the Church (Eph. 2:20). They, like the apostles, received God’s revelation (Eph. 3:5) and truth and proclaimed it to their churches. It is important to remember that the early Church did not have a completed Bible, so God granted this revelation for the purpose of teaching His message to the Church. The New Testament prophets also spoke forth and taught the apostles’ doctrine. Everything taught by these prophets had to be consistent with the teaching of the apostles (1 Cor. 14:36-37). So, are prophets still needed today? Looking at the two functions listed above, we can see that the office of prophet is one that is no longer necessary and has ceased within the Church because: The foundation of the Church was laid long ago. And God’s revealed Word was completed with the close of the New Testament canon. The Church’s foundation does not need to be laid again and there is no need for further revelation beyond what God has provided for us in His complete Word, the Bible. Today we are blessed to have Scripture as our complete and final authority in all things (2 Tim. 3:16-17). If someone now claims to have received a “special revelation,” we must test it against Scripture. If it is contrary to the Word of God, then it must be rejected. If it is consistent with Scripture, then we have to ask why an “extra” word was necessary if its truth is already contained in the Bible. So while we always need men who are willing to proclaim boldly the Word of God as contained in Scripture (as pastors, teachers, and evangelists), there is no need for the office of “prophet” as it existed in the New Testament.
Brother, your scripture references are good, and it is true that the bible is the final authority in all things. Nevertheless, the bible does not say that its completion would result in the removal of apostles and prophets; that is a man-made doctrine which makes the word of God of none effect (Mark 7: 13). As you wrote, Eph. 2: 20 declares that the church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, but does it say that is the only role of the apostles and prophets? No. You yourself referenced Eph. 4: 11, which mentions the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher. Now, according to Eph. 4: 12-13, each of these five ministry gifts is given for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. How can you do away with two of these offices when the same bible, which you say is our final authority, states that Jesus gave all five offices to accomplish the tasks listed in Eph. 4: 12 - 13? There is no teaching anywhere in the scriptures which says only 3 offices will remain after the bible is completed and that those three offices will be enough in the last days to accomplish what Jesus appointed all five to do in the former days. If that teaching is not in the bible, it means a man who did not write the bible made it up. What about Rev. 11: 3; 10? These are two witnesses who would prophesy after John completed the book of Revelation, the last book written in the bible. If all prophets died after the completion / compilation of the bible, God would be contradicting himself by sending two prophets after the bible was completed. Jesus, who has risen and lives, is an apostle, prophet, pastor, teacher, and evangelist. And we say he lives in us, right? That means every true believer filled with the Spirit of God should function in each of these areas to some degree, so we need each of the five offices to equip the saints to function in each of these areas. Herein lies one of the primary reasons we still need apostles and prophets today. Men, who trust in their intellects more than the power of God, and who regurgitate teachings taught them by their religious organizations, have, with the best of intentions, removed the true foundation of the church, which is Jesus Christ, his message, and his power. Then, they laid in its place a weak foundation of natural-minded, intellectual conversion which takes away the resurrection power of the gospel. Be that as it may, the church is called to be a governmental body that operates according to the will, way, wisdom, and power of Jesus Christ. Apostles and prophets, along with pastors, teachers, and evangelists, will exist until the church comes into the measure of the stature of Jesus Christ. That is a tall order, so we need every Christ-ordained gift to fill it.
Also lets not forget 1 Corinthians 13:8New International Version (NIV) 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
Isaiah 53:5, he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes, we are healed. For salvation, we just need to follow the way they did it in Acts? They were baptized in water for the removal of sins and filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38! Here's why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled and rising again from the dead. That's what Acts 2:38 is. We must obey the gospel, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ... Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in Heaven. St John 3:3-5, EXCEPT a man, be born of WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of GOD. We can't come up with our own gospel. Galatians 1:8-9, But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Don't be cursed. One way for all people. Jews, Gentiles, and Samaritans. Our salvation has to match up with the scriptures and no scriptures on the subject can be taken away. Eternity is TOOO long to be WRONG! st, John 5:39, Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. The gospels show what Christ has done on the cross for us. The book of Acts shows us the beginning of Christ's Church and how to enter the Church, obeying Acts 2:38. The letters were written to the Church to show us how to behave now that we are born again into the Church. It's better to walk alone than to walk with a crowd going in the wrong direction. Are we supposed to follow the teachings of the apostles? Acts 2:42, And they continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrines. Ephesians 2:20, We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Don't get Titus 3:5 mixed up with James 2:14-26, about WORKS. One is a WORK of your OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS OR GOOD DEEDS and the other is a WORK OF FAITH. Titus 1:16, They profess that they know God; but in WORKS they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. God bless you
