    When Mark said "Tom is alone. _Completely_ alone." I thought it was going to be Major Tom (sitting in his tin can, far above the world).
    Considering the actual Tom it turned out to be, I'd argue that, while the _character_ was indeed alone, Tom was there with a huge crew.

      Yup. For the sake of argument though, it still makes sense about alone "in context", as in he does not share the risk of getting hit with other people on set, he was "alone" in the sense that only him is getting dangled by the wire, alone in the experience of the actual stunt.

      Same, thought about major Tom, and couldnt figure out why heavier shoes would matter in microgravity.

    I hope Mark finds a better microphone next time he comes on. Considering that this podcast is audio-only for the most part, audio quality seems pretty important.

      It might not be a microphone issue - to my untrained ears this sounds more like a compression issue which seems like internet problems.

      @@MrMartinSchou It's definitely a microphone issue. The microphone on the airpods/airpod pros sound awful. If you ever listen to a friend, or anyone speak to you using the airpods it's so difficult to understand.

      That *is* the locally recorded file, through Riverside.fm. We tend to find AirPods don't have great mics - we'll probably ask guests to use their laptop mic in future.

      @@ScopeSource AirPods are generally the worst thing you can wear. Sound quality is average for most in-ears, they have an open end which makes every person in public transport hate you, as mentioned - the mic quality is awful aswell and for the price you can get way better.
      Just me dropping my 2 cents/pennies

    Mark made me feel old, he's thinking of the 1996 movie when he says "original Mission Impossible", not the 1966 tv series. Not that I saw it that year as I was only two and not American but I did watch it a few years later on a black and white tv (my parents did not get a colour tv till the 70's) dubbed in French (my first language).

    My mind immediately went to weight distribution but I was thinking about space / zero gravity instead. To be fair, I've never seen any of the mission impossible movies.

      In Space there is still gravity.
      In order to achieve 0 gravity you would have ro be in constant free fall like the ISS.

    Gonna take this opportunity to point out that Tom Scott has full actual subtitles on all his videos across several channels and Mark can't be bothered to put them on his one channel that has way more subscribers.

      Well to be a bit fairer, Tom doesn't seem to be doing it himself. There's a link to the caption service at the outro, if you have subtitles on. Though they do do a good job.

      @@dryued6874 I've mentioned that in comments on Mark's channel. Of course Tom or Mark or similar are not going to do the subtitling themselves but there are many affordable services that do it.

    The inconsistent microphone quality among everyone is slightly distracting and hard to listen to when it's a long podcast.
    I'm sure it's tricky to arrange these, but surely guests like ex-NASA Mark Rober have a better mic setup than just using his ear buds ;)

      I see no reason not to suspent Tom Scott from a hardness to see what would happen. He could get Matt to help. "Hi! In the movie, Tom Cruise hacks the CIA like this, so I've got a dangle-thingy harness for my friend Tom and an old PC running Windows 98. Let's see how long it takes him to pull up some files."

      For the same reason that people haven't learned to mute themselves if they're not speaking and have something noisy going on around them.

      I've heard many colleagues via €15 headsets sound fine, hence my surprise of people still using such bad mics. Just using one that is somewhat close to your mouth, in stead of in your ear or on your chest, is more than fine.

      When Tom was hanging from the ceiling in the harness and horizontal, he was probably a little top heavy with his head hanging down too low so they added the coins in his shoes to balance him out like an old style balance scale.

      You used to have to work hard to be a pedant. Now it seems just having watched some old-ish TV shows is enough. Pedantry really needs to raise its bar.

    my guess was:
    The metal will trigger a metal detector, usually this isn't necessary because they wear steel reinforced safety shoes.

    Also, coins in your shoes will allow you to not hit your head on barrier gates by tricking the magnetic sensor into thinking that you're a car.
    No, they probably won't, but I don't think that technical detail was the reason why they rejected my Mission: Impossible script. Something about lack of excitement and also the fact that there's plenty of space under the gate for Tom Cruise to run through.

    I'd say it mattered a lot which small dense item it was. Any other coin weighs a few grams tops but this one is one pound.

    Initial thoughts: the ferromagnetic properties of the coins was enough to be detected by sensors to keep a gate raised, or some such (similar to mopeds adding on a big magnet so automated traffic lights get triggered).
    To remind him, and have cash on hand, to pay for some mechanism (e.g. gates), and/or having to reach down to pay reminds him to stay low and safe?
