The Snowden files -- the inside story of the world’s most wanted man | Luke Harding | TEDxAthens

  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. "We now know, thanks to Edward Snowden- that all of us, Greek citizens, Brits, Americans are being spied and that all of our data - whether its text messages, selfies, G-allocation data from our iphones that we carry around with us - is being collected. Luke thinks that Snowden has done the world a great service by revealing this and thinks it’s got profound implications for democracy - and for all of us - for anyone who uses Facebook or Google or downloads videos from UA-cam and so on.
So that’s the big picture. On a micro level what we can do about this as citizens?"
Luke Harding is a journalist, writer and award-winning correspondent with the Guardian. He has reported from Delhi, Berlin and Moscow and covered wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Ukraine. Between 2007 and 2011 he was the Guardian's Moscow bureau chief. The Kremlin expelled him from the country in the first case of its kind since the Cold War.
His latest book "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" was published in February by Guardian Faber. In June Oliver Stone bought film rights. Luke is the author of three previous non-fiction books. They are "The Liar: The Fall of Jonathan Aitken" (1997), nominated for the Orwell Prize; and "WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy" (2011), both written with David Leigh. The screen rights to Wikileaks were sold to Hollywood and the film, "The Fifth Estate", starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Bruhl, came out in 2013. "Mafia State: How One Reporter Became an Enemy of the Brutal New Russia" appeared in 2011. His books have been translated into 20 languages.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. What’s your point, exactly? Freedom of speech isn’t a remedy, it’s preventative. As are laws to PREVENT the invasion of privacy. These laws are legislative (ie preventative) as opposed to judicial, which take place AFTER the preventative measure is ineffective. My analogy is sound. Maybe next time post an original thought rather than a quote. Then, you will have arrived at said thought independently and have a true understanding of its premise, thereby “preventing” yourself from embarrassing yourself in the future.
Edit: I didn’t recognize the text smiley, at the end of your post. It seemed snide, initially, but on reconsideration, it may be playful. If it is the latter, I apologize if I came off a bit cold. Regardless, may truth, happiness and humanity surround you in all you do.

It's unfortunate to hear how Snowden gave his freedom and risked his life for speaking the truth and trying to protect people. He warned people that their privacy is being violated, hoping they would be more careful, and his award for taking this risk is being one of the most wanted people in the USA. It's sad how good people get punished for telling the truth, but people who committed a real crime are still walking around unpunished.

Snowden would have had a trial and been put in jail with due process if he were captured by American authorities. He was and still is too high profile to just be executed under suspicious circumstances. If he were a Russian spy who tried to share secrets with the world or other governments he would be executed if caught. The irony is Snowden himself say he doesnt want to live in a world where everything he said, wrote, etc wasnt private....but now that hes living in Russia that's exactly the type of world hes living in

A Chinese friend called me using WeChat video recently and we had been chatting for a good 45 minutes when she asked me "Hey, have you heard about what's going on in Hong Kong?" I replied "Of course, I've been keeping track of it" and I began to let her know about the latest updates I've learned, since she's in mainland China and dealing with BS news reporting. As soon as I started talking about it, our connection got bad and our call dropped. WeChat gave a couple of messages, one being that the connection was "unstable" and then it was disconnected.
Up until our discussion about HK, there was nothing at all said about anything political and our connection was just fine. She was on wifi and so was I. These types of things have happened before and no one can have me believe it's merely coincidence.

Repression is no repression if people embrace it out

Blackberry harder to hack??? The company admitted around 2004 that its operating system was insecure and that it couldn't be *made* secure. That's why most governments prohibit anyone with access to classified information from using them. That's also one of the reasons why Hillary Clinton hosted her own email server, because the State Department refused to install the insecure Blackberry software or to support her insecure phone. They are tax shelters they have little six by eight rooms and that is we're all American businesses are registered for tax shelter purposes 350 of them are owned by DuPont the Chiefs are holding company! The first business in America was making Buckshot for guns for war this was DuPont! Who today owns Remington guns and ammunition! They also control the chemical industry they invented nylon anything made of nylon including stockings they make money from they own the patent! They invented Agent Orange which destroyed millions of lives including our own soldiers in Vietnam! The world hates America, cuz we use our military to just take what we want! Read the Bible Mark chapter 13, Matthew chapter 24, John chapter 21! Watch!

So they took their artwork, their pianos, and their gold candlesticks and Jewelry and came to America, and started America by manipulating the Louisiana Purchase, and then, the 13 colonies with Delaware as a tax shelter! Little tiny closets registered as home bases two major American corporations which are held by the duponts in secret! Companies like Wendy's, Radio Shack excetera excetera excetera

To my knowledge Snowden never quite covered this one; although I'm quite sure he does know about it.
For a number of years the NSA and a few other alphabet organizations have used NSA tools as a method to finance their operations. Basically think of it as insider trading.
Using insider knowledge to then trade on Wall Street. The NSA (and others) also have the ability to manipulate the market, and also hold any Fortune 500 company at bay

    I name you 'Judas', Harding.
"With not a penny going to WikiLeaks, a hyped Guardian book led to a lucrative Hollywood movie deal. The book’s authors, Luke Harding and David Leigh, gratuitously abused Assange as a “damaged personality” and “callous”.
They also revealed the secret password Julian had given the Guardian in confidence and which was designed to protect a digital file containing the US embassy cables.
With Assange now trapped in the Ecuadorean embassy, Harding, who had enriched himself on the backs of both Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, stood among the police outside the embassy and gloated on his blog that “Scotland Yard may get the last laugh”."

Is that basically thats saying fact wise? What can money do to help u out a ecroprison? Doubt theres bail. U mean money to rise awareness? I am American and a strict constitutionalist. I believe in a strong nation. Strong defense. Anti terrorism. That being said, I believe equally in our rights. Our civil liberties. Our privacy and right to anonymity.
I'm torn between our need for national security, and our right to privacy. That being said when it comes to data mining, spying on nationals and basically "guilty until proven innocent" it's like I teach my children, "if you have to ask yourself, 'is this wrong/should I do it?' the answer is almost always NO."

It's a very intresting topic. I try to view the privacy situation as follows.
Let's scale it down to company level yiu want a security guard, guarding your company. And the security guard needs access to every room. This is where I agree. However right now the security guard is looking at all the employees while they go to the bathroom, the security guard is watching everything so closely he misses how the cleaning lady is stealing money from the vault and only notices 1 out of 10 burglers.

John Kean you might not have any information that seems important or worth spying on, but when all of that information is analyzed by AI they can predict how to manipulate you and others through media and political issues. A country divided cannot stand, so fracturing our population gives politicians leverage. If we become truly united in issues we have the power. Cambridge Analytica has already used this technology during the 2016 presidential campaign, they are responsible for a lot of the “lock her up” and “crooked Hilary” posts on Facebook. We also never know how they might use this information in the future.

I've had quite a few instances where it was clear that someone was recording... especially between 2015 and 2017 ..not so much now.. but definitely before Data farms became common and they had to listen in real time I think they were like a kid in a candy store when the technology first came out ..it was probably more about learning it's limits rather than spying on anyone directly... quality control purposes..
