I live in the U.S. and I'm part Scottish and Irish when I first saw the last episode in season 2. I fell in love this show make me feel very proud of my Scottish blood line. And I'm try to find it on T.V. ; when it come on T.V. I miss it.
If you have cable TV, you can actually watch all the episodes out (From Season 1 episode 1 to current) on Starz. There's an app you can get on Google Play or in the Apple store. Sign up for an account through your cable provider (even if you have Direct TV or Dish). Once you have it, download the app and sign in using your cable account. Outlander is one of the main reasons we went to Scotland. Watching the scenery made me really want to see your beautiful country in person! I was not disappointed.
I remember being taught Scottish History at primary school and high school, not so much about Scottish clans and who they where and what purpose they had, but I still remember learning Scottish History, and some stuff about Jacobites, I remember having to design my own tartan and what Jacobite clans we would be.

Frankly, some Americans are pretty perplexed that Britain is still a monarchy and that the whole of Ireland and Scotland are not independent nations. Most of us, do understand how Britain dominated the rest of the world. To us the Scots are similar to the Native Americans who were conquered and subjugated. I am very mixed with some Scot ancestry. Live near Seattle, Washington where the yearly gathering is always well attended. Highland games are enjoyed here as well. Related to Gordon clan and have no knowledge of their political history . A friend tells me not to go to the wrong beer tent.

I've actually became more interested in our history and discovered historic places I've never heard of before through the series from visiting the filming locations! Definitely recommend Doune castle, Midhope castle (lallybroch) and Falkland (portrayed as Inverness).
I am from the USA and I just want to ask if it is true that you guys aren't taught much about the clans in school and if you have any idea why the clans aren't taught much in schools?
It depends from school to school but no, we don't get taught much about Scottish history. I got a little about Jacobites but I remember thinking "what are Jacobites??" :P My dad and grandad got no Scottish history and we certainly don't (in my experience) get any lessons on clans which completely obscures anything we do get taught. I think it stems back from a silencing of Scottish history, believing that it breeds nationalism. Not sure. Certainly, the teachers here have a little bit more freedom with lessons because there is no fixed curriculum for what needs to be covered. I guess if the teachers don't know anything about clans they aren't likely to teach it? Again, not sure!
I am multiracial with heritage of Native American, German, and African American. I love the show and I have developed a sincere respect for the Scottish culture and history. The beautiful scenery is amazing. Hope to see Scotland for myself one day, so I can experience the air, the beautiful Scottish people and the land the clans fought for. I hope the Scottish schools seek to teach more of the history to its youth so the young people can have awareness and deeper pride in your country's flag. God Bless.
Yarncandybycherie it's not the Scottish schools. Scotland is a colony of England and they can't do anything the English don't agree with. The same was done in Northern Ireland and Wales. Most people were actually taught that the Irish people died from a natural famine until recently 😂
I am an Outlander lover. Went to Scotland and visited the highlands, but missed most of the film sights. Made it to Culloden and took a picture with the Frazer headstone. Glad that tourism has increased. Hope to return again and see more of the West side of the Country. SO BEAUTIFUL.
Hi, glad to see Outlander finally making its presence felt among Scottish audiences. I'm a Scot, living in Glasgow. I first found the TV show, back in 2014 before it was released here, (yes tut tut I watched it online, blah blah whatever). The entirety of Season 1 was filmed in Scotland, either on location or at the Cumbernauld studios, which Tall Ships Productions have put a lot of money into. The second season was mainly filmed in Scotland, with a little bit in Prague (standing in for 18th century Paris) and some in England. The third season, again a bit in Scotland, but as it's based on the 3rd book called "Voyager" which mainly takes place on ships, the existing "Black Sails" sets in South Africa were used. Season 4, which is set mainly in North Carolina, is still going to be filmed in Scotland, both at the studios in Cumbernauld and on locations around Scotland standing in for the mountains of North Carolina (at least that's the current plan). For the most part, I couldn't care less about the odd accent being a bit off, as long as the acting and story is interesting. Also, like everyone else, I've learned more about Scottish history from this show and these books than I ever did at school, which is pretty sad really.
Strange thing was that the series was originally supposed to air on Channel 4 back in 2015. Then the independance referendum happened and the series was pulled, possably due to political reasons as it was feared buy some that it would influence the vote.
Well, not quite. The email from an internal Sony person says: "Your meeting with Prime Minister Cameron will likely focus on our overall investment in the U.K. - with special emphasis on the importance of Outlander (particularly as Scotland contemplates detachment this Fall)" - but there is no report on what they *actually* talked about, so we know that Sony thought that Cameron might bring the topic up, but we don't know for sure whether he did.
Wow it is so bizarre that you were not taught about Scottish history in school. Glad to know the show is making you guys search and learn more about it because as a Brazilian i love it!!
I live in the Highlands, the kids are taught Scottish history, we regularly get schoolkids round the museum where I work, I am involved in our teaching programme, we cover Jacobites, the Battle of Inverlochy, WW2 In Fort William, castles and vikings
The fact that y'all are not taught Scottish history blows my mind. The funny thing is that the historic romance genre (which Outlander does not neatly fit) has been obsessed with Scotland and Scottish history for decades. Your average well read romance reader knows loads about the clans and Scottish culture! Personally, I have read at least 50 novels that explore historic Scotland.

Teresa B yes you're exactly right. I'm half Scottish and went to school there and in Texas. Native American history isn't taught, nor anything about the different tribes. That's why it wasn't taught in Scotland either. They didn't want to risk any more rebellions I guess.
Who knows why the Scots decided not to teach much of their own history - it's very odd. The Scottish education system is entirely separate from that in the rest of the UK, and has been so since it was created. It should be taught more, so that some of the myths can be set aside. For example, most people don't know that large amounts of the government ("British") forces were made up of Scots, and that the lowland Scots who were strongly Presbyterian and had fought wars to maintain the Presbyterian religion were ant-Jacobite because they were led and supported by Catholics. It's all rather complicated.
Obviously take the historical romance version of history with a pinch of salt. To be honest a lot of Scottish history gaps in their education system is the fault of English. We pretty much went in there to stop an uprising and massacred them followed by outlawing most of the highlander heritage including Gaelic. I'm English and had to admit we have some pretty horrific violent and dark moments in history.
I'm not going to lie. I was shocked that Scotland did not vote for independence during the referendum. That Cameron blocked the show explains a lot. The British forces were pretty evil and the disbanding of the clans - a crime against humanity.
Yes - the atrocities against the Jacobites after Culloden were appalling, and the 60 years of suppression of highland culture thereafter was not a shining moment for British democracy and tolerance! But civil wars (and the '45 was a civil war within Britain, and within Scotland itself) are usually nasty things.
More Scottish people are now seeing thro' the SNP, their policies and impossible promises, we entered into a union 300+ years ago when Scotland was bankrupt and during that time Scotland has prospered irrespective of what people say. SNP supporters have this mindset that we are still 'ruled' by England but seem to conveniently forget that anyone born in either Wales, England or Scotland can go onto lead the UK as Prime Minister. As far as Independence goes the SNP would just hand back control of Scotland to the un-elected EU officials and when they say jump...SNP would have to say 'How High'....far better as part of the UK (even with the current issues) than being a tadpole country in the EU with no real say in how we are run.

When you say we entered into a Union .you neglect to mention the majority of Scots were against this Union.. the nobles of Scotland were actually bribed into the Union as the English Monarchy knew we were struggling from the failed Dorian scheme in Panama and decided to ban trade between the two nations to further our troubles intentionally,,, thus the nobles and land owners would have seen no choice but to bend the knee ans sell us out..... the Scottish people had no say on the matter,, no vote, and in places riots occured and martial law was declared.... you say we entered the Union as if the Scottish people celebrated this .......................
No matter what happened at the time of the Acts of Union, the fact was that Scotland as an independent kingdom chose to pursue an empire and failed on multiple accounts to the point of being ruined. Don't forget that there was/is a significant national identity disparity between lowland Scots and highlanders, the highlanders being organised into clans were of course more prone to rebel and fuel themselves on nationalism. However, England offered a return to financial prosperity and access to all of her trading routes around the world if Scotland United to form Great Britain and shared in building the British empire. Also don't forget that democracy wasn't the standard, England had been exceptional in that it was relatively democratic for its time. I don't think it's fair to judge England's corruption or her parliament's actions based on modern democratic values. Think of France where the king's word was law, or Russia where a foreign wife was allowed to kill off her husband, the tsar, and take his throne herself. I don't see the English bribing Scottish lords as particularly out of line for the time period, God knows it went the other way around too (just look up the string of corrupt regents throughout the Stuart monarchy in Scotland) Looking back, we may have a romanticised view of the Scottish as a whole being oppressed, but many Scots chose of their own free will to sell the kingdom out and I don't think there was any sort of unity among the people that would suggest they were collectively victims and that their desperation was completely the fault of the English. Probably the worst of the traitors lived during the "Mary Queen of Scots very messy time" Once you read about that, the modern world is basically a democratic paradise... Truthfully the world was and always has been a messy place, the scots enjoy liberties now so I don't see any of this as a good cause to split up the union. And btw--the EU isn't "un-elected" for the one person who said that woefully misguided comment. It's more representative than the UK's shitty FPTP bullshit, you'd know if you'd ever bothered to research and vote in MEP direct elections but you probably haven't, choosing to sit by and complain as the easier pathway.
Ive just discovered and binge watched both seasons, I'm from the US and my interest in my own Scottish heritage has definatly peaked. A trip is definatly in the works!
Here in South America we love Outlander too! I'm from Brazil and there are quite a lot of people of people here who enjoy the show. I've never heard much about Scotland before, and I simply feel in love with it at first sight, such a beautiful place, very rich culture. The show is just AMAZING. Not just for the love story but because of the history of Scotland itself! Many people like me are now aware of some Scotland history because of the show❤
Shaun, I would just like to highlight that, yes, many things of the series / novels are not historically accurate (i.e. Burning witches was a practice no more at the 18th century) but as the author tells on the prologue of the books, at the end what she's writing is still a fictional story and sometimes it's hard to make it matches the historical facts by 100% in case she wants some fluidity on the novels. Yet, I do think she did a marvellous job and did her best to keep it as much accurate as she could. The novels are extremely well detailed (and long! About 1000 pages each!) and it's deffo worthy a try for those who are interested in Scotland history.
Clara P. In the Outlander book capter 25 it's trial by drowning, if pure float to the surface. In history, normally hanging or stoning which we all pretty much know by now. I'm sitting here reading comments from people and it's amazing that Scottish history is reborn and being taught again and that something like this can connect people from all over the world together. Watching Outlander actually made me want to discovery Scotland. I did it exactly one year ago and came back a second time. Outlander shows the beauty of Scotland and I am in love with Scotland. Thanks for the video.
One inaccuracy you might be speaking on regarding the boots. Jamie wears French Military boots. He served with a French unit. When we first meet Jamie, he was being picked up from returning from France. As for the other Highlanders foot wear I cannot speak on.

And after about a hour sitting there this scots/ italian guy with shoulder length black hair amd clothes sits next to me and wee start chatting. So after about a hour he says iam a actor ok cool i said what have you been in he says he currently stars in outlander ? which i havent seen before but ive heard of it i know its on amazon prime. Quite a few people knew him ?? he says he lives in hillhead and scottish name is Mark Smith ? i met up with his gf later on had a good night etc but for the love of me i cant find him anywhere on google or outlander cast ?? Can you help plz he seemed genuine and his gf also and some people did know him but i dont know if he is telling me the truth lol can you help with this cheers tony in edinburgh...
Shaun. I was glad to hear you share the lack of Scottish history offered to children, & adults in Scotland, until fairly recent. I'm a US citizen, born & raised Pacific Coast. My maternal grandfather's line came to American colonies in 1700's from Scotland via Ulster. So, our family has interest in Scottish, Irish, etc history. I married a Scotsman (fresh off the boat, I mean airtravel) from Scotland. At first I was surprised at how little he knew of his own countries history (I knew more than He), until I began researching the subject of Scottish education. Yes, finally Sct history is being taught in Sct & with all the research interest, books & Outlander series, a bit of Scottish history will be known to the world. Thanks for your videos.
Sad that the history of Scotland and the Scottish people and clans has been supressed or swept under the carpet for so long. I know many say that it is ancient history - yet it isnt that old , when you look at the last episode of Season 1 and you go to the memorial at Culloden afterward and understand the MAGNITUDE of 10 000 Bristish soldiers , mostly well fed and armed against a near starving poorly army of 3000 Highlanders armed with mostly hand to hand combat weapons you see how BARBARIC and yes it needs capitals - that battle was, it was a slaughter of a nation sadly. Also the episode with Black Jack and Jamie at the prison, its a story that most people dont want to acknowledge but it was then and is NOW a "fact" of war , that kind of sexual violence happened and just because it is ugly doesn't make it less tragic or necessary to be acknowledged. I ADORE Scotland , and tracing my own family roots ( Maiden name is SCOTT) has taken me down a crazy path too. Been to Scotland a good few times , was last there in June
Cullodden would have been less of a disaster if Prince Chas had actually LISTENED to his advisors, particularly in relation of the location of his cannons, sadly he was not a particularly effective leader, there was also tension between Irish and Scots Jacobites, both felt there was one Jacobite too many, and on the march back from Derby there was considerable desertion, as men returned to their farms and crofts. The Govt. troops were well armed and fed due to the efficiency of "Butcher Billy" who may not have been a particularly sympathetic character, but was a good administrator. History is generally told by the victors.
As an educator in Portland, Oregon, USA, I was saddened to hear that you didn't learn much about Scottish History in school, but very proud that an American did her research and presented so much of it in her stories. My husband and I also work in the film industry and appreciate the fine detail Moore and crew (including and especially his wife, costume designer Terri Dresbach) have brought to the small screen. I highly recommend looking up their back-story, including how she did NOT want to design this show! It's too much to tell here, but romantic and fascinating. Also interesting research is how Gab-AL-don (correct pronunciation) came to write the first book. I have recommended to many friends binge-watching the two seasons and several of them have commented that the rape and pillaging is just too difficult to watch and that "bodice-rippers" aren't usually their 'thing'. The beauty of watching a recording is that you can fast forward through those scenes and still get the concept of what's happening without losing important story lines. When people say they've found it trite, I feel sorry that they just didn't get it. Starz is bringing their 'A' game with this series and I thank them for it, knowing how challenging filming an accurately depicted story can be. Do they make a few mistakes, like inappropriate casting, yes, can a viewer overlook occasional blunders, yes. Most of it is criticism born of reading the novels. I am on #6 in the series of 9 original stories now and have to rewatch seasons 1 & 2 before season 3 premieres on Sept 10 or I will just be very confused :oP Good luck getting in to it all! It is a trip.

I involved all my family in a trip, next September because I want to see the locations of filming! I actually just started watching this series and didn't have a clue what it would be about. But I am very pleasantly surprised and loving it. It's made me get back into contact with my family in Ellon/Cruden Bay areas. I have never heard the stories from my families in that part of the world and am looking forward to learning about my ancestors history.

Scottish person here. I watched the first season and I enjoyed it. Bumped into this video by accident and it's made me want to watch some more. It's definitely an eye opener in terms of some of our history. Yes, I am one of those who was taught no real Scottish history in school. I asked about that and seem to remember being told I was being "parochial". You've made me wonder what other country in the world discourages it's citizens from knowing their past. Anyway, bad Scottish accents don't bother me....they are trying their best. You should hear my French accent.
The US pretty much gives only a quick brush by of native Americans. You maybe get a chapter or so about how they applied to mainly the English. No details into their cultures or anything.
My ancestors from Ukraine were oppressed by Stalin. They fled to survive. My baba forced into an arranged marriage. Their daughter my mom was beat at school for speaking Ukrainian. They were forced to assimilate. As for my fathers not so completely French side my grandmere was Irish/French. She denied it her whole life. Came from Dublin.
My family and I recently traveled to Scotland, never having read nor watched Outlander. Regardless of that, I found the country absolutely fascinating! I loved the rich countryside, the culture, and the history. The loss of life on Culloden Moor weighed really heavy with me and when I returned to the states, I found myself researching the event to learn more. Since returning, I have now become an Outlander fan. As a previous commentator mentioned, you are definitely in for a tumultuous ride. Enjoy!

I recently watched Outlander and absolutely fell head over heels in love with it, the Scottish history and the highlands. I'm so fascinated by the clans, the relationship with occupying British army and just life in Scotland 200 years ago. As a European I wish I knew more about your beautiful country. It's amazing to hear what watching Outlander is like for a Scottish person and realising how many things and attention to details they got right.
My parents and I watched Outlander and it inspired us to add Scotland to our European trip this pass Spring (we are American). We were not disappointed, it was not only beautiful, it turned out to be the favorite part of the trip for my parents. My stepfather found out a few months before we left that half of his family was from Scotland, actually near Inverness so he was really touched seeing where his ancestors came from. We can't wait to go back again, my stepfather is planning future golf trips there.

I love Outlander. One of the main things I noticed in the first season was how Scotland itself is a character in the story. The land has its own story, its own personality. You could probably write a whole novel where the mountains and the lochs and the forests, etc. are characters reporting what goes on around them throughout history.
I am watching this in 2020, so OUTLANDER is 6 years old. I am American and an a Outlander Addict. I have watched it dozens of times through all 5 seasons and am rereading the books for the third time. I am in several Outlander fan groups on Facebook, follow the cast and book author on Instagram and/or Twitter, and catch every TV appearance I possibly can. It is the best ever series. I got the courage to take a trip to Scotland, but it was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID. I am rescheduled for 2021, and I'll get there one day if I live long enough. I even want to buy a home there and live in Scotland part-time. I am in love with all things Scottish. Yes, Sam Heughan is gorgeous and Scottish although he has a different accent than Richard Rankin, whom I also love. Sam has an English mother and comes from some place I can't pronounce around Dumfries and Galloway. He has to change his accent for the series since he has a bit of a different accent, but do does Graham McTavish, who sounds more like Sam accent wise. Richard Rankin has a very deep Scottish accent that is a times hard to understand, but he is from a different part of Scotland. Every woman is in love with Sam Heughan. We call him The King of Men. I know they use different locations, but it doesn't bother me. It's because of weather and the difficulty of moving horses and other effects around. The producers explain their reasonings at the end of the episode and in interviews. Some episodes are filmed in South Africa (apparently you haven't gotten to that season). I love the history. I knew about the Jacobite Rebellion. I ran across it while doing some ancestry work several years ago. I found it fascinating and read quite a lot about it. Having knowledge of the rebellion only made the show more real. The show is so perfectly acted that it's very common in group discussions for people to actually leave reality and find themselves inside the show...like it's something we are watching in reality. Now that is excellent acting. The books are different from the show, but it is all perfect and very entertaining. It's filled with undying love and devotion, horror, war, history, beautiful scenery, mystery, difficult choices, sadness, joy, and yes, it's fiction. But it is so well written, directed, produced and perfectly acted I don't care about boots being out of place or where they filmed. I just want to the story to continue. Americans love this show and since there are people joining Facebook groups from all over the world, it is popular in many countries. The show is American produced by Sony pictures and airs on Starz network. I watch as many interviews as I can find. The reasons for altering book storylines and not using actual locations are all explained. They film 10 months of the year for 12 episodes so the weather influences choices and moving crew and production, animals and such and that affects everything. The producers often mention the rugged terrain and cold, rainy weather as reasons for making changes. The fact that some Scots don't like the series is almost sickening. It's a fantasy series. I should think Scots would be happy to have a Scottish show become one of the most popular series ever. I love your vlogs, and this one is old, but it bugs me that Scots criticize a Scottish-based show. We had a show called TURN about the American Revolution. It ran about 3 or 4 years. My husband and I loved it, but Americans failed to get heavily invested in the show and it was cancelled. Some people just don't enjoy history and prefer dumb reality shows about marrying a stranger or living in a house full of strangers, trying to undermine each other to win a million dollars. Nobody is foolish enough to think TURN was perfectly aligned with what actually happened in the 1700s...I mean all we have to go by is what was recorded in history, and it darn sure wasn't filmed in the actual locations but on a Hollywood set. At least Outlander is filmed, for the most part, in Scotland. Be proud, not critical.
Not about outlander but something you said early in the video: I'm glad someone else is telling it how it is : that Scottish culture has been suppressed by "Britishness". As you said, we didn't get taught our history. All I learned about was William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and our subjugation. It was all very brief and almost glossed over. I learnt A LOT about English monarchs though. Edit: and at the end... yeah... I comment before I'm finished watching. I'm one of those people.

Wow it's funny that you were talking about Outlander because I found your videos looking for people who speak with the Scottish accent (I was in love with the accent due to Outlander) I really looove that show it's amazing!! Outlander is one of the reasons why I want to travel to Scotland! Here in Chile we've got groups about Outlander and people from other parts of the world are looking forward to travel to Scotland to see most of the places shown in the show. So is good to see that most of the people from Scotland love the show. You should read the books though. (and sorry if I made any mistake with my English, I'm learning hahaha)

I just visited Scotland for the first time. I always wanted to go but watching Outlander is what finally got me there. Spent most of the time on the Isle of Skye - stunningly beautiful.
I 've just almost finished whole series like in several days on Netflix! I am from Cracov (Poland) but I so love this history and everything you say (landscapes, actors, language, costumes, castles, all details)! AMAZING ! I highly reccomend it to all my friends because I know that they will love it. Great great job!
I LOVE Outlander! Currently re-watching it on Netflix awaiting season 3 :) I'm moving to the UK in October and I would definitely love to visit the filming locations 😄

We did a road trip in Scotland back in March & visited most of the filming locations. The best part was the great people of Scotland & how wonderful & friendly they are...We can't wait to go back.
I am a bit Scottish and Irish....and "Sassenach" as my husband calls me. He is first born in America, and his lineage goes back the Robert the Bruce. He plays for the Cameron Highlanders as a drummer and has for many years. His father played the pipes at the Queen's coronation for the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. He has been to Scotland and played and we hope to go back to his roots someday. Love Scotland, feel like it is home, though I've not been yet. Love Outlander, too! Love to you! The McMillans

Hi Shaun, I'm from Quebec city Canada and my 1st ancester on my great grand mother was Hugh Fraser who became «Augustin Fraser». Outlander, made me search for my ancesters and now that I'm Prest, my bigger wish is to go visit Scotland the magnifique!!!
I also am a Fraser (my grandmother's maiden name) and when we visited Scotland we got a special tour of Fraser Castle in Aberdeenshire. Not to be confused with Beauly Castle in Inverness that is the seat of Simon Fraser, but an extension of the clan. I highly recommend it when you go!

I visited Scotland and totally fell in love with Scotland, scotts and your history. Now I'm back home and missing Scotland so I started watching this show... I am obsessed and wish Scotland never went through that violence period. I love Scotland! Can't wait till I finish school to do my working holiday there.
Nice video 😊 And about Lotte Verbeek, she is actually from the Netherlands. I must say (since I am also from the Netherlands) she does a nice job. Most Dutchies tend to have an accent, she does a nice job in hiding that. I like Outlander and started reading the books because of the show. Since I am also a History teacher it is very interesting to follow the show / read the books. Btw Verbeek is pronounced as 'Fair bake' I think that comes close enough for any nonDutchie :)

Outlander was the reason I decided to visit Scotland last year! I was so drawn in by the history and landscape. I had the most amazing crazy time, hiked 150km across the highlands, met some incredible people! I loved my time in Scotland :)
I am french, and I must say that this tv show really made me want to visit scotland. I already wanted to go to an english speaking country because i've never been but I didn't know which one. I love to visit historical places, so watching outlander really made me want to travel into the Highlands, learn more about the clans history, culloden ... I know very little about scottish history (i've briefly studied the stuarts at college) and i think it's really interesting to learn more about it to understand british and scottish relations nowadays (even more when i saw in comments that the show's releasing was pushed back because of the referendum). Sorry for the long post and for my english ^^

As an American of Scottish descent, it has sparked my fascination with the people & history of Scotland. I sincerely hope to visit there one day. :)
Outlander just added to my desire to tour Scotland. Honestly, my husband and I are considering moving there from the States. Not any time soon but sometime in the future.
I have read all the Outlander books and I have totally been fascinated by the history within the story. Diana Gabaldon does a really great job sticking to actual facts. Throughout my reading the books I constantly had to do my own research because I felt the need to know even more. The Jacobite history from Scotland is incredibly interesting.
Small point, Shaun, it was Falkland, not Falkirk that stood in for Inverness. Culross, also in Fife, has hosted a lot of the filming, and Dysart harbour near Kirkcaldy even represents the French port of Le Havre in Season 2! Several Scottish tour companies now run Outlander tours which include Doune Castle (Leoch). Incidentally, Doune also starred in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and its gift shop sells a rather palatable Holy Grail Ale! Possibly the only place on the planet that does - so worth a visit for that fact alone :) The bulk of Outlander studio work is done at Cumbernauld, including some 'Parisian' street scenes. 'French' exteriors were shot in Prague and at Hopeton House, near Edinburgh. I've worked on two of the three series shot to date and can confirm that production values are VERY high; great sets, costumes, weaponry and SFX. Outlander has brought a significant number of creative jobs to Scotland and should be celebrated for that fact alone, regardless of political viewpoint. A muted colour palette of browns, greens and greys is used for 18c Scotland, including the tartans. This is largely accurate - tartan in its original form was superb disruptive camouflage - although the Jacobite army of 1745-6 issued a uniform sett of predominantly black and red to its large contingent of lowland troops who had no clann affiliation. The muted background colours also help to distinguish principal actors in crowd scenes
Thanks for sharing a bit of history here. I am sad that not more of the history is taught in Scottish schools, but it is the same here in the states. And we only have a few hundred years of events to speak of! How awesome that you are working on the sets. I've done same for a movie in the states but for the history immersion alone, I'd love to be in the middle of your gig! :) Assuming you will continue, enjoy the adventure! :D
Just started watching the series thru Netflix and I’m hooked. Been to Edinburgh and Glasgow years ago but now I want to see Scotland again because of outlander.
Hello, American here married to an imported Scot. I watched Outlander first, now I've started over with the husband to prepare him for season 3. Be warned: Watching Outlander makes a Scot EXPONENTIALLY more Scottish. They get rowdy and yell all the Scots lines back to the tellie, whoo boy. "AWAY 'N BILE YER HEID."
Watching Outlander has inspired me to discover more of my own Scottish history. I've only just watched the series, but I took a trip to the Highlands a few years back, and watching the show has reignited that genealogical flame. I look forward to learning more about my own clan, Clan MacMillan and the history of the land of my ancestors.
Shaun, just discovered your UA-cam site. I had been wondering how Outlander was being viewed in Scotland. Very happy to hear such positive response. I've always hadan interest in Scotland and finally got to go in June and was on the trail of the filminglocations. Unbelievable country. I found it so funny that the local folk that I encounteredhad no clue when I asked for directions to Castle Doune...and that is the actual name forCastle Leoch. Blackness Castle was my favorite....the ship that never sailed.....whereJamie was flogged by Black Jack Randall ....played by the awesome Tobias Menzies who, as I'm sure you know, is English but Menzies is a Scottish name and we visited CastleMenzies in Weem next to Aberfeldy. It is a "working" castle and quite fascinating.My ancestors came from Ireland to America via Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.One great grandmother X 3 was my connection to Scotland. It's interesting to hear you saying that the history of clearing of the Highlands and the clans was not really taught in school. I am a Canadian and between being a student through the 90's and now a teacher, there's been a lot added to our history curriculum since I was a student about our First Nations (Indigenous) peoples, particularly how they were mistreated by the colonizing British/French forces. I was fascinated watching Outlander (done both seasons and read up to end of book 3) to see how the British did a lot of similar colonizing/destruction of culture things to the Scottish (and Irish) people that we here in Canada associate with the doing to the First Nations. The prohibition against traditional dress, the non-support of the language, the shuffling of people from their traditional lands (here onto reserves to make way for farms), the destruction of the governance system and completely ignoring the politics that existed... The story of Imperial England saying "You will be like us and do as we say (but always second class to English) or we will kill you" seems to repeat again and again. It is taught in Canada as so racially motivated, I was fascinated to see them do it to the Scots since the rest of the world probably couldn't tell an Englishman from a Scot until he spoke and you could peg the accent.
This process of a country with more wealth and military muscle oppressing another country, people or culture has been going on since the advent of history. Its actually going on right now with China. China invaded Tibet in 1949, and began a process of cultural genocide. Their revered leader, the Dala Lama fled to India, where he still resides. The Chinese then began a systemic persecution of Tibetan Buddhists, which defines the country's culture. This was a country where one quarter of the population was in monasteries, which were the size of small towns. The brutal treatment , the tortures, the atrocities committed by the Chinese greatly reduced these huge centers. Many monks and nuns fled to India or the West. Chinese migrants have supplanted the. indigenous people of Tibet, and now greatly outnumber them. Presently the Chinese have untold numbers of muslim Uighers in re-education camps, which are really concentration camps. Their culture is under government assault. Sorry to ramble on here. But everyone is talking about history as if it stopped at a point. History was what happened 5 minutes ago. Many people don't care much for history, which is why many don't know it. If you really want to know history you will have to do your homework and read up on it yourself. I've done that since grade school. Thank you.
There have been many meetings between delegations of First Nations and Māori both here and in Canada and America as they share many of the same experiences of colonisation. The first peoples were treated badly here in Aotearoa/ New Zealand too. I was at school 50 years ago when nothing was taught about the New Zealand wars, most whites grew up thinking we'd done Māori a favour by colonising New Zealand and it was common for Māori kids to be beaten just for speaking te reo at school, luckily the colonisers didn't get their way and not only did the language survive, there has been a massive rebirth of culture and language and it is even being embraced by Pākeha aka white New Zealanders. (BTW The beatings weren't confined to Māori, everybody was regularly beaten until corporal punishment was banned in 1990.) There has been a lot of reparations made via the Treaty of Waitangi settlements for the land that was stolen and the breaches of the treaty by the Crown but, there is still more to be done to make amends although, a lot of us are becoming more aware of what was done and the negative impact it had and still has in some cases on Māori. If you're interested in the history, this is a very good series on the New Zealand wars that has been recreated pretty accurately and shows off both some amazing aspects of Māori culture and the stunningly beautiful country that is Aotearoa. 😁 www.rnz.co.nz/nzwars

My favorite Scottish film is unquestionably the legendary Local Hero (1983), by the even more legendary Bill Forsythe. You have the most beautiful scenery in the history of any film anywhere and that movie is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. P.S. A VERY close second would be Rob Roy.
Shaun...I've read all the books. Started way back in 1999 with the first book. Last summer I watched all of the shows (can't wait for season 3 to come out!). While I didn't go to the filming spots, I did head over to Scotland last spring. IN LOVE! Gonna have to go back!
I hated not being able to learn about Scottish history or learn to speak Gaelic. Since leaving school (all them years ago) hopefully with Robert the Bruce film getting made. It will push fellow Scots to learn more. Stop being put down. As that's only history I was tought.
Tally R, I agree with you. I have family in England who are teachers. One a history teacher. They do not teach the real stuff. The things the British and the English should be proud of. Only the negative shameful things are taught. No one in England learns about the British Empire anymore, apparently because of the whole colonialism thing. But so much good came from that period, as well as bad. When the kids from 10 different countries across the world sit in a classroom together in England and no one ever teaches them why they are there, it's just sad.
Scotland (Highlands) has always been my dream vacation. I've read the "Outlander" series many, many times and live in the same area as Diana Gabaldon in Arizona. Go Scotland! Y'all rock with your history and the beauty of the country (and the Scottish accent is my favorite).
I'm Scottish and love the series and books! I've been following the Outlander saga since just after the Scottish referendum. It was enlightening to learn so much about our history that I didn't know! After a few episodes (which I watched on Amazon prime) I started on the books.. which are incredible! Diana Gabaldon has done an amazing job on the books and I've read all 8 about 5 times so far lol The series is amazing and it has translated to tv beautifully. I just want to warn anyone watching for the first time.. the final 2 episodes of the first season were the hardest to watch visually. So if you are likely to be triggered by rape scenes please don't watch. However they are actually very important to the story and if you choose not to watch it I recommend you read the first book.. so you understand what happens and why the character behaves as they do going forward in future episodes. I am so excited for the 3rd season to begin airing in September! 💙💚💛

We were taught about the clans in primary school in the 80's/90'sWe have a local guy who you would go to his house he taught you clans His sister could also recite Tam OShanter from memory. Here in the South West the most ignored part of Scotland We were brought up being taught Scots country dance, more Burns than you could shake a stick at and Scots history.
Lots of Yanks love Scottish history because much of the early American settlers were Scots. Because the environment of the early colonies was so different from Scotland a lot of the culture was lost here as well. Also, since the States is such a young country we don't really have much of a national identity; Yanks often cling to old immigrant roots to feed that need (e.g. Irish, Scottish, Mexican, African, etc.). That's great Scots enjoy the series. As an American I have always wanted to travel to Scotland, this series has only intensified that desire.
Very true. Often when we Americans feel lost, we turn to our roots as an anchor. I did, in the early 1990s, and started learning as much as I could about Scotland, going so far as to try to learn Gaelic. So many records lost in the Clearances, it makes research difficult. Similar losses of documentation about my Cherokee and Prussian ancestors are frustrating.
Absolutely true. I am an American and I have family from Scotland and we are obsessed with our Scottish heritage. In my small city we have three Scottish festivals and several Scottish import stores where we can buy tartan and clan trinkets. We definitely cling to our Scottish link because here in the US, we don't have much in the way of history or tradition. I've always wondered what Scottish people would think about our co-opting of their culture and whether they are as interested in the history of the clans/traditions/history/subjugation by the British/etc as we are.
It's very similar here in Australia. Many families have direct and very close roots from Scotland due ancestors being sent here for crimes. We're a very displaced nation with a lot of the more established families (who aren't native to the country of course) coming here from Scotland, Ireland and England. I don't see it as 'co-opting' Scottish culture. I see it as honouring my family and forebears. This country is so vastly different to anything that most people had experienced before being sent here, so clinging to history and memories became extremely important to them. There's still a fairly decent amount of emigration between the two areas and I feel pretty confident that we'll always maintain a close familial relationship so it doesn't feel odd that we have Scottish festivals regularly and mention our heritage with pride. After all, we're supposed to be a nation of criminals and reprobates. Of course we're going to be proud for being a bit weird *chuckle*.
Interesting - thanks so much for sharing. I've always wondered how the history of Transportation has impacted modern Australia. At least where I live, the link to Scotland is much more tenuous - most people have, like, a single Scottish ancestor 5 generations back. But I've found, almost without exception, that people tend to celebrate that Scottish link and ignore the other parts of their genetic history. I wonder what makes Scottish culture so appealing over other cultures to people here?
Kristine Lofgren+ My mother-in-law is Scottish. She's 80 and grew up in Bannockburn in Scotland. As you may know (I hope anyway :) ) Bannockburn was the site of a major Scottish victory against the English. She is immensely proud of her heritage, knows all of the tartans and was the highland dancing champion of Scotland from the age of 8. Her family emigrated to Australia when she was 14. She was the youngest. I love speaking to her about her life in Scotland. It seems so rich in tradition and colour, if not in wealth. I'm fifth generation Australian but I'm pure Irish on both sides of the family - a fairly common thing from my generation. It had a lot to do with religion of course. I feel a love and kinship for Scotland due to our shared Celtic history and terrible treatment by the English. My MIL told me that schools didn't teach Scottish history to try to stamp out Scottish pride and individualism. Just as they banned the Celtic and Welsh languages. But her family taught her and as she toured all around Scotland dancing she knows a lot about Scotland. She even danced for the Queen Mum, who she adored, and the Queen, who she wasn't impressed with :))). I think her greatest sadness is that she never returned to Scotland as she's terrified of flying and she is now the only one left out of a family of six. She has read all of the Diana Gabaldon books many times over and she said they are the only books that really make her feel like she's back home.
I LOVE Outlander - I'm Canadian. I started reading the books back in 1991 when Diana first published and have been HOOKED! I think the series is spectacular as well. I have had a great desire to see Scotland since I was 12 - that's almost 50 years now but it has not been possible...yet. Because of this, Shaun, I'm amazed to hear you say that many Scottish people don't know very much about their own history or had much interest until now. You have such a beautiful country. Someday, I'll be seeing it with my own eyes! P.S. It makes me so happy to hear you say that you and other Scottish people are enjoying the series and makes it that much more real to me :)
I am an American (heritage half Scottish, half Irish with a wee bit of Allemanisch German in there). Americans can be obsessed with our Revolutionary War. Here's an odd question. In recent decades, it has been observed by historians and pundits that in each war, the generals are actually fighting the previous war. Lessons learned were from the previous war, so naturally the generals try to apply those lessons learned even when the very nature of the war has changed. A new war breaks out, so we apply the lessons that we learned the last time around, even when they do not apply. The Jacobite Uprising and the Battle of Culloden were in 1746, three decades before the USA Revolutionary War. When the colonists rose up, perhaps much as the Scots had done, wasn't that seen as the same thing as with the Scots? And had to be dealt with much as it had been dealt with with the Scots? IOW, could we blame much of the British response to the 13 Colonies on how Culloden had taught them to deal with such a situation?
My wife has Scottish ancestry and is obsessed with Outlander. This show has given her another reason to visit Scotland. We're looking forward to this mess with the current situation to be over with so we can travel out and about. Great content 🙌🏾 by the way 👌🏾
I live in Zurich, Switzerland. Everytime I see my town in a movie (Jason Bourne series for example) I realize its Prague not Zurich. But I understand that because its impossible to film here, just the traffic logistic would be a nightmare. So to all who complain about locations.. its a bloddy series. If you dont understand that, read tzhe books and stop watching. Its just a detail and doesnt matter that much. Especialy when you think about that our cities doesnt look like they did 200 years ago :-)
I agree with you. I lived in Germany for 7 years and have seen a good part of it. But the cities and towns bear little resemblance to hoe they appeared before the war. Yes, when the Germans put themselves to it, they can do amazing reconstruction work. Look what they've done to the historic reconstruction in Dresden. Other examples are not up to snuff, like Nuremberg. Which was an amazingly preserved Medieval city before the war. In fact look up how most of the major cities in Europe looked before the war. The incredible loss of so much history and beauty will make one weep.
I am Brazilian and I visited Scotland a few years ago and I just fell madly in love with it. Outlander caught my attention first because the story was in Scotland. I watched the first season on Netflix and I went mad about it. Then I went to the books and never stopped. I have read the nine books, but I keep reading them again as the seasons come on the show. Though all the three seasons are great, season one still remains my first love...
the one thing am pissed about is the fact the during the independence referendum David Cameron told the broadcaster not to air it during the referendum cause it may cause he feared that it would spark the yes vote in 2014
Cameron was in no position to "tell" anyone anything. Sony certainly thought he was going to "ask", but but there is no smoking gun that confirms he did. Also, when messing around with the fate of nations, people shouldn't really be swayed by a TV series. It's being shown now, and it can feed into any movement towards a second referendum.
yup and the probability that we will win is 75-85% in my personal opinion and if EU nationals that have stayed in scotland more than 3 years then that goes up even higher

I got very little Scottish history at school but got plenty English, even got punished for using Scottish slang instead of proper English, that was in 1966-1976.

Very interesting viewpoints! I must say that I was quite surprised to hear that Scottish history is apparently somewhat neglected in your educational system. Scottish history is (at least when I was in school...) covered fairly extensively in the schools on this side of the pond. That may be due to the influence of the many millions of Americans who are of Scottish ancestry, some families going back 250 years or more since they came here. We really admire Scotland and the Scots for their enduring dedication to freedom and liberty, values brought here that helped shape the history of America in a major way. I'm glad the reaction to Outlander is mostly positive; its always a potential minefield when you attempt to portray someone else's history, unless you do extensive research into the subject. Apparently the writers of Outlander took the time to do so.

I could be wrong (and please correct me if I am), but wasn't it illegal to teach Scottish history (particularly Highland history) in schools in Scotland until recent years? I don't remember where I got that information (I think maybe my gram told me, as she was herself a Scotswoman), but I do remember hearing something about it. Something about that being one of the terms the English brought down after the clans were broken apart.

I'm a huge fan of Outlander and just returned from a trip to Scotland in which I visited as many film sites as I could. None disappointed and Scotland as a whole didn't either. I've never felt so at home in a place. I want to move there now! I strongly encourage everyone to travel to Scotland if they get the chance!

I live in the U.S. and I'm part Scottish and Irish when I first saw the last episode in season 2. I fell in love this show make me feel very proud of my Scottish blood line. And I'm try to find it on T.V. ; when it come on T.V. I miss it.
If you have cable TV, you can actually watch all the episodes out (From Season 1 episode 1 to current) on Starz. There's an app you can get on Google Play or in the Apple store. Sign up for an account through your cable provider (even if you have Direct TV or Dish). Once you have it, download the app and sign in using your cable account. I remember being taught Scottish History at primary school and high school, not so much about Scottish clans and who they where and what purpose they had, but I still remember learning Scottish History, and some stuff about Jacobites, I remember having to design my own tartan and what Jacobite clans we would be.

Frankly, some Americans are pretty perplexed that Britain is still a monarchy and that the whole of Ireland and Scotland are not independent nations. Most of us, do understand how Britain dominated the rest of the world. To us the Scots are similar to the Native Americans who were conquered and subjugated. I am very mixed with some Scot ancestry. Live near Seattle, Washington where the yearly gathering is always well attended. Highland games are enjoyed here as well. Related to Gordon clan and have no knowledge of their political history . A friend tells me not to go to the wrong beer tent.

I am Scottish and absolutely love the series! I've actually became more interested in our history and discovered historic places I've never heard of before through the series from visiting the filming locations! Definitely recommend Doune castle, Midhope castle (lallybroch) and Falkland (portrayed as Inverness).

It depends from school to school but no, we don't get taught much about Scottish history. I got a little about Jacobites but I remember thinking "what are Jacobites??" :P My dad and grandad got no Scottish history and we certainly don't (in my experience) get any lessons on clans which completely obscures anything we do get taught. I think it stems back from a silencing of Scottish history, believing that it breeds nationalism. Not sure. Certainly, the teachers here have a little bit more freedom with lessons because there is no fixed curriculum for what needs to be covered. I guess if the teachers don't know anything about clans they aren't likely to teach it? Again, not sure!

I am multiracial with heritage of Native American, German, and African American. I love the show and I have developed a sincere respect for the Scottish culture and history. The beautiful scenery is amazing. Hope to see Scotland for myself one day, so I can experience the air, the beautiful Scottish people and the land the clans fought for. I hope the Scottish schools seek to teach more of the history to its youth so the young people can have awareness and deeper pride in your country's flag. God Bless.

They were all given lessons by a Gaelic teacher. They were taught Gaelic and put a lot into it.

I am an Outlander lover. Went to Scotland and visited the highlands, but missed most of the film sights. Made it to Culloden and took a picture with the Frazer headstone. Glad that tourism has increased. Hope to return again and see more of the West side of the Country. SO BEAUTIFUL.
Hi, glad to see Outlander finally making its presence felt among Scottish audiences. I'm a Scot, living in Glasgow. I first found the TV show, back in 2014 before it was released here, (yes tut tut I watched it online, blah blah whatever).
The entirety of Season 1 was filmed in Scotland, either on location or at the Cumbernauld studios, which Tall Ships Productions have put a lot of money into.
The second season was mainly filmed in Scotland, with a little bit in Prague (standing in for 18th century Paris) and some in England.
The third season, again a bit in Scotland, but as it's based on the 3rd book called "Voyager" which mainly takes place on ships, the existing "Black Sails" sets in South Africa were used.
Season 4, which is set mainly in North Carolina, is still going to be filmed in Scotland, both at the studios in Cumbernauld and on locations around Scotland standing in for the mountains of North Carolina (at least that's the current plan).
For the most part, I couldn't care less about the odd accent being a bit off, as long as the acting and story is interesting. Also, like everyone else, I've learned more about Scottish history from this show and these books than I ever did at school, which is pretty sad really.

Strange thing was that the series was originally supposed to air on Channel 4 back in 2015.
Then the independance referendum happened and the series was pulled, possably due to political reasons as it was feared buy some that it would influence the vote.
Well, not quite. The email from an internal Sony person says: "Your meeting with Prime Minister Cameron will likely focus on our overall investment in the U.K. - with special emphasis on the importance of Outlander (particularly as Scotland contemplates detachment this Fall)" - but there is no report on what they *actually* talked about, so we know that Sony thought that Cameron might bring the topic up, but we don't know for sure whether he did.

I live in the Highlands, the kids are taught Scottish history, we regularly get schoolkids round the museum where I work, I am involved in our teaching programme, we cover Jacobites, the Battle of Inverlochy, WW2 In Fort William, castles and vikings

The fact that y'all are not taught Scottish history blows my mind. The funny thing is that the historic romance genre (which Outlander does not neatly fit) has been obsessed with Scotland and Scottish history for decades. Your average well read romance reader knows loads about the clans and Scottish culture! Personally, I have read at least 50 novels that explore historic Scotland.

Teresa B yes you're exactly right. I'm half Scottish and went to school there and in Texas. Native American history isn't taught, nor anything about the different tribes. That's why it wasn't taught in Scotland either. They didn't want to risk any more rebellions I guess.
Who knows why the Scots decided not to teach much of their own history - it's very odd. The Scottish education system is entirely separate from that in the rest of the UK, and has been so since it was created. It should be taught more, so that some of the myths can be set aside. For example, most people don't know that large amounts of the government ("British") forces were made up of Scots, and that the lowland Scots who were strongly Presbyterian and had fought wars to maintain the Presbyterian religion were ant-Jacobite because they were led and supported by Catholics. It's all rather complicated.
Obviously take the historical romance version of history with a pinch of salt. To be honest a lot of Scottish history gaps in their education system is the fault of English. We pretty much went in there to stop an uprising and massacred them followed by outlawing most of the highlander heritage including Gaelic. I'm English and had to admit we have some pretty horrific violent and dark moments in history.
I'm not going to lie. I was shocked that Scotland did not vote for independence during the referendum. That Cameron blocked the show explains a lot. The British forces were pretty evil and the disbanding of the clans - a crime against humanity.
Yes - the atrocities against the Jacobites after Culloden were appalling, and the 60 years of suppression of highland culture thereafter was not a shining moment for British democracy and tolerance! But civil wars (and the '45 was a civil war within Britain, and within Scotland itself) are usually nasty things.
More Scottish people are now seeing thro' the SNP, their policies and impossible promises, we entered into a union 300+ years ago when Scotland was bankrupt and during that time Scotland has prospered irrespective of what people say. SNP supporters have this mindset that we are still 'ruled' by England but seem to conveniently forget that anyone born in either Wales, England or Scotland can go onto lead the UK as Prime Minister. As far as Independence goes the SNP would just hand back control of Scotland to the un-elected EU officials and when they say jump...SNP would have to say 'How High'....far better as part of the UK (even with the current issues) than being a tadpole country in the EU with no real say in how we are run.

When you say we entered into a Union .you neglect to mention the majority of Scots were against this Union.. the nobles of Scotland were actually bribed into the Union as the English Monarchy knew we were struggling from the failed Dorian scheme in Panama and decided to ban trade between the two nations to further our troubles intentionally,,, thus the nobles and land owners would have seen no choice but to bend the knee ans sell us out..... the Scottish people had no say on the matter,, no vote, and in places riots occured and martial law was declared.... you say we entered the Union as if the Scottish people celebrated this .......................
No matter what happened at the time of the Acts of Union, the fact was that Scotland as an independent kingdom chose to pursue an empire and failed on multiple accounts to the point of being ruined. Don't forget that there was/is a significant national identity disparity between lowland Scots and highlanders, the highlanders being organised into clans were of course more prone to rebel and fuel themselves on nationalism.
However, England offered a return to financial prosperity and access to all of her trading routes around the world if Scotland United to form Great Britain and shared in building the British empire. Also don't forget that democracy wasn't the standard, England had been exceptional in that it was relatively democratic for its time. I don't think it's fair to judge England's corruption or her parliament's actions based on modern democratic values. Think of France where the king's word was law, or Russia where a foreign wife was allowed to kill off her husband, the tsar, and take his throne herself.
I don't see the English bribing Scottish lords as particularly out of line for the time period, God knows it went the other way around too (just look up the string of corrupt regents throughout the Stuart monarchy in Scotland) Looking back, we may have a romanticised view of the Scottish as a whole being oppressed, but many Scots chose of their own free will to sell the kingdom out and I don't think there was any sort of unity among the people that would suggest they were collectively victims and that their desperation was completely the fault of the English. Probably the worst of the traitors lived during the "Mary Queen of Scots very messy time"
Once you read about that, the modern world is basically a democratic paradise... Truthfully the world was and always has been a messy place, the scots enjoy liberties now so I don't see any of this as a good cause to split up the union.
And btw--the EU isn't "un-elected" for the one person who said that woefully misguided comment. It's more representative than the UK's shitty FPTP bullshit, you'd know if you'd ever bothered to research and vote in MEP direct elections but you probably haven't, choosing to sit by and complain as the easier pathway.
Ive just discovered and binge watched both seasons, I'm from the US and my interest in my own Scottish heritage has definatly peaked. A trip is definatly in the works!
Here in South America we love Outlander too! I'm from Brazil and there are quite a lot of people of people here who enjoy the show. I've never heard much about Scotland before, and I simply feel in love with it at first sight, such a beautiful place, very rich culture. The show is just AMAZING. Not just for the love story but because of the history of Scotland itself! Many people like me are now aware of some Scotland history because of the show❤
Shaun, I would just like to highlight that, yes, many things of the series / novels are not historically accurate (i.e. Burning witches was a practice no more at the 18th century) but as the author tells on the prologue of the books, at the end what she's writing is still a fictional story and sometimes it's hard to make it matches the historical facts by 100% in case she wants some fluidity on the novels. Yet, I do think she did a marvellous job and did her best to keep it as much accurate as she could. The novels are extremely well detailed (and long! About 1000 pages each!) and it's deffo worthy a try for those who are interested in Scotland history.

I'm sitting here reading comments from people and it's amazing that Scottish history is reborn and being taught again and that something like this can connect people from all over the world together. One inaccuracy you might be speaking on regarding the boots. Jamie wears French Military boots. He served with a French unit. When we first meet Jamie, he was being picked up from returning from France. As for the other Highlanders foot wear I cannot speak on.

So after about a hour he says iam a actor ok cool i said what have you been in he says he currently stars in outlander ? which i havent seen before but ive heard of it i know its on amazon prime. Quite a few people knew him ?? he says he lives in hillhead and scottish name is Mark Smith ? i met up with his gf later on had a good night etc but for the love of me i cant find him anywhere on google or outlander cast ?? Shaun. I was glad to hear you share the lack of Scottish history offered to children, & adults in Scotland, until fairly recent. I'm a US citizen, born & raised Pacific Coast. My maternal grandfather's line came to American colonies in 1700's from Scotland via Ulster. So, our family has interest in Scottish, Irish, etc history. I married a Scotsman (fresh off the boat, I mean airtravel) from Scotland. At first I was surprised at how little he knew of his own countries history (I knew more than He), until I began researching the subject of Scottish education. Yes, finally Sct history is being taught in Sct & with all the research interest, books & Outlander series, a bit of Scottish history will be known to the world. Thanks for your videos.
Sad that the history of Scotland and the Scottish people and clans has been supressed or swept under the carpet for so long. I know many say that it is ancient history - yet it isnt that old , when you look at the last episode of Season 1 and you go to the memorial at Culloden afterward and understand the MAGNITUDE of 10 000 Bristish soldiers , mostly well fed and armed against a near starving poorly army of 3000 Highlanders armed with mostly hand to hand combat weapons you see how BARBARIC and yes it needs capitals - that battle was, it was a slaughter of a nation sadly. Also the episode with Black Jack and Jamie at the prison, its a story that most people dont want to acknowledge but it was then and is NOW a "fact" of war , that kind of sexual violence happened and just because it is ugly doesn't make it less tragic or necessary to be acknowledged. I ADORE Scotland , and tracing my own family roots ( Maiden name is SCOTT) has taken me down a crazy path too. Been to Scotland a good few times , was last there in June
Cullodden would have been less of a disaster if Prince Chas had actually LISTENED to his advisors, particularly in relation of the location of his cannons, sadly he was not a particularly effective leader, there was also tension between Irish and Scots Jacobites, both felt there was one Jacobite too many, and on the march back from Derby there was considerable desertion, as men returned to their farms and crofts. The Govt. troops were well armed and fed due to the efficiency of "Butcher Billy" who may not have been a particularly sympathetic character, but was a good administrator. History is generally told by the victors.

As an educator in Portland, Oregon, USA, I was saddened to hear that you didn't learn much about Scottish History in school, but very proud that an American did her research and presented so much of it in her stories. My husband and I also work in the film industry and appreciate the fine detail Moore and crew (including and especially his wife, costume designer Terri Dresbach) have brought to the small screen. I highly recommend looking up their back-story, including how she did NOT want to design this show! It's too much to tell here, but romantic and fascinating. Also interesting research is how Gab-AL-don (correct pronunciation) came to write the first book. I have recommended to many friends binge-watching the two seasons and several of them have commented that the rape and pillaging is just too difficult to watch and that "bodice-rippers" aren't usually their 'thing'. The beauty of watching a recording is that you can fast forward through those scenes and still get the concept of what's happening without losing important story lines. When people say they've found it trite, I feel sorry that they just didn't get it. Starz is bringing their 'A' game with this series and I thank them for it, knowing how challenging filming an accurately depicted story can be. Do they make a few mistakes, like inappropriate casting, yes, can a viewer overlook occasional blunders, yes. Most of it is criticism born of reading the novels. I am on #6 in the series of 9 original stories now and have to rewatch seasons 1 & 2 before season 3 premieres on Sept 10 or I will just be very confused :oP Good luck getting in to it all! It is a trip.

I actually just started watching this series and didn't have a clue what it would be about. But I am very pleasantly surprised and loving it. It's made me get back into contact with my family in Ellon/Cruden Bay areas. I have never heard the stories from my families in that part of the world and am looking forward to learning about my ancestors history.

Scottish person here. I watched the first season and I enjoyed it. Bumped into this video by accident and it's made me want to watch some more. It's definitely an eye opener in terms of some of our history. Yes, I am one of those who was taught no real Scottish history in school. I asked about that and seem to remember being told I was being "parochial". You've made me wonder what other country in the world discourages it's citizens from knowing their past. Anyway, bad Scottish accents don't bother me....they are trying their best. You should hear my French accent.

The US pretty much gives only a quick brush by of native Americans. You maybe get a chapter or so about how they applied to mainly the English. No details into their cultures or anything.
My ancestors from Ukraine were oppressed by Stalin. They fled to survive. My baba forced into an arranged marriage. Their daughter my mom was beat at school for speaking Ukrainian. They were forced to assimilate.
As for my fathers not so completely French side my grandmere was Irish/French. She denied it her whole life. Came from Dublin.
My family and I recently traveled to Scotland, never having read nor watched Outlander. Regardless of that, I found the country absolutely fascinating! I loved the rich countryside, the culture, and the history. The loss of life on Culloden Moor weighed really heavy with me and when I returned to the states, I found myself researching the event to learn more. Since returning, I have now become an Outlander fan. As a previous commentator mentioned, you are definitely in for a tumultuous ride. Enjoy!

Ive only been a couple of times, and it was to visit family so sticking to the west coast, but I'll never forget the first time driving into Scotland and going through the hills, with fog flowing over them, the colours, it was like a film! I recently watched Outlander and absolutely fell head over heels in love with it, the Scottish history and the highlands. I'm so fascinated by the clans, the relationship with occupying British army and just life in Scotland 200 years ago. As a European I wish I knew more about your beautiful country. It's amazing to hear what watching Outlander is like for a Scottish person and realising how many things and attention to details they got right.
My parents and I watched Outlander and it inspired us to add Scotland to our European trip this pass Spring (we are American). We were not disappointed, it was not only beautiful, it turned out to be the favorite part of the trip for my parents. My stepfather found out a few months before we left that half of his family was from Scotland, actually near Inverness so he was really touched seeing where his ancestors came from. We can't wait to go back again, my stepfather is planning future golf trips there.

I love Outlander. One of the main things I noticed in the first season was how Scotland itself is a character in the story. The land has its own story, its own personality. You could probably write a whole novel where the mountains and the lochs and the forests, etc. are characters reporting what goes on around them throughout history.
I am watching this in 2020, so OUTLANDER is 6 years old. I am American and an a Outlander Addict. I have watched it dozens of times through all 5 seasons and am rereading the books for the third time. I am in several Outlander fan groups on Facebook, follow the cast and book author on Instagram and/or Twitter, and catch every TV appearance I possibly can. It is the best ever series. I got the courage to take a trip to Scotland, but it was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID. I am rescheduled for 2021, and I'll get there one day if I live long enough. I even want to buy a home there and live in Scotland part-time. I am in love with all things Scottish. Yes, Sam Heughan is gorgeous and Scottish although he has a different accent than Richard Rankin, whom I also love. Sam has an English mother and comes from some place I can't pronounce around Dumfries and Galloway. He has to change his accent for the series since he has a bit of a different accent, but do does Graham McTavish, who sounds more like Sam accent wise. Richard Rankin has a very deep Scottish accent that is a times hard to understand, but he is from a different part of Scotland. Every woman is in love with Sam Heughan. We call him The King of Men. I know they use different locations, but it doesn't bother me. It's because of weather and the difficulty of moving horses and other effects around. The producers explain their reasonings at the end of the episode and in interviews. Some episodes are filmed in South Africa (apparently you haven't gotten to that season). I love the history. I knew about the Jacobite Rebellion. I ran across it while doing some ancestry work several years ago. I found it fascinating and read quite a lot about it. Having knowledge of the rebellion only made the show more real. The show is so perfectly acted that it's very common in group discussions for people to actually leave reality and find themselves inside the show...like it's something we are watching in reality. Now that is excellent acting. The books are different from the show, but it is all perfect and very entertaining. It's filled with undying love and devotion, horror, war, history, beautiful scenery, mystery, difficult choices, sadness, joy, and yes, it's fiction. But it is so well written, directed, produced and perfectly acted I don't care about boots being out of place or where they filmed. I just want to the story to continue. Americans love this show and since there are people joining Facebook groups from all over the world, it is popular in many countries. The show is American produced by Sony pictures and airs on Starz network. I watch as many interviews as I can find. The reasons for altering book storylines and not using actual locations are all explained. They film 10 months of the year for 12 episodes so the weather influences choices and moving crew and production, animals and such and that affects everything. The producers often mention the rugged terrain and cold, rainy weather as reasons for making changes. The fact that some Scots don't like the series is almost sickening. It's a fantasy series. I should think Scots would be happy to have a Scottish show become one of the most popular series ever. I love your vlogs, and this one is old, but it bugs me that Scots criticize a Scottish-based show. We had a show called TURN about the American Revolution. It ran about 3 or 4 years. My husband and I loved it, but Americans failed to get heavily invested in the show and it was cancelled. Some people just don't enjoy history and prefer dumb reality shows about marrying a stranger or living in a house full of strangers, trying to undermine each other to win a million dollars. Nobody is foolish enough to think TURN was perfectly aligned with what actually happened in the 1700s...I mean all we have to go by is what was recorded in history, and it darn sure wasn't filmed in the actual locations but on a Hollywood set. At least Outlander is filmed, for the most part, in Scotland. Be proud, not critical.

I'm glad someone else is telling it how it is : that Scottish culture has been suppressed by "Britishness". As you said, we didn't get taught our history. All I learned about was William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and our subjugation. It was all very brief and almost glossed over. I learnt A LOT about English monarchs though.
Edit: and at the end... yeah... I comment before I'm finished watching. I'm one of those people.
I'm an American and I think that because of the British suppression it would drive Scottish people to learn more about their own history and heritage.

Wow it's funny that you were talking about Outlander because I found your videos looking for people who speak with the Scottish accent (I was in love with the accent due to Outlander) I really looove that show it's amazing!! Outlander is one of the reasons why I want to travel to Scotland! Here in Chile we've got groups about Outlander and people from other parts of the world are looking forward to travel to Scotland to see most of the places shown in the show. So is good to see that most of the people from Scotland love the show. You should read the books though. (and sorry if I made any mistake with my English, I'm learning hahaha)

I just visited Scotland for the first time. I always wanted to go but watching Outlander is what finally got me there. Spent most of the time on the Isle of Skye - stunningly beautiful.
The Inverness of the past would be smaller than it is now that's why they didn't film there.

We did a road trip in Scotland back in March & visited most of the filming locations. The best part was the great people of Scotland & how wonderful & friendly they are...We can't wait to go back.
I am a bit Scottish and Irish....and "Sassenach" as my husband calls me. He is first born in America, and his lineage goes back the Robert the Bruce. He plays for the Cameron Highlanders as a drummer and has for many years. His father played the pipes at the Queen's coronation for the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. I also am a Fraser (my grandmother's maiden name) and when we visited Scotland we got a special tour of Fraser Castle in Aberdeenshire. Not to be confused with Beauly Castle in Inverness that is the seat of Simon Fraser, but an extension of the clan. I highly recommend it when you go!

I visited Scotland and totally fell in love with Scotland, scotts and your history. Now I'm back home and missing Scotland so I started watching this show... I am obsessed and wish Scotland never went through that violence period. I love Scotland! Can't wait till I finish school to do my working holiday there.

Most Dutchies tend to have an accent, she does a nice job in hiding that. I like Outlander and started reading the books because of the show. Since I am also a History teacher it is very interesting to follow the show / read the books. Btw Verbeek is pronounced as 'Fair bake' I think that comes close enough for any nonDutchie :)

Outlander was the reason I decided to visit Scotland last year! I was so drawn in by the history and landscape. I had the most amazing crazy time, hiked 150km across the highlands, met some incredible people! I loved my time in Scotland :)
I am french, and I must say that this tv show really made me want to visit scotland. I already wanted to go to an english speaking country because i've never been but I didn't know which one. I love to visit historical places, so watching outlander really made me want to travel into the Highlands, learn more about the clans history, culloden ... I know very little about scottish history (i've briefly studied the stuarts at college) and i think it's really interesting to learn more about it to understand british and scottish relations nowadays (even more when i saw in comments that the show's releasing was pushed back because of the referendum). Sorry for the long post and for my english ^^

Outlander just added to my desire to tour Scotland. Honestly, my husband and I are considering moving there from the States. Not any time soon but sometime in the future.
I have read all the Outlander books and I have totally been fascinated by the history within the story. Diana Gabaldon does a really great job sticking to actual facts. Throughout my reading the books I constantly had to do my own research because I felt the need to know even more. The Jacobite history from Scotland is incredibly interesting.
Small point, Shaun, it was Falkland, not Falkirk that stood in for Inverness. Culross, also in Fife, has hosted a lot of the filming, and Dysart harbour near Kirkcaldy even represents the French port of Le Havre in Season 2! Several Scottish tour companies now run Outlander tours which include Doune Castle (Leoch). Incidentally, Doune also starred in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and its gift shop sells a rather palatable Holy Grail Ale! Possibly the only place on the planet that does - so worth a visit for that fact alone :) The bulk of Outlander studio work is done at Cumbernauld, including some 'Parisian' street scenes. 'French' exteriors were shot in Prague and at Hopeton House, near Edinburgh. I've worked on two of the three series shot to date and can confirm that production values are VERY high; great sets, costumes, weaponry and SFX. Outlander has brought a significant number of creative jobs to Scotland and should be celebrated for that fact alone, regardless of political viewpoint. A muted colour palette of browns, greens and greys is used for 18c Scotland, including the tartans. This is largely accurate - tartan in its original form was superb disruptive camouflage - although the Jacobite army of 1745-6 issued a uniform sett of predominantly black and red to its large contingent of lowland troops who had no clann affiliation. The muted background colours also help to distinguish principal actors in crowd scenes
Thanks for sharing a bit of history here. I am sad that not more of the history is taught in Scottish schools, but it is the same here in the states. And we only have a few hundred years of events to speak of! How awesome that you are working on the sets. Watching Outlander has inspired me to discover more of my own Scottish history. I've only just watched the series, but I took a trip to the Highlands a few years back, and watching the show has reignited that genealogical flame. I look forward to learning more about my own clan, Clan MacMillan and the history of the land of my ancestors.

I've always hadan interest in Scotland and finally got to go in June and was on the trail of the filminglocations. Unbelievable country. I found it so funny that the local folk that I encounteredhad no clue when I asked for directions to Castle Doune...and that is the actual name forCastle Leoch. Blackness Castle was my favorite....the ship that never sailed.....whereJamie was flogged by Black Jack Randall ....played by the awesome Tobias Menzies who, as I'm sure you know, is English but Menzies is a Scottish name and we visited CastleMenzies in Weem next to Aberfeldy. It is a "working" castle and quite fascinating.My ancestors came from Ireland to America via Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.One great grandmother X 3 was my connection to Scotland. It's interesting to hear you saying that the history of clearing of the Highlands and the clans was not really taught in school. I am a Canadian and between being a student through the 90's and now a teacher, there's been a lot added to our history curriculum since I was a student about our First Nations (Indigenous) peoples, particularly how they were mistreated by the colonizing British/French forces. I was fascinated watching Outlander (done both seasons and read up to end of book 3) to see how the British did a lot of similar colonizing/destruction of culture things to the Scottish (and Irish) people that we here in Canada associate with the doing to the First Nations. The prohibition against traditional dress, the non-support of the language, the shuffling of people from their traditional lands (here onto reserves to make way for farms), the destruction of the governance system and completely ignoring the politics that existed... The story of Imperial England saying "You will be like us and do as we say (but always second class to English) or we will kill you" seems to repeat again and again. It is taught in Canada as so racially motivated, I was fascinated to see them do it to the Scots since the rest of the world probably couldn't tell an Englishman from a Scot until he spoke and you could peg the accent.
This process of a country with more wealth and military muscle oppressing another country, people or culture has been going on since the advent of history. Its actually going on right now with China. China invaded Tibet in 1949, and began a process of cultural genocide. Their revered leader, the Dala Lama fled to India, where he still resides. The Chinese then began a systemic persecution of Tibetan Buddhists, which defines the country's culture. This was a country where one quarter of the population was in monasteries, which were the size of small towns. The brutal treatment , the tortures, the atrocities committed by the Chinese greatly reduced these huge centers. Many monks and nuns fled to India or the West. Chinese migrants have supplanted the. indigenous people of Tibet, and now greatly outnumber them. Presently the Chinese have untold numbers of muslim Uighers in re-education camps, which are really concentration camps. Their culture is under government assault. Sorry to ramble on here. But everyone is talking about history as if it stopped at a point. History was what happened 5 minutes ago. Many people don't care much for history, which is why many don't know it. If you really want to know history you will have to do your homework and read up on it yourself. I've done that since grade school. Thank you.
There have been many meetings between delegations of First Nations and Māori both here and in Canada and America as they share many of the same experiences of colonisation. The first peoples were treated badly here in Aotearoa/ New Zealand too. I was at school 50 years ago when nothing was taught about the New Zealand wars, most whites grew up thinking we'd done Māori a favour by colonising New Zealand and it was common for Māori kids to be beaten just for speaking te reo at school, luckily the colonisers didn't get their way and not only did the language survive, there has been a massive rebirth of culture and language and it is even being embraced by Pākeha aka white New Zealanders. (BTW The beatings weren't confined to Māori, everybody was regularly beaten until corporal punishment was banned in 1990.) There has been a lot of reparations made via the Treaty of Waitangi settlements for the land that was stolen and the breaches of the treaty by the Crown but, there is still more to be done to make amends although, a lot of us are becoming more aware of what was done and the negative impact it had and still has in some cases on Māori. If you're interested in the history, this is a very good series on the New Zealand wars that has been recreated pretty accurately and shows off both some amazing aspects of Māori culture and the stunningly beautiful country that is Aotearoa. 😁

My favorite Scottish film is unquestionably the legendary Local Hero (1983), by the even more legendary Bill Forsythe. You have the most beautiful scenery in the history of any film anywhere and that movie is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. P.S. A VERY close second would be Rob Roy.
Shaun...I've read all the books. Started way back in 1999 with the first book. Last summer I watched all of the shows (can't wait for season 3 to come out!). While I didn't go to the filming spots, I did head over to Scotland last spring. IN LOVE! Gonna have to go back!
I hated not being able to learn about Scottish history or learn to speak Gaelic. Since leaving school (all them years ago) hopefully with Robert the Bruce film getting made. It will push fellow Scots to learn more. Stop being put down. As that's only history I was tought.

No one in England learns about the British Empire anymore, apparently because of the whole colonialism thing. But so much good came from that period, as well as bad.
When the kids from 10 different countries across the world sit in a classroom together in England and no one ever teaches them why they are there, it's just sad.
Scotland (Highlands) has always been my dream vacation. I've read the "Outlander" series many, many times and live in the same area as Diana Gabaldon in Arizona. Go Scotland! Y'all rock with your history and the beauty of the country (and the Scottish accent is my favorite).
I'm Scottish and love the series and books! I've been following the Outlander saga since just after the Scottish referendum. It was enlightening to learn so much about our history that I didn't know! After a few episodes (which I watched on Amazon prime) I started on the books.. which are incredible! Diana Gabaldon has done an amazing job on the books and I've read all 8 about 5 times so far lol The series is amazing and it has translated to tv beautifully. I just want to warn anyone watching for the first time.. the final 2 episodes of the first season were the hardest to watch visually. So if you are likely to be triggered by rape scenes please don't watch. However they are actually very important to the story and if you choose not to watch it I recommend you read the first book.. so you understand what happens and why the character behaves as they do going forward in future episodes. I am so excited for the 3rd season to begin airing in September! 💙💚💛

We were taught about the clans in primary school in the 80's/90'sWe have a local guy who you would go to his house he taught you clans His sister could also recite Tam OShanter from memory. Here in the South West the most ignored part of Scotland We were brought up being taught Scots country dance, more Burns than you could shake a stick at and Scots history.

Lots of Yanks love Scottish history because much of the early American settlers were Scots. Because the environment of the early colonies was so different from Scotland a lot of the culture was lost here as well. Also, since the States is such a young country we don't really have much of a national identity; Yanks often cling to old immigrant roots to feed that need (e.g. Irish, Scottish, Mexican, African, etc.). That's great Scots enjoy the series. As an American I have always wanted to travel to Scotland, this series has only intensified that desire.
Very true. Often when we Americans feel lost, we turn to our roots as an anchor. I did, in the early 1990s, and started learning as much as I could about Scotland, going so far as to try to learn Gaelic. So many records lost in the Clearances, it makes research difficult. Similar losses of documentation about my Cherokee and Prussian ancestors are frustrating.
Absolutely true. I am an American and I have family from Scotland and we are obsessed with our Scottish heritage. In my small city we have three Scottish festivals and several Scottish import stores where we can buy tartan and clan trinkets. We definitely cling to our Scottish link because here in the US, we don't have much in the way of history or tradition. I've always wondered what Scottish people would think about our co-opting of their culture and whether they are as interested in the history of the clans/traditions/history/subjugation by the British/etc as we are.
It's very similar here in Australia. Many families have direct and very close roots from Scotland due ancestors being sent here for crimes. We're a very displaced nation with a lot of the more established families (who aren't native to the country of course) coming here from Scotland, Ireland and England.
I don't see it as 'co-opting' Scottish culture. I see it as honouring my family and forebears. This country is so vastly different to anything that most people had experienced before being sent here, so clinging to history and memories became extremely important to them.
There's still a fairly decent amount of emigration between the two areas and I feel pretty confident that we'll always maintain a close familial relationship so it doesn't feel odd that we have Scottish festivals regularly and mention our heritage with pride.
After all, we're supposed to be a nation of criminals and reprobates. Of course we're going to be proud for being a bit weird *chuckle*.

At least where I live, the link to Scotland is much more tenuous - most people have, like, a single Scottish ancestor 5 generations back. But I've found, almost without exception, that people tend to celebrate that Scottish link and ignore the other parts of their genetic history. I wonder what makes Scottish culture so appealing over other cultures to people here?
Kristine Lofgren+ My mother-in-law is Scottish. She's 80 and grew up in Bannockburn in Scotland. As you may know (I hope anyway :) ) Bannockburn was the site of a major Scottish victory against the English. She is immensely proud of her heritage, knows all of the tartans and was the highland dancing champion of Scotland from the age of 8. Her family emigrated to Australia when she was 14. She was the youngest.
I love speaking to her about her life in Scotland. It seems so rich in tradition and colour, if not in wealth.
I'm fifth generation Australian but I'm pure Irish on both sides of the family - a fairly common thing from my generation. It had a lot to do with religion of course. I feel a love and kinship for Scotland due to our shared Celtic history and terrible treatment by the English.
My MIL told me that schools didn't teach Scottish history to try to stamp out Scottish pride and individualism. Just as they banned the Celtic and Welsh languages. But her family taught her and as she toured all around Scotland dancing she knows a lot about Scotland.
She even danced for the Queen Mum, who she adored, and the Queen, who she wasn't impressed with :))).
I think her greatest sadness is that she never returned to Scotland as she's terrified of flying and she is now the only one left out of a family of six.
She has read all of the Diana Gabaldon books many times over and she said they are the only books that really make her feel like she's back home.

I am an American (heritage half Scottish, half Irish with a wee bit of Allemanisch German in there). Americans can be obsessed with our Revolutionary War. Here's an odd question. In recent decades, it has been observed by historians and pundits that in each war, the generals are actually fighting the previous war. Lessons learned were from the previous war, so naturally the generals try to apply those lessons learned even when the very nature of the war has changed. A new war breaks out, so we apply the lessons that we learned the last time around, even when they do not apply.
The Jacobite Uprising and the Battle of Culloden were in 1746, three decades before the USA Revolutionary War. When the colonists rose up, perhaps much as the Scots had done, wasn't that seen as the same thing as with the Scots? And had to be dealt with much as it had been dealt with with the Scots?
IOW, could we blame much of the British response to the 13 Colonies on how Culloden had taught them to deal with such a situation?
My wife has Scottish ancestry and is obsessed with Outlander. This show has given her another reason to visit Scotland. We're looking forward to this mess with the current situation to be over with so we can travel out and about.

The Outlander books sparked my interest in learning more about Scotland. I've learned so much history just from the seed that the books planted.
I live in Zurich, Switzerland. Everytime I see my town in a movie (Jason Bourne series for example) I realize its Prague not Zurich. But I understand that because its impossible to film here, just the traffic logistic would be a nightmare. So to all who complain about locations.. its a bloddy series. If you dont understand that, read tzhe books and stop watching. Its just a detail and doesnt matter that much. Especialy when you think about that our cities doesnt look like they did 200 years ago :-)

I agree with you. I lived in Germany for 7 years and have seen a good part of it. But the cities and towns bear little resemblance to hoe they appeared before the war. Yes, when the Germans put themselves to it, they can do amazing reconstruction work. Look what they've done to the historic reconstruction in Dresden. Other examples are not up to snuff, like Nuremberg. Which was an amazingly preserved Medieval city before the war. In fact look up how most of the major cities in Europe looked before the war. The incredible loss of so much history and beauty will make one weep.
I am Brazilian and I visited Scotland a few years ago and I just fell madly in love with it. Outlander caught my attention first because the story was in Scotland. I watched the first season on Netflix and I went mad about it. Then I went to the books and never stopped. I have read the nine books, but I keep reading them again as the seasons come on the show. Though all the three seasons are great, season one still remains my first love...

Cameron was in no position to "tell" anyone anything. Sony certainly thought he was going to "ask", but but there is no smoking gun that confirms he did. Also, when messing around with the fate of nations, people shouldn't really be swayed by a TV series. It's being shown now, and it can feed into any movement towards a second referendum.

Im in Minnesota in the US. I just started watching Outlander because of your reviews. Thank you for the recommendation! Yes episode 1 and 2 were hard to get into. But I love it. There is so much happening in each episode, each episode is like watching a movie. Ive got 5 season to catch up with everyone else, but I'll get there. Thanks again Shaun

I'm from Brazil and I spent 5 days in Edinburgh in 2014 and simply fell in love for Scotland culture. I started reading the Book's and watching the series, for me it's amazing to see a lot of Sotland culture in this Book/TV show. I intend to visit Scotland again, this time with more days to visit all Scotland.

Very interesting viewpoints! I must say that I was quite surprised to hear that Scottish history is apparently somewhat neglected in your educational system. Scottish history is (at least when I was in school...) covered fairly extensively in the schools on this side of the pond. That may be due to the influence of the many millions of Americans who are of Scottish ancestry, some families going back 250 years or more since they came here. We really admire Scotland and the Scots for their enduring dedication to freedom and liberty, values brought here that helped shape the history of America in a major way. I'm glad the reaction to Outlander is mostly positive; its always a potential minefield when you attempt to portray someone else's history, unless you do extensive research into the subject. Apparently the writers of Outlander took the time to do so.

I could be wrong (and please correct me if I am), but wasn't it illegal to teach Scottish history (particularly Highland history) in schools in Scotland until recent years? I don't remember where I got that information (I think maybe my gram told me, as she was herself a Scotswoman), but I do remember hearing something about it. Something about that being one of the terms the English brought down after the clans were broken apart.

Hi Elizabeth as a Scot who actually lives in Scotland, I can assure you that true Scottish history has always been taught in Scottish schools, although the socialist SNP are trying to re-write history using fiction like Outlander & Braveheart. David Cameron certainly did not have the power to ban TV & the internet from showing these films either. Perhaps you should check out the leftist policies of Nicola Sturgeon & decide if you would vote for her in the USA. She has admitted to being Hilary Clinton’s number 1 fan-girl..
I'm a huge fan of Outlander and just returned from a trip to Scotland in which I visited as many film sites as I could. None disappointed and Scotland as a whole didn't either. I've never felt so at home in a place. I want to move there now! I strongly encourage everyone to travel to Scotland if they get the chance!
