Kokanee Salmon vs. Stocked Trout Catch n' Cook Taste Test

  • Another catch and cook taste test! First time taking out our Hobie kayaks and we caught 4 species - smallmouth, pikeminnow, kokanee (landlocked salmon) and trout - then we cooked up the salmon and trout over the grill for a taste test to see if we could really tell the difference! That poor stocked trout did not stand a chance....

Kokanee Salmon would always taste better than hatchery trout. Trout that has lived in the wild long enough to absorb the natural nutrients from natural feed will also taste better than trout straight out of the hatchery. Hatchery food is not that good, but it gets the fish started in life. I love smoked salmon. When my father was still alive we caught and smoked many, many salmon. Fish with your Dad as long as you can.

I only say rainbow trout cause I live in utah and it's what we mostly caught. I'd take rainbow over any other fish. Maybe it's cause I was the cleaner boy and gutted them myself at a young age (it really makes you appreciate what your eating). I just have a soft spot for rainbow trout for that reason.

Sweet Kayak man! Great choice! Good job getting rid of that pikeminnow. We have a problem with them in the Columbia River, I've caught and killed several out of the Sandy River too. They're a bounty fish in Oregon as well. Some of the pikeminnow are tagged and bring in $500 per fish. It's $5 per for your first 25 fish, fish #26-#200 are $6 per fish and you get $8 per fish after 200 caught. Not sure if that's still the prices but they were that price a couple years ago.

the interesting thing about pike minnow is that they are not a problem in the sense that they are out of control. it's the fact that they have been given an advantage with the building of dams. they were obviously doing no harm until they were built. plus they really aren't a problem in the lakes themselves
