I'm doing a small front bumper repair on a "06 Saturn. The repair is on the lower front and it'll be blended. I need to primer, paint, clear and blend. I'm not sure what primer would be the best for this repair. I couldn't find a repair video identical to my situation. I'm doing it on the cheap but still looking for a good result. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks for sharing this video.
You can use any primer on the bumper as long as it is wiped down with rubbing alcohol real good and scuffed well. You'll be fine with RUSTOLEUM filler primer - either in a spray bomb or can if you have a spray gun. Epoxy, urethane or lacquer primer works too if you want a more $ primer 👍🎃😊
@@robbyddurham1624 I didn't get any chips on the paint or clear. but I did spray 3 coats of clear on it. It actually lasts a long time if you regularly wash and wax your car or truck. I did again last year to a rear wing spoiler on my current car and it still looks great but I do buff my car with Mequiars Ultimate compound every 3 to 4 months.
@@LakesideAutobody Yup. The rattle can area(paint and clear) was big enough to show up. Also, the touch-up paint did go on a little thick, so I did sand that flat. The clear coat from the touch-up looked good, so I just left it.
Careful folks! I just spent 2 days working with this product on a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (PW1). Come to find out after finishing the job it did NOT come close to matching the original paint. A little research says that E7 is the right one to use to match up to the PW1 labeled on my driver's side door. WTF???
So I am a spray painter by trade and colour matching is a big part of our job. Why this is is because a car manufacturer has a multitude of different factories for making different vehicles. So lets use for example fords winter white (their most common white) in the Australian factory they may have had a contract with the Debeer paint system in that factory whilst in the American factory they may use the PPG paint system. This is where the colour matching comes in because of the different paint systems used in manufacturing processes mean the colours come out slightly different. So when a painter mixes up a colour using a PPG paint system they go through the colour library where there could be 5 different variants of winter white ranging from "yellower" to "bluer" or even "cleaner" to "dirtier". So we pick the variant closest to the car colour and then tint it (process of colour matching) to match the exact car colour which can be near impossible sometimes which is why we tend to blend panels. Dupli-Color is not a professional paint system used in factories so you will never see a colour that ever matches hence why you should never use a rattle can to paint a panel. Especially since dupli is acrylic and the paint on your car will more than likely be a solvent based system. Get a cheap compressor and a spray gun and teach yourself to paint.
My car was painted with rustoleum lagoon GLOSS paint but it's out of stock they do have it in SATIN finish. Can I use this and put Clear coat to make it glossy?
I have not put clear over rustoleum but I've seen videos on 2K Urethane clear over rustoleum and it looks great. I would wet sand the rustoleum with 1500 grit before the clear just to make sure it sticks - not sure how well urethane sticks to the fully dried rustoleum. Hope that helps in some way. Ask more ?s on this if you need - Jerry
Dupli color makes a clear gloss....would you need to prepare the dupli color base before applying the clear coat? I saw your video of blending the red dupli color and then topped it with your own mix of clear. I'm still at the priming stage of my welded on bed panel...didn't even block sand with the guide coat yet. Anyway, I bought my spray bomb set of Rustoleum primer (2in1 sandable), Duplicolor flame red, and dupli color 1K clear extreme gloss "gasoline resistant" clear coat. Let's see how that goes.
Keep me posted. You don't need to prep the duplicolor paint. Let it dry for about 1/2 to 1 hour and spray your clear right over the top. You can knock some dust nibs down before if you don't plan on wet sanding and buffing :)
Just finished spraying on dupli color oxford white ford color . Paint feels rough to the touch. What can i do to fix it ? Dont even know why it came out like i did another part of the truck & it didnt come out like that
Maybe the tip was clogged. Another thing is that it's lacquer so if its hot outside it dries almost as soon as it hits the panel and you end up spraying over dry spray, etc. and it never has time to "lay down" You can wet sand with 400 and give it another coat - but wait till it's cooler outside :)
It does't have primer mixed in. You can paint over the old paint job as long as you sand it with 220 or finer. Any repairs like filler or bare metal you have to prime first. Jerry
I used a buffer from Harbor Freight (7" 10 Amp Var. Sp. Polisher by Drill Master), a wool buffing pad, and Meguiars ultra cut compound (105) - but you can use any old buffer and some good rubbing compound like 3m or Meguiars. Then Polish.
You'de be better off going to auto paint supply store, and getting a can of matched enamal. About twice the price, but the paint is proper. Enamal is what is on your car, and what is best to put back on. Lacquer is not a durable paint
If you don't want to clear it you can just paint it using duplicolor perfect match or for a better shine use single stage urethane or acrylic enamel - they both use a hardener. Something like Nason Ful-Cryl - here's an example - ua-cam.com/video/-ykX4DNCcNw/v-deo.html
Well... it is lacquer and lacquer doesn't hold up as well as enamel - especially hardened enamel. If you cleared it with an enamel or urethane with a hardener, it would hold up real well. You can put enamel over lacquer but you can't put lacquer over enamel. I would use it my self though for a repair and have done so in the past - I was happy with the durability but it wasn't a show car either.
Try spraying it without clear. Then buff. It's lacquer so it has to be buffed to get it to shine. Should shine real easy though. Let me know if you try it and how it worked. Maybe try it on a practice panel - small area. Jerry
Trust me, If I could see like I could when I was a kid, I would have to wear glasses. When you turn 40 your eyes will go bad - won't be able to see up close - guaranteed. My kid says no but it'll happen.

I did this to an old car I had but I used the Dupli color Lacquer clear spray paint on top of the color and it came out really shiny with no buff.
That's exactly what I wanted to know.
how durable was it? did it chip easily over the next few years after you painted it?

Lacquer needs a lot of attention but can be sanded and buffed to a superior shine. If you polish and wax every 2 months it can last long
Can you use 2k clear over duplicolor ?
Yes, it's lacquer. You can put enamel or urethane over lacquer but not lacquer over enamel or urethane it may wrinkle or react funny. Jerry

No, but you can if you want with any type of enamel clear or urethane as it is lacquer.
How do you think the durability of this paint will be ??
Well... it is lacquer and lacquer doesn't hold up as well as enamel - especially hardened enamel. If you cleared it with an enamel or urethane with a hardener, it would hold up real well.
