  • Rappin' With ReefBum is a LIVE talk show with host Keith Berkelhamer and guests from the reef keeping community. In this episode I chat with Chris Wood from Captiv8 Aquaculture.
Chris is a marine biogeochemist and the Chief Science Officer of Captiv8 Aquaculture. He is also the founder and sole owner of Captiv8. The company’s R&D draws from Chris’ experience and two additional scientists, with a total of four PhDs.
Chris entered the aquatics industry in 2000 as a marine scientist and product development and support specialist, and since that time has worked with aquarists and organizations throughout the world to improve outcomes with aquarium systems and recirculating aquatic ecosystems. Some of the organizations that have used his formulations include the Smithsonian Institute, Disney, NASA, and the Israeli Government, as well as several aquaculture operations in the U.S, including ACI Aquaculture.

Great conversation! I love how humble and honest Chris was about what he does know and what he doesn't know. A breath of fresh air!

Chris convinced me, the Captiv8 for my new build should be here in 8 to 10 days!

I found so much variability in the accuracy of pH monitoring at that high range. I use the Hanna DIST4 EC checker (as you said, Keith, I got this EC tip from Randy H-F articles). I know my Kalk is ready for the doser when it's stable at 10+. When I first got the DIST4, I found that following the "recipes" for dry product to water were getting results as low as 5-6. Mostly I want to emphasize that I don't think EC is superior to pH, but that EC was far superior to the traditional "follow the recipe and when you see the clear solution separate out it's ready". It was not the case!
I'm also able to measure "drift" of stored saturated solution with EC nicely. While I don't know if it's necessarily true for all products, I've found it to be remarkably stable without a "stirrer", but I keep it really airtight with even saran bound by electrical tape under the lid.

Who doesn't love science?!?! It seems you have the most guests with common sense and intelligence.

Where can the salt be purchased?

Great discussion as usual! I just checked the price of the kalk on the captive 8 site and surprisingly it's a better price than the bulk stores. Only problem is that it comes in a 22 lb size. Do you think that the potency goes down over tim for the dry powder? That size will probably last me a few years! And Keith, do you find that it mixes clear quickly? Thanks

If you keep it sealed airtight & dry it will be good for many years. Same for the mixed solution. Exposure to atmospheric CO2 and moisture is the thing to avoid. You may want to open the original packaging as little as possible, by perhaps putting a supply you think you will use in the next 3-6 months in a separate airtight container.

I'm kind of surprised that Chris is referring to the dry calcium hydroxide as kalkwasser. Kalkwasser is just German for a lime water solution, generally a saturated one. The saturated solution of calcium hydroxide in water is kalkwasser, not the calcium hydroxide powder that you buy.

What were the PH values the controller was set at for a low and high ? I can’t find the part of the video where he said what they were…

Recently after a fire at our store we ran out of blue bucket and had to use some of the regular IO we had on the shelf. Alk was mixing to 12 for some reason. I specifically avoided reef crystals so I didn’t run into that but I’ll never use IO on any system I run again after seeing that. Way to high for what it is supposed to mix at and would crash a normal all range tank in an emergency. It’s good for replenishing stuff lost between changes but imo not worth the savings to have a potentially tank crashing salt if you get into a situation where you need to change a lot of water.

Make sure to mix the bucket every time, shipping can settle elements of the salt in every bucket of salt. Roll it on the ground a bunch and do another mix and you'll find it evens out. Reef crystals always measures out fine for me on all majors doing this

When Chris says that his food is a mix of bacterial plankton (around 1:13:00), does he mean they are made of spirulina (cyanobacteria) ? If so, is there any possibility of any of it being alive or able to reproduce in our tanks?
