    I'm surprised you got as much info in the video as you did, planning is such a big can of worms haha. It's always interesting to see scenes get analyzed like that, it really added to the info you went over. Awesome video as always!

      Thanks! Looking back I think I might have tried to squeeze a little too much info into it because as you say, planning has soooo much to it, but I think I'll go into more detail with some of these topics in their own videos.

    Thorough planning takes away the anxiety that comes with uncertainty. I personally storyboard with constantly updated notes so that I don't have to think too much when animating.

      100% agree with you on that ! If I don't plan properly, I get really anxious ! My personal storyboards always end up looking like a mess with all the notes ha ha

    Saving that quote. :) I wonder if comic book artists have an advantage when moving into animation because of the ability to capture the emotional transitions from panel to panel.

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  2 роки тому +3

      I think you're onto something there. I've seen quite a few very talented comic book artists move into animation and take to it like a duck to water. I think that way of thinking for comic books or storyboarding really helps the flow and understanding when it comes to animating. As well as the drawing skill of course.

    HI Robyn, great video! I have to admit I haven't put much thought into storyboarding. I wonder if you know of a resource for generic story boards to practice with? I'm still learning Maya and basic animation but this sounds like something to make a habit of from the beginning...I have The Animators Survival Kit ordered and on the way, perhaps there is more on storyboarding in that?

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks Justin! You can basically just google "blank animation storyboard" and you can pick whichever you like the most. I like to use templates that have 6 blocks on them so I dont have to have the frames be too small, and still have enough space for notes and direction. The Animators Survival Kit doesn't really go into storyboarding. It has a few pages on X-sheets or dope sheets, but a lot of places don't really use dope sheets anymore and they prefer just using storyboards. You can check out this post from Bloop animation, hopefully it'll help a bit ( www.bloopanimation.com/how-to-storyboard/ ). I plan on also making a video at some point about it.

      UA-cam is supposed to add automatic subtitles but I think my accent or something messes with it because I don't have the option to automatically generate them🙁. Unfortunately I can't transcribe them manually, it would just take way too long for every video. I'll try to see if I can find a way to solve the autogenerating problem

      It can be a nice creative exercise to just go where the wind blows you but for really strong and clear shot, it's best to plan it out in detail !

  • @maxmagnus777

    You've really shined in explaining the shot with Razbaznadgel. I would love to see you analyze 10 more shots like this. (12:38 The video was a bit too dark but you shed some light on it).
    As for the rest you really need to expand on most of the staff in the first part of the video and make 3-4 smaller more comprehensive ones. I would love to see step by step explanations on how to do stuff (there was like 20 of the stuff).
    Anyways, excellent second part of the video, cheers.

      @RobynO_O  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! You're right, I realised while editing that there's so much info and so much more I need to go into so I think I'll treat this as sort of an overview for things to think of or remember when planning, and then make some other videos elaborating more on the stuff I talk about here, focusing on each one in its own video. Thanks for the feedback, it's always good to know how I can make the videos better.

      @@RobynO_O Anyways... how about those analysis of Razpangdel and other scenes? I mean nobody is doing them and if you do them in a bit slower pace and explain the basics of them that could be an unique stuff on youtube. I mean I would love to watch those once a week. I guess that you would grow also in such analysis so it would be a win-win-win.

    That's what I wanna do basically. 0:06
    Does the planning process take longer when you're working by yourself? Essentially what are the advantages and disadvantages when working by yourself on a 10 - 15 minute animated short film especially when you first starting to animate?

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 роки тому +1

      Planning does take longer when you're by yourself mostly because you have to do every single thing by yourself. When working on a team, you can divide and conquer, and a storyboard artists who knows what they're doing because they specialize in doing storyboards will work quicker than someone who doesn't specialize in storyboarding, just because they'll have more experience in it. It also speeds up the process when you can bounce ideas off other people and get other contributions rather than trying to figure out everything by yourself, and having people concentrate on specific roles makes it a much smoother process. In general, animation is much easier if you have a team or a few other people you can split it between. Of course, it's not always possible or necessary, especially if it's just a few shots or a short, and many people create incredible animated work all by themselves but it takes much longer and is a harder road. One perk of working on an animation by yourself is that you have complete creative control but it's a lot for one person to take on and animation work does well to have other input and feedback.

    • @FantasticMario
      @FantasticMario 3 роки тому

      @@RobynO_O That makes sense, I just don't really have anyone to rely on for the animation and planning process really. But I'm all for the tough road ahead because it gives me a sense of complete fulfilment knowing I did this animation all by myself!

      for storyboarding, Directing the Story by Francis Glebas is great, he's a veteran Disney artist. Here's a link to it on Amazon if you wanna check it out (amzn.to/3CgPg7K) As well as Storyboards Motion in Art by Mark Simon (amzn.to/37nVEvD) For cinematography, there's Exploring Digital Cinematography (Computer Animation Team) by Jason Donati , and that covers directing, lighting, camera blocking, depth of field, etc (amzn.to/3rYpBMy)
