My first thought when the hand-print showed up on the screen: "Run back and get your arm!" BUT then I felt a sense of total and utter despair when I saw that it needed HEAT signatures, which the dead arm wouldn't give off. I also really loved how this character wasn't your run-of-the-mill good treasure-hunting guy - if he'd succeeded, we basically would've seen the uprising of a villain. Such an excellent animation!
Same. I also loved the sudden shock of seeing him standing on the robot in front of the ruined city, and then the reveal of the dead map seller at the end.
This is AMAZING, I have no words to describe my feelings. The picture is just gorgeous, the sound, the dynamics, the story. The creators did a great job! I'm going to review this video more than once!
I can imagine it being some kinda retro-styled platformer, with the same artstyle…then halfway through the game, you realize you’re playing as the villain of the story, then end up dying at the hands of ancient robots lol
what i loved the most in this : transitions between scenes, and the good/bad characters thing, it was well done even the look of the principle character was "good character" looking. love it.
Engaging yet simple story line. I've seen roughly 50 CG bros shorts and this is definitely in the top 3! Fantastic art work, great action sequences, and dramatic shifts from light to dark environments. We always say in film: "the Big 3; sound, composition and framing" and this short has all 3 in spades! The music complimented the emotional moments and created an admiration for the hero. I really wanted to see him win. 5 Stars!
When he realized the prize was taking over the machine to rule the world he kinda felt disappointed but he needed to survive cause the machine was about to kill him but unfortunately he lost
The ending is amazing because his greed and sick determination made him ignore losing his arm which would've costed his life if it weren't for the fact that that the arm he sacrificed long ago was needed to survive. So even if he cared about his severed arm it still wouldn't be enaught because from the beginning his adventure had been doomed.
It´s not likely, that the protagonist "sacrificed" his arm long ago, but he consciously changed it for a "better" version. At the very beginning of the story you can see the cynic advertising about the tech-arm: "Throw away that piece of flesh that you call an arm !" In the end he fails because he is not a full human, but already half a robot. The arm is just a symbol of his inhumanity...
WOW He was the villain all the time! And it's impossible to dominate the world with that X robot! Because everyone has robotic left arms and the machine needed real hands! This is geeeeeeeeniuss!!
The only things that bugs me about all this is that if a laser was to cut off an arm, it wouldn't bleed. The intense heat from the laser would seal the wound up before and blood was spilled. Otherwise amazing animation
i think a lot more blood would be lost from a cleanly sliced off limb so it's probably that the laser was so focused that it left a *thin* layer of cauterization which would reopen like a scab when the skin around it shifts
You'd think so, but no. A laser powerful enough to cut an arm off in a single sweep would actually boil the blood it contacted instantly into steam, making it less of a cauterizing action than just exploding his arm off.
This was awesome. I jumped to conclusions that the merchant sold him a map that he knew would lead to his peril with no reward. He got mad cash, and that problem that had just paid him wouldn't be complaining for a _refund_.
GAME OVER 11:19 The contrast combination of comics and games is amazing Whenever I have a game over, I think it would be really fun to have an animation like this.
I watched this on VRV 2-3 times, I could've sworn that this was 2D, I already considered this one of the best things I've ever seen and this just made it even better.
For the most part cool story, very nice animation. Nice work on the "journey" storytelling; sense of adventure, foreshadowing (e.g. with the bird flying away before you know he'll slip), plottwists, jokes, setting up conflict, viewer thinking along with the protagonist, atmospherics. Great music design and I enjoyed the soundtracks, they gave some extra energy to the short. Picking up the same music when the protagonist left the store, as when he entered the scene at the beginning, I found an interesting touch. The plot had a good pace, but started slacking when the antagonist had to be beaten again and again, with not so many new elements. Towards the end, I started thinking ahead of the character's actions (i.e. "grab the arm instead of fuzzing with the computer!"); which didn't exactly thicken the tension but rather felt a bit aimless and odd. The finale was not as strong as may have been expected from the former pace, energy or even surprises of the short - the character's defeat might in itself have been a nice classic tragedy-type of ending, but the connection to the moral justification for it could have been clearer. I suppose it would be "don't get your arms lazered off your body", but "greed does not reward" might work as well :p This small evaluation is meant positive. After all, that there's something to give critique on, means there's enough interesting substance to criticise in the first place. I would surely encourage the artists to keep on creating!
the cool thing about it is that at first one may think the robot was the villain, but in the end it was just protecting the world from evil people who would have used their bad intentions to use it in their destroying the world.
i think they meant the music video for porter robinson - shelter. though personally i think art-wise and details, this one is way better. but of course shelter is lovable for the music (which is the main point) and the storyline that goes with it.
the story line is incredibly moving and heart wrenching, the music is obviously good, but the animation was also beautiful and you could feel the passion they poured into the short.
I have watched a far few times over the years and have to say that this is of my most favorite and enjoyed animated stories with beautiful dynamic sound! #Stunning
Ahhhh revisit. Don't know why YT keeps recommending videos I've seen years ago and liked already. Get your algorithms together. I still love this story.
Those were some beautiful looking visuals. Gave me a blade runner vibe, especially 2049. Why can’t Hollywood animated films ever look this good or interesting. Every freaking cgi kids movie looks the same
Very cool. I love this kind of stuff with lost advanced civilizations. I really love this style of using CG to make cartoon looking stuff. And I'll admit I would totally get an X-5 arm for myself. I just wouldn't use it to pillage ruins. Probaby just rocket punch my brothers when they aren't looking or change channels on the T.V. when I can't find the remote.
At first the protagonist looked like a cool dude, but after all that killing the merchant and almost got his "hands" onto the super WMD...I feel good that karma made him pay his debt by the most cruel way possible.
the game was already over before he even started it. the scan required a real left hand. knowing the requirements is just as equally important as having the right map.
Heavy visual influence from maaaany other famous movie/game titles, such as Akira, Astroboy, Lord of the Rings (Gandalf Vs Balrog) or the game Out of this World, or even Oddworld Abe's Oddissey (compare their Scarab monster and the X orb machine). Other than that, it was a great story. Kudos.
My take on the moral of this story...perhaps, the aspects of ourselves we think are the most replaceable, useless, weak....because the most irreplaceable ones every so often. I'm amazed at the animation, the style, the way it had its own beat. Fun watch with a dark twist.
A bit of a cliche' ending, was afraid it was going to be "You need a human hand" sort of thing when he lost his right arm. What I wasn't expecting, was the "2 days earlier" bit, to make you not feel so bad for the bastard.
I have a few points to say about this film: 1. I like the subtle humor here and there. 2. I like the twist where his Power Arm was essential and helped him get all the way to the end, but didn't help him in the last step. 3. I think that the fact he didn't get access to the X Bot was for the best. That vision he had of him rising to power because of his access to the X Bot gives me shivers. 4. I now have a fear of the letter X.
this feels like an amazing concept for a story puzzle game. The montage shots made me think of limbo in particular-- but the concept of trading your body to become more powerful and costing the mission just feels like a great end game cutscene! beautifully made, great character design and color use.
Same. I also loved the sudden shock of seeing him standing on the robot in front of the ruined city, and then the reveal of the dead map seller at the end.
well i mean it wasn't long ago that the arm was cut off so it still would've been warm for a few minutes
I'm not sure about the heat signatures, as it takes time for something to cool down
if 5 prints + one palm is enough for signature, the feet should also do.
It also needed his left hand, not his right. Idk if it would've worked with his right hand.
this is why you keep your normal arms, you should add extra arms if you want mechanical ones
People am I right ?
DiamondGirl XD yup
So true.
Dark Angel Dreadnaught Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.

Rewatching this after two years and I still want a full show/movie with this story and art style it’s fucking perfect
This is AMAZING, I have no words to describe my feelings. The picture is just gorgeous, the sound, the dynamics, the story. The creators did a great job! I'm going to review this video more than once!
Akira
Victoria W This!!! the sound matched the film well.. all the element came together! Kudos to the team
Yeah I loved this short, so perfect
This would be a badass videogame haha. Let's hope
Sam Gameover If this was a vifeogame i bet it'll be an 8-bit videogame :v
This life also😂
Oh fr, I would totally play this
I think it's called Horizon Zero Dawn
I can imagine it being some kinda retro-styled platformer, with the same artstyle…then halfway through the game, you realize you’re playing as the villain of the story, then end up dying at the hands of ancient robots lol
Moral of the story: limbs are important.
no what comes around goes around
Alex Hackett i agree with both and the moral is somethings are not ment to be replaced or upgraded.
I think the moral of the story is:
Always bring a friend, you never know if you'll need a hand.
i think it is " always take your limbs with you if a laser cuts them"
always bring a hand no matter what or just break that scanner.
what i loved the most in this :
transitions between scenes,
and the good/bad characters thing, it was well done even the look of the principle character was "good character" looking. love it.
This animation is literally worthy of a full motion picture
Be careful what you give up; be careful what you accept.
(i.e., flesh & blood; & an unspecified treasure!)
Cathy Vickers Great takeaway
Nice
The treasure in this case was authority over the robot
I swear, that warning sound and that "screaming" of the robot is absolutely terrifying!

AMAZING!!
In our quest for power we often give up our humanity.
The most important of us we often forsake
When you think about it , the robot was actually the good guy
@@reyneo6791 yeah, he protected the world from himself.
Preach
When he realized the prize was taking over the machine to rule the world he kinda felt disappointed but he needed to survive cause the machine was about to kill him but unfortunately he lost
Lol I like it. Good blend of 2/3D.
Felix Figueroa Yeah some parts felt like a platform jump game!
The best ive seen yet .... most is 2d, the face and mouth are animated/painted over the 3d model .. what need to download and watch frame by frame
The ending is amazing because his greed and sick determination made him ignore losing his arm which would've costed his life if it weren't for the fact that that the arm he sacrificed long ago was needed to survive. I wonder if it's such a smart idea to have your business advertised as "ILLEGAL TREASURE MAP SHOP"
My thoughts exactly
How else would they find it😂
WOW
He was the villain all the time!
Otherwise amazing animation
haha I thought the exact same thing!
yeah, but you know.......blood is cool and shit
Riyad Chokri I singed bloody arm is also bloody cool!
i think a lot more blood would be lost from a cleanly sliced off limb so it's probably that the laser was so focused that it left a *thin* layer of cauterization which would reopen like a scab when the skin around it shifts

The sound is what I best remember about this piece. So nicely done.
why do I feel like its a video game show case.
Cause of lots of references. Platforms, ropes, viewpoint from the side, pixelated "2 days before" sign...:)
hell even the art style is quite often used in 2d videogames.
Hei og takk til mor
Search up "snes another world"
A game that looks like this.
I thought same. It could be an amazing game
This gave me some deeep INCREDIBLES nostalgia. loved it.
Is it just me or does he look like a grown up Astro boy?
I'm Pretty Dank •-• yup.. me too. and also animation style.
I'm Pretty Dank •-•omg I thought I was the only one who thought this 😂. The character, art style, everything (nothing wrong with that though)
I'm Pretty Dank •-• I THOUGHT THE SAME THING!!!
Astro boy is also weaponize and can fly unless he lost those abilities he would be a good match against that thing
Ahh my butthole
you could say his robot arm wasnt that handy...
starling lol
The robot arm was VERY handy

Wow xD
love to see an adventure platform with this animatics
The background details and lighting effects are extraordinary!
I was yelling at the screen for him to go get his severed hand because it couldn't have cooled down that much after just a few minutes, could it?
I think he realized that too but it was too late when the machine got to the bridge
but the thing is it has to be the left hand. you know, with the thumb on the right and all.
Didn't think of that, he was screwed no matter what he did
jessidraws If my arm was cut off, I would pick it up and carry it with me.
Danshaku Lawrence same.
This was awesome.
I jumped to conclusions that the merchant sold him a map that he knew would lead to his peril with no reward.
He got mad cash, and that problem that had just paid him wouldn't be complaining for a _refund_.
Well, the merchant did not expect he would succeed finding anything useful there.
One of the greatest animated action film I've watched. Brilliant story, great animation, and amazing sound. Hats off
Art , sounds, camera movement, character, and environment design are all wonderful in this movie.
The main character was bad and evil because he was happy to get control of that beast to destroy the world
Best animation
GAME OVER 11:19

Ahhhh revisit. Don't know why YT keeps recommending videos I've seen years ago and liked already. Get your algorithms together.
I still love this story.
The facial expressions, backgrounds, animation, and art style are marvelous
This is so good, the only thing that is missing is the Love Death & Robots Logo as the Intro!
Love the 90s neon-cyberpunk point&click adventure game aesthetic!!!
i need another version of this, or a continue with the same protagonist, this was absolutely awesome
Would need a new protagonist. This one's kind of dead.
Ey x Ien maybe a prequel? A backstory with this character would be amazing.
Did you mean "antagonist"?
Best animation, lighting, shots and story since the Incredibles. Kudos!
Am I the only one who thinks he should've ran back and retrieve his arm when he still has the chance...I mean, it's still fresh
True but he didn't figure it out in time.
GreenGrounds Doesn’t matter, the hand wouldn’t of helped anyway, he needed a flesh LEFT arm, his left arm was robotic so, yeah
Yep
@@conscripthornet4430 technically it doesn't matter if it's left or right, as long as the limb is flesh with finger print he can control the robot
It had a heat detection. The dead arm is Cold, you know
This is legitimately one of the best pieces of story telling I've ever encountered.
Spectacular. I guess his power hand had one major flaw after all...
Only 1.200.000 views in 3 years? Cmon, wtf?
This is amazing.
Wait so the ""protagonist" was looking to rule that evil robot thing so he can destroy the world?
Sir0cks yyyyyyep...at first i didn't get the ending but at the second time i understood it...and i didn't feel bad for him!
Who doesn't want a robot that can destroy the world!!!!!
Or rule the world and kill all who oppose him
I don't think the robot was evil. I think it was trying to keep itself from being controlled.
Protagonist doesn’t always mean good :)
I loved the aesthetic, i really like cyberpunk and dystopian worlds
This is amazing. It inpires me a ton.
I wish stuff like this this got more attention.
OMG, THAT'S LITERALLY THE MOST ADORABLE THING IVE EVER SEEN!

(insert high-pitched scream)
Still, ain't gonna work, that scanner requires a flesh left hand, which he doesn't have to begin with!
BC he has a left robot arm.
Oh my god those backgrounds, those EVERYTHING
The art style, that thing that chases the guy...
Reminds me of the game *"Another World"*
This is so good. I love this so much. I keep coming back to it. I love the style, the music, the atmosphere, everything.
The old classic tale of reaping what you sow
Love how the mechanical monster made a silhouette of an X as if he lost the game.
in love the animation and art style! so dope!
MORE!!!! I want see more of this story or universe! This AWESOME
This should be in the upcoming love, death, and robots season.
❤️☠️🤖
Such style! Such color! Such panache! Such a leitmotif!
Im in love with the art style damn
I love the red X blinking at 11:39, such an eerie sound
I am 75% certain that most of this was inspired by video games in some way.
THIS IS SO GOOD. GREAT PLOT/STORY, GRAPHICS/ANIMATION & ALL. I REALLY ENJOYED IT 👍

also sucks to not have an arm when u need one o-o
That arm chop was personal.

I love the twist ending of just showing just one extra detail about the god damn start that changes the entire perspective :)
