- Mojo Nixon saved me from getting beat up in Indianapolis. The title pretty much says it all. Back in the mid 90s, I got into a scuff with some frat boys out in front of a bar called The Patio in Indianapolis. They were pissing in the middle of the street, I lost my cool and started yelling at them. I lived two blocks away and was tired of young white males treating my neighborhood like their own private toilet. So, I snapped. I was about to get stomped down by these three guys when Mojo Nixon rode in like the cavalry and saved the day. It's a true story, I promise.

I first found him on XM Outlaw. Spent countless days workin in the oilfield and nights sucking down beer in the truck listening to that station hoping for his show to come back around. That energy is contagious especially after 15 Keystones and a whack of bad speed. Tie my pecker to my leg..

Mojo played at Stebb's in Cedar Falls, IA. He was walking around so I said "hey Mojo". Extremely gracious. He even called my co-worker that had to miss the show from a payphone via the company 800 # (pre cell phone days). He put on a hell of a show. Sat at our table for a little bit to watch the local band.

I was there too. Best show I ever saw at Stebs. Mojo’s attitude and ideas match mine to a T. America is best at the low brow. Gut level music and fun not high art. Cosmopolitan hillbilly- my kinda guy. He and his music were both awesome and hilarious.

I saw Mojo Nixon and New Duncan Imperials at the Satellite Lounge in Houston in the early 90's. It was summer and hot as hell. I sat at the bar drinking a rapidly warming Budweiser long neck. Mojo walks up, we bullshit for a minute. We both start bitching about the heat. I say something about the warm beer, and he recommends a gin and tonic. He says it is his goto on a hot day. Damn if he wasn't right. Still one of my summer time favorites. He played a song that night that I still remember "Its too hot too fuck". If you spend any time in the south you will understand.

Great Experience
I’ve never been to a mojo Nixon show, but when I was in college in the 1980s he came to our campus and in an interview before the show He said lots of outrageous things that made me laugh and laugh again. The next day in the newspaper there was a picture of mojo Nixon singing loud and clear with his head sticking out of a broken out TV set. He had long hair, frazzled, and he was saying, “this is what it would look like if I was on MTV (Music Television)!” It was so funny because his head was literally sticking out of the TV sset where the glass had been broken out. Some of the things he said about dormitory girls was so funny but I can’t repeat it here. Something like, knowing that we had a dry campus, that it wasn’t dry everywhere, ha ha!
Mojo also had a funny Song relating to a fetish he had with a hostess on MTV. I think the refrain went something like this, “music television should be covered with Jism!”
Busted out laughing when..."that's a lot better then them songs about your feelings" LOL

I'm a huge Mojo fan. I have been since the late 80s. I met him at the Continental Club in Austin during his first retirement tour. I have a similar story. He said, "Where's Mojo know you from?" I had to explain that I 'd jumped up on stage with him in Seattle. He said, "Mojo don't like that." I apologized. He asked, "Do you want to get drunk with Mojo?" Of course my answer was "There is nothing in the world I'd like more than that." We got drunk. That's my Mojo story.
Super cool story!! Broad Ripple was THEE funkiest spot in Indy in the 80’s and early 90’s. There was nothing like it.
Mojo is a vastly underrated boogie woogie guitar player. If he didn't have the instrumental chops, he'd be a mildly interesting singer-songwriter. But he gets asses shaking with that rhythm guitar, and it makes a huge difference at his shows.
Mojo saved my soul and partied with him! Gonna miss him!

Storytelling is the lost or forgotten art of humanity. It’s deeper & harder than stand up comedy & that is hard as hell. Stand up it’s the jokes for laughter. Storytelling brings laughter without a joke, it’s the joy of truth and timing.
Just found this old video. Otis requested Mojo stories. Mine is first hand. My friends from WJUL radio at Lowell, Ma , were running a rave club in Nashua, NH in downtown. Paul Z. ,Phil S. and Mike. W were running an all ages dance club and they got asked to host an MTV Rock the Vote event featuring Mojo Nixon. This was 1992. One of our friends, Dick Seed was a long time friend of Mojo's and Dick showed, because Mojo was there. It was winter time and NH weather is tough on travel and people. Mojo was very sick, bad cough clogging him up, but people showed up to see and he soldiered through a short set. He was in need of rest and fluids and would have right to refuse to play.
Big Whiskers played by Mojo on Outlaw Country was how I discovered you Otis.

Great story from a long lost time in Broad Ripple. Not only is The Patio gone but those frat boys have bought up the entire village and filled it with multi story condos and apartments.

When I was a kid, my dad would give me a taste of whatever and it always tasted terrible. I just never really got started because it all tasted so bad. I've always said that if beer was a soft drink, it would go out of business in a week.. ; )

Mojo Nixon used to pop up on MTV promos doing these two minute rants. I still remember the one about Mojo's holy trinity, Elvis Presley, Foghorn Leghorn, and Ottis the drunk. I think it might still on be on UA-cam though I haven't been able to find it, but I saw a video of Mojo Nixon live about to play "Don Henley Must Die" when Don Henley himself jumps up on stage and does the song with him. When the song is done and Henly leaves the stage Mojo says something like "he's got balls I'll give him that."
RIP Mojo. You'll be greatly missed.

Mojo was getting his picture taken with a guy who made a guitar strap for him on the Outlaw Country Cruise. I think it was in the Atrium. I was standing right behind them so I proudly threw up my finger in the background. Picture taker reframed his shot a bit to get me in. Never saw the picture.

God rest Mojo's irreverent soul. Like I told somebody once, I bought my Bobby Joe Thorazine act from Mojo Nixon at his garage sale. Other musicians in Nashville hated me, but I learned it all from the best. Hopefully, his and Debbie Gibson's warped offspring can keep the family name in music from now own.

Otis, you've made me smile a thousand times now, but picturing your near ass-whuppin in Broadripple (I lived in Ft Wayne for 6yrs & know the area loosely) only to have Mojo play your songs with no recollection, & then tell you your Catfish song was alot better than the ones about your feelings, well as a songwriter who 1st got published at age 17 (I'm 60 now) & have only a few tunes NOT about my feelings, Well Sir, you left me crying with laughter over that remark...!! (Your Foghorn Leghorn closer & splashed outro weren't bad either...)

First of all, I gotta tell you, how you came on my radar. Sometime in the late 90's/early 2000's?, a friend of mine played a solo gig @ Frederick's Music Lounge in St. Louis, Mo. The next time I saw him, I said, "Who else was on the bill?" He said, "Some guy named Otis Gibbs" I said, "Was he any good?" He said, "Yeah, he was real good." I said, "Did he have a band?" He said, "No, he was solo acoustic" He came back with a cassette or CD of yours. I could tell then you were good. Then, years later, I started seeing your videos popping up on UA-cam. Anyway, I just wanna say how much I enjoy your music. You're a great talent. Now to the matter at hand. Great Mojo story. I have one too. Again, sometime in the mid to late 90's, I was at The Landing in downtown St. Louis during the V.P. Fair around the 4th of July. As always, during that time, there were a lot of great bands playing everywhere. I was walking across the street, with my girlfriend at the time, & Mojo Nixon walked past me in the opposite direction. He was wearing a flannel shirt with the sleeves ripped out, cut off shorts, ankle high work boots with no shoe laces, big mutton chop sideburns, & a curly pompadour hair style, with a duck tail in the back. My girlfriend didn't know who he was, but I did. I told her, "That was Mojo Nixon!" She said, "Who?" I turned around & said, "Mojo!" He turned around & I said, "Are you playing here somewhere?" He said, "Yeah, such & such stage @ 1:30 p.m" I got excited & said, "Great, we will be there!" I then asked him, "Hey, do you have anything new out?" He said, "We got one called "Real Sock Ray Blue" Do you have that one?" I said "No, but I want one." He said, "See me after the show & I'll fix you up with one." I said "Great!" He then winked at me & said, "I might have to charge you a few bucks for it though!" I laughed & said, "No problem." I then told told my girlfriend, excitedly, "Oh, we have GOT to see this!" Mojo is nuts!" So, at 1:30 p.m. I take my girlfriend right down front, in front of Mojo. There's a big crowd behind me. Mojo did not disappoint. He was great. I remember he did "Tie My Pecker To My Leg" & "Drunk Divorced Floozie" about Princess Diana. Of course, I was rocking out & laughing my ass off. My girlfriend, however, was quite shy, & shell shocked. After a few tunes, I decided, for laughs, I had to turn around to look at the faces of the audience members, especially those who were also unfamiliar & shell shocked. As I was doing so, a bunch of people told me, "Turn around, Mojo is pointing at you & trying to get your attention" I turned around & Mojo gets in the mic & says, "Hey, crazy Mojo fan! Your wife wants nothing to do with crazy Mojo fan! This one is for crazy Mojo fan's wife. This one's called "VIBRATOR DEPENDENT!!!" He then bursts into the song. Of course everyone, including me, bursts out laughing, however, my poor, shy, wishing she was invisible, girlfriend (not my "wife" not that it mattered) turns five different shades of red from embarrassment. Anyway, I bought the CD from him after the show. It was a great time. Mojo is great! Anyway, take care Otis. Love your stuff & stories. Stay safe & take care

Now that's the kind of story to restore a man's faith in humanity. If Mojo had turned out to be merely life-sized, or worse, if he'd sided with the frat boys, I'm not sure the world would ever have made sense again.
I guess my Mojo story is much simpler but him playing your songs was probably my introduction to you. I’m glad he did and Big Whiskers and Sputnik Monroe are definitely two of my favorites....

Your description of the northside of Indianapolis in the '90s reminds me of southside Birmingham (Alabama) in the '70s.

Great story Otis! At some point in the early 90s Mojo was touring the midwest. In Iowa City we had a great student-run radio station and we had heard some Mojo with Skid Roper. He was playing a gig in Rock Island which was only about an hour away so we did a road trip and saw the show. Needless to say we loved it. Now I'm not sure why we thought it was necessary to drive to Illinois for the show because we knew he was playing THE VERY NEXT NIGHT in Iowa City. We spread the word and by the time the show started we had the place packed. Mojo came in and saw us, and he remembered us! Hey you guys! Last night! It was so funny and he did another fantastic show. Mushroom Maniac!

Are you the Otis his album was named after? He played a tiny venue in NH at a legion hall( only Mojo would do that!) And was selling inflatable love sheep and OTIS gas attendant shirts. Dammit,I can't find my shirt.
Haha! No, that's a different Otis, but I have that same shirt in my closet. I got it the night of this story and wore it for years. I'm not sure if it still fits as well. I guess I'm gonna have to try in on and see how it goes. : )

@@waynegilchrist1596 The world record flathead catfish was caught out of White River pretty close to where I grew up. That was a big deal to me when I was a kid and it was common to hear stories of huge catfish being spotted when White River would flood. The record was later broken, but it always stuck in my head. That was the genesis of the song and I pretty much made everything else up from there.

I happened to buy one of Mojo's cds way back in the early 90s iirc. Loved it! ("Elvis Is Everywhere" was one of several instant hits on it." Unfortunately, he's rather unknown here in Sweden so at the time I couldn't find any more of his records and moved on to more mainstream songwriters. That record I bought is probably still the only one of his that I've seen in stores around here...
Btw, how you described sounds a lot how I pictured him from the songs. If there's ever a movie Will Ferrell may be the guy to play him :)

A buddy and I had followed the Mojo Nixon and New Duncan Imperials Jagermister sponserd tour through Texas.
First showels we went to were Austin, Houston, and then over to New Orleans ., after the show they came to see who we were. Mayby they thought we were stalkers lol. We ended the night after Sharing a full bottle of Jaeger we went to a after hours dive bar and drank till 6 am.
We got to Dallas and the club they were playing was 21 and over but we were 19. NDI drummer Good Time snuck us in the back door but the manager caught us and kicked us out. While we were standing outside hearing NDI play Mojo came out the front door to Smoke a ,,,smokable rolled item... Well he asked why we were not inside and tols him the story so He brought us in and told the manager he would not play unless his friends could attend. The manager hestotaed and said we had to stand in the back and he would babysit us.. Mojo played one song and stopped during one of his in-between monologs to tell the audiance our story and saw we were held in the back.. Well between Mojo and the drunk ass crowd we ended up in front of the stage for the remainder of the show..
I forgot to mention for time-line we were 19 then and now 49.. Thats been a while and I still have the Jager bottle signed by NDI and Mojo
