Hi Andre. I found after almost two decades of using a 1.5 mm pick and wearing divots in my fretboard from my fretting hand that the thick pick was too easy to pick and it was causing my fretting hand to tense up out of frustration as it couldnt keep up and i wasnt alternate picking correctly.
About six months ago i got 0.88 and 1 mm dunlop picks. The 0.88 are ok though a bit thin but help with isolating errors in pick technique. The 1 mm are a good width for tone and speed. Ive learned when i tense up to turn that force into picking not fretting. Also, the shape of picking hand matters. The "fan shape" that Chris Impelliteri uses ive found excellent for making each note like shouting, in Chris' words its like hitting the side of a snare drum with a drum stick. 3:23 "Garden of Eden" by Impelliteri is an excellent example of Chris' technique.
This new exercise i will practice in groups of three, four, five and six notes per beat, keeping the pick direction correct for six notes involves first practicing with no metronome ive found.
Having the amp on ive found makes playing quickly faster i suspect because the mild electric current in the strings affects the muscles, in '96 i remember falling asleep while i was standing up playing a Yamaha electric at the time it felt like i was sitting in a chair. So some of the time the amp is on, other times i leave it off. I also find steel vs nickelwound strings affect fretting hand tension as they seem to be different in magnetic field/conductance very slightly, at least they feel that way, nickel strings seem easier to play fast than steel.

Great fun on using second and fourth fingers, three frets apart, doing five note sequences up and then down, using fifth fourth and third strings, its like weightlifting for the hands just what i was looking for as most of the time playing is just too easy physically and consequently it becomes very difficult for timing its easy to hear in my videos to me it feels like a car with no brakes.
So doing this exercise with metronome and varied positions is exciting!
Im going to go nuts on these ideas as the stretching is great after working hours on close chromatic scales using three, four, five and six notes per beat. Now i can focus on jumping frets for note sequences such as three, four and five though six notes for three frets apart using either first and third or second and fourth fretting fingers should prove interesting.
