So sorry you have this problem. You are right that the shaft is longer and not shorter then it needs to be. Duca, you and Roberta are doing such a wonderful job to the boat. Its going to be really really wonderful to get it finished. Roberta is so gorgeous, you are a lucky man.
Wait... you might be able to mount the shaft in a lathe and “grind“ the surface for the seal. As long as the extra length doesn’t affect your attachment points above, it could work. PS, another great video. Sorry for the problems but, problems come. You’ll get it figured out I’m sure. I hope my idea above works, it will save you a lot of time and money.
Thats what me and my dad did when we had a wooden sailing boat for tourists (7 day cruise) , just shaved it down in a lathe because the shaft was a cm too long.

I know you will overcome this "step back". Your incredible Monday positivity for your container house and this beautiful sailboat give each of us a wonderful start to each week.
Again the thoroughness and attention to detail in refurbishment re-engineering / seals etc. is outstanding, no catastrophic breakages or failures to worry about 6 months down the track from relaunching, when you are 500 Nautical miles in the middle of nowhere. The shaft will be shortened re-machined and this hiccup be something you laugh about in a years time.....All the best

OK guys you are a really nice couple and one of the very best UA-cam Channels rivaling La Vagabond. You are clean, decent and we watch you without fail. As a General Contractor l ask you do these things. 1. MEASURE TWICE CUT ONCE. Mistakes are expensive. Everybody makes em. What you do about them is what seperate the pro's from amateurs. Not being critical. 2. Buy a little tablet and put it in your pocket. Write down notes. And measurements. Let the shaft length be a lesson to you. Dont assume anything. 3. Dont over complicate a task. Seek information as you do always. No one knows everything. The secret is to know when you need help, and knowing where to find it. 4. A Sailboat, a house, a car, a bridge, a Cabinet, and the how to do's are the hard part. It takes years to learn trades. Again not being critical. You have succeeded so far where others fail. Thanks for Videos and being such wonderful kids. Really really really proud of you two. Ron and Sharon Katztributeband
I came late to your channel, half way through the boat being finished so I really love and appreciate the links to the previous video and the flashbacks. Keep up the hard work, you are both impressive and amazing.

We'll keep moving ahead, and y'all do too! Love the videos, and especially love your always positive attitudes! I'm trying to be that way more!
Cheer up guys. Everything will work itself out. Sometimes those delays are just necessary so that good things fall in place. Keep up the great work. If you don’t have footage of the build just show us around the marina and the town where you’re at. Best of wishes from Houston 👍🏼
Life has a way of reminding you things are not always what they seem, it now more about how well you recover from this small setback. guys that baot is in good hands and trust it will reward your efforts 10 times over. onwards and upwards guys.
You both are awesome! Love your passion and kindness, your pretty close.back to square one is the saying in my part of the world! Love all your videos.
I love to watch your sailboat restoration project. I've learned so much about boats from this video series. The most important lesson I've learned is that I'm never buying a boat!
Keep you’re spirits up, it’ll all be done soon enough and you will have learned many valuable lessons along the way. It’s looking wonderful so far!⛵️🌞🐬
Just a little oversight on your part. Nothing that will stop you guys. The rudder shaft will be retooled and reinstalled. The rudder will be reinstalled and you will be back in business. You guys rock, love your videos.
Your doing a terrific job & have a lot of thoughts & plans going through your heads. So mistakes are bound to happen. All one can do is to minimise them as much as possible. And hopefully never make the same one twice. It's been said in another comment below, measure twice & cut once. Personally I measure & re-measure several times before cutting, I learnt the hard way & it really sucks.
Sorry for the problem, but as always you find a solution, and one thing about your journey with the boat, you show the good and the not so good, really enjoy the experience with both of you. Always look forward to the next weeks adventure.
Well up here in the pacific northwest of the US we have a saying... "some days you eat the bear and some days the bear eats you!" That means you win some you lose some.. hard luck guys.. But keep a positive attitude all will work out right in the end.. Beside if you look at everything as a whole you really have had a smooth rebuild so far.. The way I see it we get another episode of you on the beach this way.. Being a man that has worked with his hands all of his life I enjoy watching you both work and enjoying that work.. Roberta how is the squirrels ankle is he behaving himself? You guys are such a beautiful couple.. you both remind me of myself and my wife.. partners, friends and companions for life.. carry on, be safe we send you our love and respect..
Estimating the actual length is extremely difficult if the exact length is critical. The cutting disk is 2mm thick but the cut is wider than that because of wear from the sides and whatever wobble occurred by hand movement. It would have been short by a mm or so. I consider this a blessing. You were now able to get an exact measurement by the difference. Seriously nice rudder design.
So immensely impressive that you answer everyone's questions and thoughts. I enjoy your commitment to your new boat acquisition and hope to see all of you in the water soon for new adventures. Continue to inspire with your humble way of delivering great content - saudações da Suécia.
I love your positivity! Brightended my dark day here in Norway. And we all measure wrong and spoil parts because of it. Too bad if you can't polish or turn the seal area down. Then adjust the steering mecanism or extend the square top part down and cut it to length. Have a great week!
Life's lessons are not always "smooth sailing". Learning absolutely requires mistakes, sometimes they can be edited out but they are essential. The boat looks great!
You seem to have dealt with this setback with good spirits and quite philosophically. As you said Duca, it is much easier to cut something to shorten it than to cut to make something longer. (I’m not sure if that joke translates.) Do not rush the revision. Take care, both of you. Short or long, I love your videos.
in the mariner world things go wrong but Never Give up . learn to deal with them and have faith in your Dreams . You 2 will Win and have a great Life in Home and the sailing Yacht .
How do you not fight when it is obviously so frustrating? You both are an inspiration! I hope the new weld solution does not end with the rudder falling off at sea.
nossa! se doeu em mim, o fato de ter dado errado, imagina em vcs... o trabalho que deu ate chegar nesse momento e volta do começo, não é nada fácil continuar sorrindo. bola pra frente sigo aqui torcendo por vcs.
Think about it as a good test run at least the shaft was not too short. Everything looked like it was going so well. I can understand your disappointment and possible frustration, but just think of this as a test of your ability to overcome problems. Love the video.

Thanks for the support and for the best wishes ☺️
A set back, but you understand what went wrong, and you have a solution. If this is the only issue you have on a project this size then you’re doing well! Keep up the good work guys, it’ll be worth it 🙂
Thanks for the support
DON’T be so hard on yourselves! The best laid plans of mice and men (famous phrase), means “stuff happens”. You two are fantastic and an inspiration both at work and with your relationship. Best wishes, Geoff in Vancouver, Canada.
Thanks for the support, Geoff ☺️

Indeed, Lucia. Thanks for the support
Will be watching next weeks video in Bali, sitting back enjoying a beverage or 2. Will think of you both while enjoying my shopping, swimming and touring...💖🇦🇺
💕 Have a nice time in Bali

Thanks a lot for all the tips and support, Ron and Sharon ☺️
Craftsmen, skilled labor, machinist and others are truly understated heros.
I came late to your channel, half way through the boat being finished so I really love and appreciate the links to the previous video and the flashbacks. Keep up the hard work, you are both impressive and amazing.
Welcome to our channel. Thanks for the feedback and support. ☺️
Hang in there guys! I'm in the middle of a van house conversion for a friend, that is months past our scheduled completion, so we really understand about setbacks. We'll keep moving ahead, and y'all do too! Love the videos, and especially love your always positive attitudes! I'm trying to be that way more!
Thanks a lot for the support. Good luck on your conversion ☺️
Cheer up guys. Everything will work itself out. Sometimes those delays are just necessary so that good things fall in place.
Keep up the great work. If you don’t have footage of the build just show us around the marina and the town where you’re at.
Best of wishes from Houston 👍🏼
Thanks for the support.
Sorry about the delay, but thrilled that it was already solved. Thanks for sharing and see you next week.
Thanks for the support, Dana. See you next Monday

Hehe. Thanks, Pat. We have a similar saying in Brazil that uses the number zero. Hehe
Look how far you have come and what has already been accomplished in 7 months!
💕⛵
I don't ever want to see the problem that would keep you two from smiling. Thanks for sharing.
😁👩🏼🤝👨🏻💕
I love to watch your sailboat restoration project. I've learned so much about boats from this video series. The most important lesson I've learned is that I'm never buying a boat!
If you are not passionate about it it’s a fact
Glad to hear you guys managed to fix the problem (read one of your responses) best of luck and much love to you both.
Thanks so much for the support, Zachary
Sending positive vibes to you guys. Hang in there, it's looking great!
Thanks a lot, Chris
Keep you’re spirits up, it’ll all be done soon enough and you will have learned many valuable lessons along the way. It’s looking wonderful so far!⛵️🌞🐬
Thanks so much for the support
Keep on smiling guys. Problems are there to be fixed.
😁
Just a little oversight on your part. Nothing that will stop you guys. The rudder shaft will be retooled and reinstalled. The rudder will be reinstalled and you will be back in business. You guys rock, love your videos.
Thanks a lot for the support, James. 💕
Nice to see the boat come together piece by piece👍
☺️⛵️🤗
Oh no! But the good news is, you are really learning *everything* about maintaining your new vessel!
😁⛵️ for sure we are learning a lot ☺️
You have the best attitudes . Love seeing your progress
☺️💕💕
Your doing a terrific job & have a lot of thoughts & plans going through your heads.
So mistakes are bound to happen. All one can do is to minimise them as much as possible.
And hopefully never make the same one twice. It's been said in another comment below, measure twice & cut once.
Personally I measure & re-measure several times before cutting, I learnt the hard way & it really sucks.
Thanks for the support. ☺️
Sorry for the problem, but as always you find a solution, and one thing about your journey with the boat, you show the good and the not so good, really enjoy the experience with both of you. Always look forward to the next weeks adventure.
Thanks for the support. We see you next week 💕
💕👩🏼🤝👨🏻 thanks a lot for the support. The ankle is getting better each day 💕
@@OddLifeCrafting Very glad to hear it! you just be careful and do not let a little set back get you down.. it has to happen in every project..
@@tinkmarshino thanks for the support
Estimating the actual length is extremely difficult if the exact length is critical. The cutting disk is 2mm thick but the cut is wider than that because of wear from the sides and whatever wobble occurred by hand movement. It would have been short by a mm or so. I consider this a blessing. You were now able to get an exact measurement by the difference. Seriously nice rudder design.
Indeed. It’s all good now. The problem was fixed ☺️
So immensely impressive that you answer everyone's questions and thoughts. I enjoy your commitment to your new boat acquisition and hope to see all of you in the water soon for new adventures. Continue to inspire with your humble way of delivering great content - saudações da Suécia.
Thanks a lot for the support, Mattias. It's a pleasure to us to read such nice words of encouragement of others. 💕 Saudações do Brasil
I love your positivity! Brightended my dark day here in Norway.
And we all measure wrong and spoil parts because of it.
Too bad if you can't polish or turn the seal area down. Then adjust the steering mecanism or extend the square top part down and cut it to length.
Have a great week!
Thanks for the support. It’s all good now ☺️
Life's lessons are not always "smooth sailing". Learning absolutely requires mistakes, sometimes they can be edited out but they are essential. The boat looks great!
Thanks for the support, Michael
You seem to have dealt with this setback with good spirits and quite philosophically. As you said Duca, it is much easier to cut something to shorten it than to cut to make something longer. (I’m not sure if that joke translates.) Do not rush the revision. Take care, both of you. Short or long, I love your videos.
Thanks for the support, Ann. 💕💕 have a great week
Bless you both, you keep positive and understand that things like this happen in life, you guys are so sound, love following your story.
💕💕
My favourite couple. Can’t wait to see your adventures. 🇦🇺
💕💕🤗
in the mariner world things go wrong but Never Give up . learn to deal with them and have faith in your Dreams . You 2 will Win and have a great Life in Home and the sailing Yacht .
Thanks for the support, Wayne. ⛵️💕
How do you not fight when it is obviously so frustrating? You both are an inspiration! I hope the new weld solution does not end with the rudder falling off at sea.
😞 at least there us a solution for the problem, that’s how we keep going positively. 🤗
You gotta do what you gotta do! ❤️ It will all be worth it in the end. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the support, Dalton ☺️
Hey you guys are great and always a joy to watch I’ve rebuild / refurbished three boats and believe me s😞😞t happens keep smilin😃😃
Thanks for the support, Robert⛵
Think about it as a good test run at least the shaft was not too short. Everything looked like it was going so well. I can understand your disappointment and possible frustration, but just think of this as a test of your ability to overcome problems. Love the video.
Thanks for the support, Bill
Stuff happens! As long as it’s fixed before you launch, you’re good. Love you guys.
Thanks for the support, Lydia 💕
Love watching you guys and your projects!
