Must use the medium finger and preferably the ring finger along with a pick to get that twang. Just using a pick will not deliver that chicken picking sound. Much like popping style on a bass.
Two things that helped me: 1. It is all in muting certain strings…I feel. If you let all the strings ring out you will get what you’re describing. You want certain notes, especially like walk up notes that are not your main melody notes to pop. You get this by muting, usually with your spare left hand fingers, or at the bridge with the right hand. 2. You probably have too much overdrive if it’s sounding like Rock. Even if you’re not chicken picking correctly, if your effects are set to standard country tone something is def. Wrong if it sounds like rock. Set your delay (if you have one) to the repeat like a half a second after your note, and only one repeat. Use a compressor, that is the key I would say to this tone, and set the overdrive depending what your playing. For example lot of the 90s Brent mason or Vince gill stuff set it very low, just so it starts to breakup slightly when you hit a power chord. Sometimes I can pull this off without my overdrive on. If it’s like Brad paisley stuff add some more dirt. Keep working at it. It’s wayyy harder than people realize. I hope this helps!
get rid of MOST of the distortion, use the bridge pickup, pick back near the bridge and use a fair amount of reverb and slap-back echo. that'll fix it.
Great channel with great initial content. I love the closeup neck shot! Chapter jumps would be great. Overall, I think you have a winner here. Best wishes.
Thanks for watching! Also thanks for the input about chapters. I’m still learning how to navigate recording and posting videos but I will definitely start doing that.
Wow! 100 subs in 10 days? That’s awesome! I’m only about 23 seconds into this video, but I just wanted to say that I have pretty much that same telecaster. Except mine has a rosewood fingerboard on it.. and I swapped the pearl pickguard for a black one. Lol 👍🏼
Man I’ve been there and it sucks! That guitar is actually my first “real” guitar ever. I bought it when I was just getting started after my first guitar was stolen.
Hey there Caleb, great simple , but door - opening stuff in this lesson mate. There’s plenty of places to get info these days, but the delivery is what clicks with me. Instant subscription here . Cheers from Aussie, You may have heard of some of us ? Jedd , Tommy, Keith ? 🙄 Looking forward to improving my twang 👍🏻
Strings are crazy instruments, take them licks and put em everywhere... oh yea thats the best a guitar could emulate the pedal steel which gets bends in two directions at once!
Nice start on a good looking channel. Might I add that it's nice for advanced players if you just play the idea first, just after you possibly number the licks with like: "Lick #1, Lick #2", etc. That way we can rip you off more efficiently...😆
@@CalebGuitar nice. I’ll be back. Fwiw, all three of those licks were really useful. My big struggle is getting the feel right. Like Reggie young’s major pentatonic breaks in ‘think I’ll just stay hear and drink’. When I play those lines they sound more like rock. I know it’s in the timing, but I’m struggling. Rhythm stuff, too, please. Thanks for starting your channel and good luck.
Like the content - but you did confuse me a bit with the first riff talking about Elvis and All Shook Up. I think you meant to say Hound Dog - just for then benefit of anyone who wants to hear the riff on the record!
I plan on doing several videos on gear and setup in the future. In this video I was using a Keely compressor, boss blues junior with the Keely mod, boss DD7 for a little slap back delay and the spring reverb on my fender blues junior with EL-84 tubes.
It seemed to have too much reverb, no slap-back delay, no compression, and it didn't have that "Chicken Pickin" sound I expect to hear from a Telecaster.
Yea I agree the tone was off for sure. I’m new to this video recording thing and I don’t have my guitar running into the computer so the only sound is getting picked up by the camera. Crazy thing is I have is very compressed, quite a bit of slap back and very little reverb but you certainly don’t hear that in the video. I’m learning as quickly as I can to put out better content. Thanks for the feedback and good luck on your journey!
@CalebGuitar I have one Tele with a Gibson scale I can do that bend with 10's on it but, usually just slide up a step. I guess the fact that I prefer 10's and I usually play Fender Scale, I normally only do half step bends on wound strings. I have been thinking about trying 9's.
Boston rock player wants in!
This style baffles me. I will keep trying. I learn country licks and they still sound rock.

Hang in there man we will get you there!

I know it’s all in timing and articulation, still, like you, when I play this stuff it still sounds like blues/rock. Sorta.

A gorgeous Tele with a sparkle pickguard doesn't hurt either. Great tutorial.
Haha! Thanks!
Keep teaching. We need more of this style of playing.
Thanks!
Absolutely. Haven't heard the word "fun" used along with "guitar" in thirty years!😂👍
Good stuff man! I’m in ! Gotta get the basics down!
That tele!
Man it’s been a good one. Took every dollar I had when I was 19 years old to buy it, but it’s been a work horse for all of these years.

I know right!? It’s over 320 subs now! That cherry burst was my first real guitar at 18 years old. It’s what I learned on.
Good stuff sir 👍
Thanks!
😊OK. I’m all in. I love those neck camera shots. I know that’s not easy. But it kinda brings it home. I like that twang! Thanks!
Heck yea! Thanks so much!
This is great teaching.
Small pieces to start up a toolbox of style.
I appreciate your support!
Good job on the videos thanks for starting at the beginning very helpful 😊 thanks
Thank you! Stay tuned!
Love the up close shots
Thanks so much! They are kind of a pain to video and edit but I was hoping that it would be worth it. I will keep it up.
Great lesson! I think the last lick is on the Eagles peaceful easy feeling
Yes it is! It is on tons of stuff. Real big in 60's and 70's rock as well.
Good lesson. Bending to pitch and holding while I change fingering is tougher than you make it look. Cool licks that I'll keep working on. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Great lesson, thanks
Glad you liked it! I’m going to keep them coming so spread the word please!
Subscribed. Great lesson! I am in for the ride!
Thank you sir!
Instant subscribe.. THIS is the stuff I’ve been trying to learn and I like how basic you’re starting out, as well as how you explain.
Thanks!
I am super stoked to here that! I will be posting more videos soon!
I had that model Tele. Man, I wish that I had never sold it.
Man I’ve been there and it sucks! That guitar is actually my first “real” guitar ever. I bought it when I was just getting started after my first guitar was stolen.
I hope to hear about ghost notes giving the buk buk bacaw chicken pickin sounds. The different ways to mute em and the times to add the muted notes.
Excellent lesson!! Wow
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Nice man.. doing a good job.
Thank you so much 😀
Great lesson!
Thanks!
Great content brother.
Thank you!

Man comments like this are getting a fire burning in me! Thanks for the support and the subscribe! Tommy is one of my favorite guitar players!

Yes sir! I’m working on getting them going! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the feedback! I never really thought to do that but I will in the future!
Great stuff. Any tabs?
Sorry, not yet but they are coming!

What pedals are you running to get that tone

@@CalebGuitar Thank you for your reply.
What string gauge are you using to bend the D string a full step?
I play D’addario nickel wound 10’s

would love to see a lesson on 6th chords
I can't wait to get there! Stick with me for a while. I am going to cover some more basic stuff but we are getting there before too long.
Nothing here I didn't know 40 years ago. Unless you're a total beginner, move on.
That’s the point sir.
Then what's the point of commenting unless you have a video proving how much more advanced you are?
