Yeah and even more so people forget that the whole concept of “no moving” and nmpz would have been possible only with geowizard starting it as a series which became the most interesting ones, you would NEVER see a Geoguessr tournament the way it is without him. Before him people basically knew only moving.
Agree with all of your takes on the new weekly league. The NMPZ players get the short end of the stick to put it mildly. Also, thanks for giving GeoWizard props. His content is absolutely how I came to watch Geoguessr content. Love the channel by the way.
@@kevray85so is memorising place names and phone numbers. NMPZ actually uses a lot of geography and even botany to make guesses, and regionguessing countries by vegetation soil type etc is pure geography, more so than moving.
Adding a comment about the breathing sounds, not to hate, just to highlight how important it is to get that fixed because it's truly affecting the video negatively. Thanks for the content!
GeoWizard 🐐 his contributions to the game's popularity and love are huge par none. His skills when there was not much meta or other clue knowledge known was excellent. Drove thousands of people to fall in love with the game.
It's actually really surprising it took this long. Just this year I was beginning to think Geoguessr was on a downturn and that it had peaked in 2022-early 2023 (with the wave of viral Rainbolt clips). Now I'm excited to see where this goes!
I first played Geoguessr after watching a smaller youtuber who used to stream himself editing videos, sometimes he'd play gg when taking breaks. Then a few years later, I saw Pewdiepie playing it and got back into it, after it had become pay-to-play. Just paid for one month and was pretty tired of it after that. Then I came across Geowizard's videos, I think it was only about 2 and a half years ago. That is what got me into it bigtime. Got hooked on duels in particular and looked for tips videos, finding this channel.
With other games like shooters or racing simulators I never got any good because I am lacking the dexterity and motor skills and I am not good at strategizing. Now I am too old anyway and could never be as quick on the trigger as a 17 year old. But in Geoguessr you don't need any of that, but you "just" need to know stuff. It is almost like a quiz with a bit of a more advanced user interface. And I find it cool to be able to tell the Spanish road signs from the German ones, so I am happy to learn that stuff. That is why Geoguessr is the first game that kept me engaged for years now.
I started watching through geowizard, I think with his find a random subscriber from a list sent in. Then got into GeoGuessr from there. Can’t believe he wasn’t even mentioned
I don't expect them to drop moving as their main play style for a while. I think moving is the way a lot of casual people play the game and if someone watches a stream and wants to give it a go then moving probably makes the game look more accessible.
The problem with the ordering of the rounds in the World League hadn't occurred to me before watching this - playing all three games would definitely be better to even up the three formats. I was also amused when they said how the game could appeal to parents, as I'm a parent who started playing when my son suggested we try watching the world cup qualifiers earlier this year 🙂 I don't play any other computer games and it's really lovely having a game that we can play together.
I get them leaving out GeoWizard I don't think his impact has been direct enough to bring him up in a conversation about esports directly. When doing the history of geoguessr sure he would be a big part but as far as the sports Go I mean he's just an inspiration for people that play. The one I found an excusable is that they didn't really talk about rainbolt enough, he kind of is the reason that esports has any legs he's kind of the whole thing. Even when they talked about the casters they just mentioned literally all the casters that are the worst and don't really add anything to the broadcast just because they have name recognition. I mean they're fine but if they weren't there I wouldn't miss them. But really rainbolt with his tournaments and lending his skills to the casting desk which he is an amazing Castor and the only reason that I even find the world cup worth watching.
Bruh, rainbolt himself started playing because of GeoWizard. I see what you are trying to say about the e-sport part, but without the contribution of GeoWizard there is no chance the game even gains enough popularity to become an e-sport
Strongly agree with you that 3 points for 2 wins makes no sense and they need to play the dead rubbers. I can imagine players who are desperate to win the no move game because they are much weaker at NMPZ and very likely to lose it. So if they win a close no move they get 3 points when they almost certainly would have gotten 1 point if they had lost it.
Agree that the NMPZ could be made more prevalent and world league point system should be reviewed... BUT (in all friendship) I disagree that modes should be split at bigger competition level. Being world champion should be rewarding the most complete player who wins. This should be more balanced I agree, but in Grand Slam tennis tournaments, there isn't one tournament for net players and another for baseline players. At most some surfaces that fit more one style or the other.
you should really upload reaction videos like this on your main channel, they tend to do very well on youtube. I understand they probably seem like lower effort content, but for some reason reaction videos do pretty well.
It would be cool for the nmpz players to protest somehow during the live games, a bit like RC was planning to do for the round limit but without miscomunication 😂 Something drastic to show the developpers and the audience that this format is not ok, like both playing nmpz during moving or something like that
I've been playing with my girlfriend for a bit more than a month now and for me the biggest hurdle to "understanding" the game is how the scoring works. IMO the information on scoring, and especially how duels work, is quite lacking. I've now figured out how duel damage works but it's just not obvious for a brand new player and the documentation is poor. Also, it's easy for a new player to get "stuck" in the single player "Campaign" mode. I probably would not have realized there was anything other than Campaign if it weren't for you and rainbolt's videos.
Regarding the format, I guess they are still figuring things out and I hope they will tweak it over the coming years. As the company behind the game they have to stand their ground a bit and can't just change things because some players think this is better and other players think that is better. And there are always more stakes involved, like having to make a profit, pleasing sponsors, making the game approachable to new people, keeping the viewers engaged, and so on. For me who has been here since the first Rainbold tournaments (was that 2 years ago? Or longer?) the official streams are waaaaaayyy too slow, and I always start watching 2 hours late in order to skip all the pauses and most of the "yapping" between rounds. It is just too much filler and too slow of a pace. When the Rainbolt tournaments had time limits per round and some teams weren't able to spend literally 15 minutes on a round, there was game after game after game, but on the World League you are watching 4 games in 4 hours, or something like that.
not talking about geowizard in a video about the history of geoguessr is crazy

Mrbeast Ronaldo moment
I found this game through Geowizards videos being recommended to me through gaming. Cant believe they left the largest creator out of this video.
The breathing sounds truly complete this video
they're what made me want click off the video immediately. had to check if someone already commented on it lmao
It particularly increases when zig gets frustrated about having to play moving
oops lol
The Alberta bollard in the corner behind FAU is peak interior design. Love it. 😀
16:30 super impressed that the devs managed to nerf NMPZ even more than the last world cup group stage format

NMPZ gets the short end because for fans of actual geography, NMPZ is not fun. Memorizing car and pole metas is not geography.

To be fair Oscar doesn't really allow his opponents to play moving, because he is clearly playing 4s no moving instead lol
why does fau have a giant alberta bollard in his room

Hearing that you had a CS phase is so interesting because I feel like there’s such a big overlap between it and Geoguessr for some reason.
Those are the two games I play the most. It would be interesting to see data around this.

Kinda crazy that moving is so highly valued in the World League when it was so undervalued when it came down to qualifying for it 🤨
good point
