Just quick word of of advice, it is not recommended to solder directly to the battery as over heating may reduce battery capacity or cause damage. Preferred method is spot welding. If you are going to attempt this use a suitable sized soldering iron, pre flux terminal and apply rosin core solder, soldering should be achieved in under 5 seconds as to not allow battery temperature rise above 80°c.
@@Adventure8 If you must solder to batteries the ticket is to use a lot of flux and the hottest setting you can get. A hot iron for the shortest time possible is your best bet.
Absolutely right that these cells are not for soldering! Doing this for a mission-critical application like a PLB is really quite reckless. How can you be sure that you are not latently heat damaging the cells, and that your PLB will then not function when you actually need it?! ... This should really only be done the right way, and this is not it!
Good question. Just did a Google search to find out what is "electronic witness". Was directed to www.acrartec.com. Not clear at all. I ran self test sequences, as per the user manual, after changing the battery and all was good.
@@Adventure8 The "electronic witness" counts how many times you do the basic self-test and the GPS self-test. It limits the total number you can do. When you exceed that number it will not do any more self-tests. When you have the battery replaced by ACR, they reset the counter.
JERRY RIG, not JURY RIG. JERRY RIG is a nautical term : organized or constructed in a crude or improvised manner. a jerry-rigged plan. a jerry-rigged heating system. JURY RIG - means Jury tampering and can land you in jail.
Thank you for your video, I was able to replace my battery following your steps. Great video!
Glad it helped

Thanks for the useful info. Something to note next time I attempt replacing fixed batteries.

I rear you need to do a factory reset when you replace the battery. How do you go about that?
Good question. Don't know. My unit s still working. So I guess I will be revisiting this soon, or just buy a new one with the latest tech.
Do you know how to reset the "electronic witness"? Thanks.

I'm NOT going to try to jury rig the battery pack like you've done in my PLB. I'd never trust your PLB after you've replaced the battery pack.
Fair enough.

You reckon using a 9V lithium battery would also work?
Don't really know. Not sure if lithium would hold its charge for 3 years???
@@Adventure8 Lithium batteries are extremely long lasting, and the ACR PLB comes with lithium batteries from the factory.
@@jshepard152 Thanks for letting me know.
But do you know how to use a compass and read a map?
Yep
This is not a navigation device though- is it? A paperchart and compass are not much use if you are floating 200 miles out to sea.
Does your compass or map summon Search and Rescue to your precise location if you fall and break your ass?

Lol. With a tender tushi like yours, perhaps your mama shouldn’t let you out of her sight?
