    For years I've wanted rats and last week I finally adopted two ratty babies (Xephy and Tansy) I'm totally in love with them and they're bonding with me really well. I always did the couch/blanket thing until one of my friends held my rat on the couch and it went INTO the couch. We had to fish her out, and after that she seemed traumatized and now both rats hate going on the couch..it seemed to ruin the whole thing for us. Now I have a big work table and I put boxes, cans, & old towel for burrowing up so they can climb and run all over while I'm sitting there..they love it.

They love they're little hammocks so maybe they mistook me with one of those x) I often wore the bath robe with my rats after I noticed they loved to sleep in the huge sleeves :3

      He's just a big ball of white fluff with curly whiskers. So cute. He's still a little shy, but getting his Moxie up. I call him Butch to give him a tough name for such a tiny little guy
      LOL.
      BTW, I had the two youngsters help pick out a pair of foster parents.... A spayed female and a neutered male.
      The little guys get along with the female fine, but they absolutely adore the male. Sleep together all the time.

    I got a new baby rat about a week ago (Lark). She isn't really scared of me (takes treats from my hand but doesn't let me pet her) but doesn't care to spend any time at all with me and will not let me touch her other than when she is eating. The first couple of days she liked being in my shirt but she doesn't stay there any more. I know you are supposed to hold them every day but she is so crazy and filled with energy that she will not consent to being held even when there is food. An example of her crazyness is that right now after two hours out of the cage running around the room I put her in the cage and she is chewing on the bars!
    I have already tamed my other rat (Wren) so though she doesn't want to snuggle she is not at all scared of me, the not snuggling thing is her personality. Problem is that Lark does not care about food near as much as Wren does. I don't really know how to go about taming her because I know she will not stay in a pouch and I don't think she would stay under the covers of a blanket.
    Any help would be welcomed. I know we will get there in the end but I would like that to be as soon as possible. I don't have much time for them because I am going to school all day so they only get two hours of free time everyday.

    We have had 9 rats so far and we are looking after a couple for a friend. We were a little nervous at first about how quickly they would be actively friendly but in fact we haven't had any problems at all. Rats seem to be genuinely friendly and even the shyest of our rats has been friendly.
    It is interesting how much of a distinct personality rats have. All 9 (+2) of them have been different but they have all been lovely little chaps. The only drawback to them as pets is that they don't live very long. I haven't got used to it when they die - I've been really upset every time.

      I had a similar situation. We adopted three girls and one of them who was only 7 weeks old gave birth two weeks in! I've certainly had a time trying to tame her. She already wasn't really socialized and when she had the babies she went into defense overdrive. Can't count how many times she drew blood! Thank God finally we are making some progress. She hasn't bitten me in quite a while and she actually lets me take her out of the cage for playtime every day without a battle. She doesn't like being held or touched but it's miles better than attacking me every time my hand enters the cage! Work in progress for sure. I don't blame her! I'd be freaked out if I gave birth as a teenager recently adopted in a new home with strangers too.

Set it at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes, or when they start to sizzle. Its all good eat'in! Or dip them in some flour mash, and then place them in a deep fryer.... They're tail licking good!

    Yesterday afternoon was my first time ever holding a rat... I went in the pet store to buy an outfit for my shih tzu puppy and walked out with a rat... The previous own is homeless so she didn't want to be out on the streets with Ruby so she was giving her back to the pet shop... She loves this little girl so much and I knew they would probably sell her for snake food so I took her... This video is awesome I am learning how to care for Ruby (Im still scared a little though lol)...

    Question about the blanket on the couch thing. Have you experienced that rats will fight with your toes? All my rats have done that and it can get quite wild. They never actually bit me hard, but they did really go toe to toe (lol) with my toes in a way they wouldn't with my fingers. I just find it funny and curious. I wonder if they don't realize that my toes are an extension of my body the same way they do my fingers, or if there is some other explanation.
    Getting friendly with rats is the easiest thing. I've had lots of rats and none of them have been timid. After only a couple days of a little time and patience, there should be zero issues. Rats are curious, social, smart and adaptive animals and their natural domesticated state is to explore and enjoy you and their surroundings without fear. If you're nice to them and want to be their friend, they will reward you 100%. Small tip: If you don't give them designated hideouts in the cage, like a box, the process will go much faster. It forces the rats to accept that there really is nothing to worry about and as soon as they are past that point, they don't need one anyway. Besides that, just be there and give them free access to you and that's really all you have to do.

    • @ratgirl44
      @ratgirl44  8 років тому +2

      +QualeQualeson mine love feet with socks! They are always tugging and pulling on my socks. So cute! I agree it's easier getting rats that aren't so timid. Not everyone has that option though.

      I've been having problems socializing my new boys, and I've considered removing their little house from their cage. I was worried it would stress them out, but you think it will help?

    • @QualeQualeson
      @QualeQualeson 8 років тому +3

      Esper It has helped a lot in my case. Listen, if they are fearful from the start, not stressing them some is going to be next to impossible if you want their behavior pattern to change. My rats didn't like it at first when I just put them in the armpit of my jacket and stayed out all day with them. But as scared as they were in the beginning, they became super tight with me because I was their direct source of shelter, food and everything. If you create an environment based on their current pattern, it's only logical that that pattern will not change or change very slowly. I'll say this though, there is no substitute for being able to spend time with them. If you have little time to spend, let's say only a couple hours each day, then you might as well leave their hiding places alone. If you remove something you have to replace it with something else, otherwise it's kinda pointless and cruel.

      @@jacksonns333 I’m glad you replied but sadly my rats died very early. They died in July I’m pretty sure. It’s a long story, but basically my room was too cold and I had a hammock or two in their cage, and they eventually chewed the hammock and found space in between two fabric layers and they took a nap in there. Then I went to check up on them and turns out they didn’t have enough air in there.

I couldn't take the dog Anywhere, unless the Rat was riding on her head. The Rat only went into the cage to eat or go potty. I always feed her fresh food and she was NEVER locked up in her cage. We rescued black and white "fancy rat" who showed up around our house in the Spring. He's been eating the peanuts we put out for the squirrels. He's been around the house for awhile but it had gotten extremely cold here and we decided to try to catch him and bring him inside. I've never had a rat before but love animals and currently have cats and I have raised goats and other animals.
    It's been a couple days. He will let me pet him but is scared. Do you think a rat who has "tasted freedom" can be brought around. I work from home, so have time to spend with him. The cats have seen him up close out the window a lot so they have little interest in him anymore and I will never let than near him, at least right now.
    I've always wanted a rat and he seems to have picked up. He actually came up to my husband and sat on his shoe, then went to the front door acted like he wanted to come in the house. That is why we decided to catch him. It was not hard at all. I was able to just grab his tail (which I know is not a thing to do but I had to do it to get him).
    I'm letting him just get used to being inside right now and not pushing anything.

      i know im like 4 years late but the reply you got just wasnt true and i wanted to make sure you knew that. yes, rats can have both chicken and eggs. my boys love hard boiled eggs, and will occasionally eat chicken. as long as you make sure not to give older rats(over 6 months) too much protein, you should be good. but always google before you give a new treat/food to your ratties just to be sure its safe for them :)

    Do you have any tips on picking them up? My rats eat out of my hand when they're hungry and will crawl all over me, but the moment I try to pick them up they panic, like really panic. I need two hands to grab them and most of the times I need a couple of attempts before I succeed in picking them up and getting them out of their cage in order to explore the couch with me. So I cant really take them to my practice spot outside the cage haha. and I also have a hard time getting them back once they're out since they won't let me pick them up and will just run through my entire room..

      Try to pick them up slowly. So they can see your hand and pet them gently before trying to scoop them up. try to use treats to coax them into your hand as well. It is difficult to get a grown rat out of its behavior, but with persistence and patients it can be done. Its best to handle them when they are little a whole bunch, so they get to know you.
