I like the fact it does NOT have Wireless capability. =)
It ensures:

Thank you, and yes, I do agree that for some a pure player with no wifi is going to be better suited. A lot of enthusiasts here in Asia don't seem to use a lot of the connectivity options anyways.

Sticking with Sony because all the other DAPs seem to have too many glitches. With Sony you always get quality
I'm super confused as to where this product lies in terms of everyday functionality! Can I connect this to my PC and use it as a DAC/AMP? Sorry for the ignorant question, I just don't know whether to buy this or the TA-ZH1ES. Because I will be using my headphones with my than just my PC.
I have not tried it, but the manual for the WM1A says you can connect to a PC and play music files located on the PC.
Do you still use the WM1Z? If so, remember the noise (click-click) between tracks that are of different formats? i.e. DSD64 to FLAC, DSD128 to DSD256, etc. How can they be silenced? thanks,

Can you plug a balanced headphone and a regular headphone in at the same time for dual listening on the Sony NW-WM1?
to be honest basically any DAP can did that job, just depends on what kind of a headphone it is, WM series can put out a lot of power to easily drive an high power HDPH but why not go check the spec just to be sure, maybe you can get an idea of how much power can it put out with two headphone outputing

Ok i know im poor and dont make a lot of money. But there is no way listening to music should be so expensive. Yes i can shut up and get the least expensive one and be happy. But this is just stupid and tells a lot about the growing difference between rich and poor people.
Music is expensive because you are getting the quality you want cheap music quality suck
high end grade material, design , features, and dont forget this DAP would not be every person choice consider it was design for audiophile who love extreme sound quality more than anything, not every person can notice the difference of sound quality until they touch the high quality music device and have the ability to realize it .
And that means less consumer would interested toward something like this, they have the right and market strategic to put them on higher price.
Sure you can probably found some device that is not expensive and still put out satisfying music to your ear but out there for those "capable ones" ,this is the right medicine to them
for the record, this is not the most expensive music setup that a person can put out with, A Good music experience has no price on them, they are priceless its not something you should compare with those paper......Young ones

These beautiful mini sound players are so good and advanced! that even now: more than 4 years later after these machines were released (and this video was done) not even Sony or any other manufacturer has been able to build better mini sound machine! 👍
I just bought the NW-WM1A with Meze 4.4mm Balanced Cable and Shure SE846 IEM’s just before the New Year. I was wondering if Sony’s newer models were any better or not, but I couldn’t find anything.
I was pretty sure that I was going to save up for a 1Z later this year. When I went to Campfire Audio, to try out their IEMs, they had also brought out for me the 1Z to listen through. That thing weighs heavier than a brick. I swear! It was great, but just too heavy for my intended us. Looking forward to a 1A eventually. :D
Whoever complains about wifi/android incompatible... guys, you have cellphone. And your ears are nothing better than an ash tray for cigarettes.
Leave us alone, with high quality hifi experience. A thing that you can heritage to your kid, without needing of any upgrades EVER. I hate upgrades of anykind! apple androids whatever upgrades guarantee to downgrade your beloved stuff.
Thanks for your review which helped me decide to buy a NW-WM1A, which I am using with a Sony MDR-1AM2 headphone. I'm thrilled with this combination. The OS of the player automatically updated when I connected to my PC, and seems much improved compared to your description, except I can't find a way to turn on the frequency animation you had on display. I'm very happy with the 1AM2 headphone, which seems to have a great balance of bass, mids and highs, and has Sony's balanced cable. The clarity is amazing. I have seen 2 different reviews that rate the 1AM2 above tha Z1R. I would like to see your review of this headphone. Also, I have a question about the High Gain setting. In my case, I can get plenty of volume either way, and I doubt I hear a quality difference. Is there an advantage to using high gain if my headphones don't need it? I'm thinking I should leave it off to avoid setting the volume too high.

Just get a Sony WM-D6C or an AIWA HS-F1 ... then you have a really GREAT device! I have an AIWA HS-F1 myself and it is just awesome.
If the sonic difference is minimal or the lower priced one is better, why would someone pay almost 2k more?

I’m a musician and if I could afford it I would prefer to show my music or music I’m interested in, in high fidelity on this with some high end headphones rather than in a car or on a phone.
have you tried the sony zx300? If so how does the zx300 compare to the wm1a in sq?
@@bryang9601 sound is supposed to be pretty close, WM1A has more power but the thing that sets the WM1A apart is the bigger screen (really love album art and the ZX300 has a fairly small screen) and the overall build quality. Sure the ZX300 is nice enough but the buttons at least on mine felt cheap and not worthy of such a high price item. That's why I returned my ZX300 and have a WM1A on the way :-)

@@nayuki2020 don't know about you but 550€ is high price for me for what is essentially a good mp3 Player. They feel more akin to a 200€ device, especially the buttons. Much smaller than the WM1A though
@@drphilphil1 Isn't WM1A about 2x the price of zx300? Ofc you can call both of them to be expensive, but you know... 2x is 2x.. If someone has budget to buy zx300, wm1a willl be clearly out of range. So the feel on the buttons won't make any big imapct on the final buying decision.
@@nayuki2020 I got a WM1A for 200 bucks more than zx300 and for me the additional storage bigger screen and more premium feel was worth it. Plus in EU you can only get zx300 in silver which I was not a fan of

It would be great to know what the shortcomings of the newer zx300 is against the wm1a. Hope to see some sort of video of that in the future or maybe just a short reply here.

Why is 200hr recommended playback time?
I've been wanting to know the answer to this also! Will performance possibly be effected?
Apparently this is something to do with the recommended 'burn in' time for the electronic components for the headphone sockets. Sound signature changes slightly and at approx 200 hours it is deemed that it will not change any more. Must also be done for each socket separately - i.e. 200 hours for each. Hope that helps.

Does the volume limit for EU models result in low volume when driving Sony Z1R Headphones?
Yes, it also lowers SQ imo. Invest 15 minutes and uncap it, well worth your time.

The sony nw-wm1z supports larger micro sds, I have one with 1TB micro sd card. It works flawless.
i am thinking to buy the 1a, but where do you download those flac these days? surely itunes music is too small for the 1a, thanks

wifi does not add upgradeability :P sorry but the weird stuff you say makes you not a competent reviewer. also your terminology for the sound makes no sense, watched this and still have no real idea of how they sound.
That Lotoo thing looks absolutely horrendous. I don't care how it sounds, I just can't stand looking at it for even a second. Hopefully it's gone now in 2019. Back to the Sony, the WM1Z is way overpriced in comparison to the WM1A.
I have a chord mojo with a Note 4 as host player combined with what ever interface takes my fancy - the Note is strictly a player not used as a phone. The question begs - are these two Sony or any DAP a better option that mine? the Note screen, processor and Android based performance seems far superior to these DAP's for far less price; the Mojo is also more than satisfactory.
Good review - you thought about just doing your reviews on an open table? you could still have a minimal look which is nice but without the boxed in feeling.
Mr2pint indeed, the stack is certainly always an elephant in the room, though I've read arguments for both sides. Good point on the table...I may do that shortly (though there will be delays as I am about to move).
AK380 is more insane price...

Not by much and only $300 more for the AK380u! If I purchase one of these TOTL DAP, I would purchase the Lotoo Paw Gold Diana Edition - Mod. The prices of these 3 DAPs will be north of $3k but the Diana Edition is more powerful and run the Sennheiser HD800s with ease. I'm lucky enough to test out both the AK380 and the Diana Edition, and love the sound of the Diana Edition especially when it paired with the Senn HD800S. The AK380u needs more volume when pair with the HD800s.
All A&K stuff are overpriced. And they are overrated. That build quality plays tricks on the listener. LOL.
The case sucks!!!! looks cheap and not ergonomic, a serious shit!. For the money I expect something better!

Wrist strap is good on sony devices, because of accidental drops and saves it from hitting the floor since coated in gold.
If you buy portable equipment in that price range you are just a massive hypebeast... I mean they don't even drive high impedance headphones...

I love my Sony NW-WM1A for Bluetooth and battery life, but nothing I have tried beats the Lotoo Paw Gold Diana I recently acquired.

Rafiqur Rahman Rony the sound is completely different to an iPod,more soundstage and clarity of individual instruments are more pronounced that’s my experience anyway , especially high resolution music

I noticed that the clear audio+ technology as well as the VPT acoustic engine both of which are present in ZX-2 is missing from these two models.Does this make any difference in sound quality compared to ZX-2? Does both have a good spacious sorround sound compared to ZX-2?

The amount which I will have to pay for the duty will easily get me a ZX-2 ,so you can understand my difficulty. Is it worth purchasing the 1z only for the sound quality? so I request you to help me out .

Arijit Dey the sound quality of both are also the same, I listen to both of them.the only difference to me is just the body copper gold plated and memory space. Is just like comparing zx1 to zx2 they sound the same but zx1 don't have external memory Space and no streaming,why the other do. Just go for 1a but if you need more space and you have more money,than go for 1z.
i think my Fiio X5 3Gen is better than those Sony's!

Can you power the Sony MDR-Z1R with the Sony NW-WM1A nicely or would you rather have an iPhone 7 Plus and Sony PHA-3 combo (which has more power in balanced mode)?
Checked the currency xe and there is pretty much no price difference in Singapore dollars and US dollars.
does it play crysis ?

This thing cannot sound 6 times better (6 times the price) than my Onkyo dp-x1. In fact I doubt it sounds as good as ... at all. So it is a rich kids showtime gadget.
