CITRUS Pruning Tip for MORE FRUIT

- If you are growing citrus, it is important to check for any branches growing below the graft union and remove them. These “suckers” are from the rootstock. They will take energy away from developing fruit.
Because most citrus is grafted onto rootstock, the fruit you want the tree to produce will only come from branches above that graft line.
The rootstock type is chosen for desirable growing characteristics such as size, frost, or drought resistance, not for the fruit. Removing suckers will increase the energy available to the tree (more fruit!)
If the branch is larger than the one in this video, use clean, sharp pruners to remove it.

The rootstock will produce fruit. It will also produce a super hardy tree that can grow bigger and use as another graft for another variety or the same variety as a backup. But your citrus rootstock is a trifoliate hybrid of a type of citrumelo, citrandarin or citrange. The rootstock won't produce the same fruit as the graft type you purchased

Thank you! I put all 3 of my citrus in the ground earlier this year too. I was wondering if I should/could get rid of a few branches that sprang out from almost nowhere. I'll pay extra attention to the root stock!

And another helpful tip. Citrus trees like the top part of their roots exposed. For aeration needs! And helps keep Fungicides at bay
That piece you removed, could I duplicate and use it solely as rootstock? Later I can graft a Persian lime or other variety?
You sure can. I have rooted citrus by cuttings and have been successful. The channel Fruitmentor provides a lot of insight on cloning citrus by cuttings + grafting. You could also air layer the cutting and graft it at a later time.

No, it’s garbage. It will grow very sour fruit with tons of seeds and giant thorns.
