Even the announcements of this coaster are amazing, how could it get even better? Also thank you for the back shot into the hall, it looks incredibly cool
Yes BUT it can have an unexpected effect (and that's the reason why in many parks, automated messages about evacuations aren't themed) : it scares the hell out of someone. It's a real factor if panic for people to be stuck in a ride (and thanks to many media outlets who uses it. Okay but seriously, The Smiler is my absolute favorite ride ever and Alton Towers is my favorite Park as well! And i am amazed to see how much they do to ensure security and getting all that stuff to repay for the trouble is absolutely mind blowing! In a park here in germany i went on a ride with friends and just as it started one of my friends seats just deicded to open up. And that coaster was something like Nemesis, alright? So me and other friend had to hold third friends seat closed - it was absolutely terrifying. But of course when we got out the seat would be completely fine again so no one did anything about it.
John Wardley would be so pleased his ride is safe and that the precautions stopped the ride before something worse could potentially happen. It's something i have on my rollercoaster bucket list, to get at least one ride of the Smiler. Glad you got free tickets mate, must have been really boring just sat there like a lemon for two hours
If i go to alton towers this year i want to go on the smiler... But i might be to small? Or to young? Im under 10. But my dad said i should be big enough for The Pepsi Max at Blackpool!!!! Yass brah
So I heard that the staff on this ride wear earplugs because of the music. What kind of smiling advocate blocks out the theme of joy? I'd love to be there and hear the music all the time! Might even laugh along or dance a little.
There's no way that can happen, the system physically will not let a cart go if there's already a cart occupying the next section of track. If you know about the Smiler accident you'll know that the ride operators overrode this safety feature as they believed all the other carts were at the station and not on the track and so treated it as a system error
I was on it the other day and it almost stalled on the 9th loop. I would of been stuck if it did because it stopped for a split second. I'm glad the staff were nice though.
It's designed to be a hang-time ride where it almost stalls within the loops in order to make them last longer, giving more thrill to the ride. It does so in a safe manner, and it won't stop up-side down
the ride broke down bc it is a safe ride, it stopped bc of the safety feature, if a cart is too close and hasn't completed its course yet, it will stop the cart nearest to it and hold it until the other cart gets far enough away so the stalled cart can can continue onwards (the second cart involved in the crash in 2015 stopped bc of the safety features at the top of the lift hill but the mechanics over rode it and sent it down causing the collision) it could also be because the fail-safe/safety feature detect something wrong with the cart or the tracks
I don’t know how to start this comment soo here I go When you get off the smiler you have to walk down the stairs to get out so I fell down the stairs because I was stupid and I ended up not being able to walk so they got a wheel chair and they helped me on and they took me behind the smiler ride and there was a pathway. Not always the reason, and besides that wouldn’t require the ride being evacuated, it was more likely a technical issue and in which case, the safety systems did their job and stopped the ride. With every ride (not just The Smiler), there’s always potential technical issues that can arise, and in many cases an evacuation is required for safety precautions. What happened before with The Smiler was 2 members of staff overriding these safety systems, and not realising there was a train stuck on the track. Accidents like that are very, very, very rare and unfortunately even now that a few years have passed, people still make a fuss over every single ride that stops for a routine issue like this, especially at Alton Towers and especially for The Smiler. In many cases it is for cameras, phones or loose items being in your hand, but as they evacuated the ride and had test dummies in one of the cars in the station, I’d say that it wasn’t to do with the camera. Kudos to Alton Towers though for offering free tickets and fast track tickets for the inconvenience - they didn’t have to do that, but the fact that they did I feel is a very nice touch from them personally
Dan McEvoy I believe the manager said it was something to do with the block section breaks. So either the ones the train stopped on, or the ones before the station.
Nexaini Could have been the ones before either set of lift hills, or the ones before or at the station. Either way, the safety system did it’s job & stopped the ride. Good to see Alton Towers very proactive on this, even when we went last year and the queue line was evacuated, the staff were helpful and reassuring the public that the ride will be back up and running again as quick as possible, and about 30 mins later test cars were back flying round the track again. Credit to Alton Towers for offering something back as compensation. Did you get the chance to get back on the ride afterwards?
It's actually bullshit because say if you were stuck on the chain lift hill for 1 hour all they will give you is 1 free food or a shit pass for 1 person only once

These incidents can happen all the time and are benine when treated correctly. An incident like the 2015 one is really unlikely. There is no such thing as 100% secure BUT many park already had mesures to prevent the 2015 accident (like evacuating the ride even if not needed when there's an estop) and Alton towers do apply these now.
