    Can you install HA as the main OS on a Mac Mini if you don’t intend to use the machine for anything else?

    Hi! , I was wondering on doing something differently but installing dsm 7.1 qnap operating system on a 2014 i5 2.3 Ghz Mac Mini.What do you think? Nice video !!!!!!

    Cool one!
    Considering that the HASS shall be running 24/7 - what is the power-consumption of the MacMini? With the current energy-prices, a 1W continuous load equates to ~Eur. 5 per year. Would you please measure the average power over a 24h period? Thanks!!

      I had a chance to test it today with my very basic energy monitor. I can't tell it being 100% accurate, and I think the instructions gave it +/- 1.5W. During the first boot, it peaked 40 W (only for a few seconds). And after starting the HA under VM, it again briefly peaked around 35 W.
      I have only one transceiver for the keyboard + mouse. I only installed a few add-ons, and currently I dont have any complicated automations. TV is always connected, but closed. it says 12 W, and time to time it goes to 13W. Temperature of the environment is 20 C. So probably it will change depending on the temperature.
      It is not really like a Rasp pi for its power consumption, but I think performance improvement is really significant.

      @@makersfunduck Thanks! It is a better-performing and "prettier" solution, for sure. For someone with solar panels, the calc. is ~ Eur.1 per watt (13 ct. per kWh); Eur 4 per watt without panels (~50ct. per kWh). 50 bucks per year for smooth HASS isn't a bad deal, I suppose...

    Hi! Nice video :) I was wondering on doing something similar but installing Proxmox on a 2012 i7 2.3 Ghz Mac Mini, but I'm worried of it being too old and not being reliable in the long run... (for instance failing randomly at some point) I was debating between that and a Beelink Mini PC with the 12th gen N-100 Intel CPU... What do you think?

      I think a i7 microprocessor would be enough for proxmox. it should provide better results than an Intel atom processor. you can check processor comparison websites for a better overview.

      aspecialy if you are using esphome which i am the speed is much faster to compile on x86 then the raspberry pi

    Nice! How much power does the MacMini use?

    • @makersfunduck
      @makersfunduck  Рік тому +1

      it depends on which version of the homeassistant installed. I made a decent comparasion for this here:

    I'm doing something wrong probably, but the cheapest Mac Mini that goes soon in my country costs 50€ and there's still one day to the end of auction. Most go for 100€, so I don't know where you have minis for 25€.

      Mine was a little old, and cdrom was not working. Also I believe prices are regional thing. If you can't find cheap ones, used Thin Clients are also do a good job.

    About to take delivery of a used hp elitedesk 800 g2 i5 6500T with 16gb of ram and 240GB of SSD. Might ditch the SSD in favor of something bigger.

      sounds great. can you share the power consumption if you have means of measuring it? I am curious.

    • @kevinrtres
      @kevinrtres Рік тому

      @@makersfunduck See Andreas Spies' channel. He said something like 11-14W at idle for the 35W 6500T - basically all the T cpus.
      I also saw the same on some one else's channel but for the life of me I cannot remember what that channel is. He showed exactly how he did his measurements - and Spies used an expensive power meter to get his measurements.
      If you have to have a really low power consumption then you are also going to be restricted to lower performance, except of course if you pay a lot more money for the latest very thin structure CPUs.

    It's quite interesting! I found a Fujitsu Esprimo Q920 for 75€ and a Mac Mini from 2014 for 50€. The Fujitsu is slightly faster but looks like shit.

      But a Mac Mini 2009, that's a Geekbench score of 400-500. A Pi 4 is 600-700. A Pi 5 about 1600.

    didn't work. sick of all these videos not working. Very confusing about installing docker. You said that you included written instructions but I don't see them.

      Where did you stuck? written instructions are already in homeassistant webpage, and they are very well doumented. www.home-assistant.io/installation/
