Turning the windions into hair and giants was a clever idea.
I love the idea of the winions whispering things like "never know who you can trust" and "sometimes sneaking is a must" into the ears of the crew, involving themselves in planting thoughts of opening the bag in their heads and making things harder for Odysseus on purpose.
Sneaking?! Gosh, I thought that they sang “sometimes singing is a must” but sneaking makes more sense

@@austinthesecuritygaurd7630 it is both depending on the verse. They tell Odysseus to kill if needed, and the crew to sneak to the bag later on.
"Never know who you can trust" was referring to Aoelus themself the entire time.

ahh 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer' he already does keep his men close but the one who opens the bag is his closest friend therefore his enemy
Odysseus' main flaw throughout his story is hubris.
He brags to Polyphemus, revealing his name for no reason just so that Polyphemus knew who beat him (and Polyphemus then prays to Poseidon to kill 'Odysseus' rather than 'Nobody'). When they sail past the sirens, he decides that he alone can resist their charm and doesn't need to wear earplugs, because he wants to know what they're singing about (admittedly, he does still tie himself to the mast, but it was still a needless risk he took because he believed that he was smart and strong enough to handle the consequences).
Here is no different. In the original myth, he just assumes that the task of keeping the bag closed is 'too easy' and 'beneath him' and doesn't come up with a plan to make SURE it stays closed. Instead, he just keeps watch over it because 'of course the great hero Odysseus could never fail a task this simple'.
He actually makes it 90% of the way home (they can see Ithaca) before his men open the bag in the original and the only reason they open the bag is because they're never told what it contains, just that they aren't allowed to open it (and they start wondering if it's some great treasure from the gods that their great leader wants to keep for themselves). Then, the winds blow them back to Aeolus, who refuses to help them again because he thinks Odysseus must be hated by the gods to have the end of his journey so cruelly snatched away from him.
All of this is to say that I really like this interpretation of their interaction with the brewing resentment between Odysseus and the crew and the almost nonchalant way he accepts Aeolus' challenge.
When thinking back on it, Polyphemus would only remember “nobody punished me for my act of wrath” and hence would only be crueler in turn, in that case Odysseus’ mistake was believing the cyclops would have any sort of sense or reason to change his ways, rather than instantly seek retribution despite the fact that Odysseus was the victim of his unreasonable wrath. A common theme in many characters in this story is arrogance, some people are punished by it, others are instead rewarded for it. Ody is, unfortunately for him, the former of the two
I love how you draw Telemachus as a boy, in other animatic people forget he would technically be not fully 20-21 so I assume he would be 10-14 when this is all happening
he was 21 or so in the story not the musical tho thats cool..

if the captain stayed awake for 9 days straight I would think that is evidence that he truly believes in what he is saying, like seriously just wait till you get home, once you are on land the storm would probably still be devastating but you can't be flung far away.

I love how you didn't give Telemachus much detail to his face, considering it would make sense that Odysseus wouldn't know what his son looks like grown up, only what he knew from when he left, when Telemachus was a baby.
Did Aelous give Oydsseus that dream just to be a dick? If so, I'm not sure if I should be annoyed or impressed with that level of pettiness.
No, Ody hasn't slept in 9 days straight. It can literally kill u if u dont sleep especially for that long, plus ull start hallucinating cause u haven't given ur brain to basically recharge urself
This song and Thunder Bringer had people thinking Penelope's voice be a trick by the gods. Why is that an idea for you here? Is it to give a more concrete justification for her presence, because it just being Ody's thoughts doesn't seem valid enough?
Odysseus learned a hard lesson. He should have relied on his best asset to win this game, his cunning. He was never the model of Greek Fortitude. What he should have done is used some trickery like have multiple decoy bags.
Honestly he didn't even need trickery, all he had to do was say that the bag needed to stay closed for their journey, and once they're back home it can be opened.

@LilacDoodle505 my niece is two and has listened to the song so much that she "sings" along to it and even hums the music! I haven't shown her the whole musical, just this one because I feel like a lot of the content isn't appropriate for her and I'm not her parents to dictate that lol, but she LOVES this song and I always show her this animatic because she loves it too

Whenever I listen to this song, I've always been confused by who's voice it is that wakes him up. Is it Athena still near but hidden? Is it his wife in his dream?
I think it's really just his inner voice or his own determination to keep the bag closed. Some creative liberty has been taken so it doesn't reallyyyy make sense... but think about this, does it even need to make sense when it adds so life to the song?
The voice is his wife, though it's his conscious speaking to him in the voice of his wife
I've always interpreted it as the subconscious being aware of the surroundings around you and it changing his dreams. You've ever heard of going to the bathroom in your dream and then turns out you did irl or how the way a dream ends is mimicking something going on around you when you wake up. and its a dream of his wife

Whether Odysseus knew or not, Poseidon needed the winds to make waves. A reason poseidon could not harm him, or those nine days.

The desgins for te characters, although especially aeolous, are astoundingly amazing. I appreciate all of the work you put in, the close-ups are impressive. It is quite the ambitious project. Mah soul is overwhealmed and just I can’t rn I can’t even word properly (I only managed this far because I had to retype and to calm my heart). First of all, THE DESIGNS OF AEOLUS AND PENELOPE (AS SAID BELOW) I AM SHOOKETH. I think this is my favorite Aeolus design I have seen up to date. You have gone above and beyond. Just ahhh and the Winions, their personalities (especially the one on the end, or the third one, who seems most mischievous). The facial expressions are just so much fun, especially when he sees the vision/dream of his wife, he looks so relieved and his eyes. Mah heart. Just overall, I cannot with how it just was so good. It’s not perfect persay within some regards, I mean it’s hard to find something “perfect” for anything but What it is perfect is the clear beautiful creation this is. Like ohhhhhhh mah soul, it is such a good representation of the song.

Yes in greek mythology Aoelus is a male, but for the sake of the musical originality pretty sure Aeolus is genderless & can take form in any gender.

I love this animatic! I’m pretty sure Aeolus is supposed to be masculine or at least Gender Neutral, though. (I know they’re voiced by a woman, but Odysseus specifically refers to him with masculine pronouns and title in the song prior. “We’re in the home of the wind God”, “I’m gunna climb to the top and ask him for a hand!”)
That being said, I still LOVE the creativity of the Aeolus design here. Super cool.
while i get that, most of the gods had no solid gender unless it was actually based in their identities or had a pair (ex. hecate, hestia, leto being fem cs they are about fem aspects (maiden, crone, mother) or artemis, athena, or hera cs conversely they had apollo, ares, zeus.) so aelous tends to be depicted either way.
edit. plus god tends to just be a baseline term. like how one calls humanity mankind or how people say 'dude'. its not really gendered anymore. goddess is just used as a 'this is definitely a woman and nothing else' type beat.
that only adds to the chaotic nature of Wind

Instead of staying awake for 9 nine days he would of been better off staying awake for a day or two then pretending to fall asleep, catch them in the act and execute them for insubordination to send a message. A darcker approach sure but it would of been more effective if he did it a few times since they would never know when hes really asleep or pretending to be ti set another trap.
Considering that he had just lost 50 men and polities to the cyclopse, and also just not wanting to kill his own men, odysseus wouldve never done this. Also odysseus is a genius, staying awake for 9 days wax his only option, as soon as he heared the treasue rumor he already knew his chances were slim but now they were zero.
@Blossomy77 it wasn't his only option nor was it his best just the one he chose since he didn't want to kill anyone. Just like he didn't kill the Cyclops. And yeah I know he never would used any method that included killing his men but doing so would of ensured no one would of opened the bag.
Guy odysseyus at this time can't kill so that does not work
@David-fp9hi yes I am aware he wouldn't kill them, never said he would at this point in time. But it would of still been a more effective method if he was willing to kill at this point in the story.

Because they can never open it, as even if they're back in Ithica it'd still cause havoc and destruction. Besides, at this point the crew doesn't really trust Odysseus and might not believe him.

I love this although im still confused why everyone always uses clouds for Aoelus(?) because she is the goddess of wind, and clouds are made of water, not air, but its still amazing nonetheless.
How does one depict a character's associations using an invisible theme? They live on a floating island and are associated with storms/gales, so the cloud imagery is probably as close as possible, unless you just draw whisps, which are still cloud-like anyway.
I just had another thought...why is Aeolus portrayed as a woman if Aeolus is the God of the wind, meaning Aeolus is a man not a woman, and Aeolus has a wife and 6 sons and 6 daughters and im not mad that they gender swapped Aeolus I just wish someone would make Aeolus from EPIC, when they make animatics that they would add a male wind spirit which would be the spouse and than add the 12 kids, plus the 4 winds (north, south, east, and west) that Aeolus was tasked to protect at all cost.

You should watch both.The Voice actor is female, so the gender in the Epic the Musical verse is probably female. Epic the musicalc hanges plenty of others tuff(The battle against Polyphemus was far less cool in the book. ) And yeah, I havent had the chance to read the full odyssey or iliad (YET!!!) only parts,but he was an old male god who was just kinda nice. But odysseous crew was fucking stupid. The musical relaly helps show the crew as being somewhat less stupid.

Aeolus is a male mortal king in the myth, but in the musical a female goddess. The musical changes some things for the sake of its own story.

Yup, in the orginal mythology they are male but the musicals actor was female, as far as I
ve been most aeolous have been female, although not all, due to said actor.

@@GreatSmallestPuddle For the auditions, some parts had gender neutral casting. The creator just wanted the person who had the best voice and best fit the role. The person chosen did amazing.
