- The Model Year 2022 (MY22) TERN Vektron is now available with the Bosch Gen 3 Performance motor. This motor has 65 Newton Metres of torque which is perfect for getting you those steep hills.

Nice. Very good explanation of torque 👍 My HSD performance line motor has 65nm torque, love it, but if it had come in the stronger Cargo line I would’ve bought that instead, for more power/speed up big hills. We pootle up them at 4mph loaded up 😂
This is the best folding ebike yet !!! But only negative as it's most expensive £4100 !!!!!
I just picked up a S10 Gen1 for $1100 with only 150 miles in excellent condition. Purchased for my wife as she feels uncomfortable on a standard 26” wheel bike. I think it’s a fantastic fun bike to ride! May get one for myself!

I like these bikes but in the flesh what struck me the spagetti of TIG welded hefty frame and rack elements, they do look strong though

Thanks for the great review Andrew and Form + Design team. Do you know if that walk mode is available when the bike is folded? Like if I wanted to bring it in to a super market instead of locking it outside. Can I put it in walk mode if it's folded down?
That’s a good question. Unfortunately you can’t use the walk function when the bike is folded. When the walk function is activated the pedals turn with the motor and the pedals can interfere with the frame when folded
That’s a question I have. I do not like leaving my bikes unattended even when locked so if I am going to a supermarket with the bike I would want to take it inside with me.
In all the times I have ridden my bikes I NEVER leave them out of my sight even if they are locked. It’s just too easy with a strong pair of bolt cutters to steal a bike although fortunately I live in a very low crime area but I still would be very hesitant to leave a bike unattended.
I should have mentioned in the previous response that you can roll the bike when it is folded. All TERN folding bikes can be rolled when folded. The eBikes however cannot be powered when folded. Check out some of my other videos on the non-electric folding bikes. In those videos you'll see the folded bikes being rolled. The trick is to extend the seat and tilt the bike back towards you and roll it in front of you. You can't do it the other way because the pedals will rotate backwards and stop the bike when they hit the frame. Rolling the bike in front of you (forwards) doesn't rotate the pedals.
I wonder about the low-hanging small derailleur sprocket. Is it exposed to possible damage, say when folded and placed in a train luggage-rack? Also, it looks so near to the ground...
Fair question. I don't think it is anything to worry about. All the TERN folding bikes (except for the BYB) have the same setup whether they are eBikes or not. In the twelve or so years that we have been selling and servicing TERN bikes we've never seen one with this problem. Take a look at the various times I rode these bikes on the dirt road to Mt Kosciuszko. There were plenty of rocks and stones that might have been a problem, but the bikes all made it there and back with no damage. So I'm not saying that this can't happen. I'm saying that it has shown itself to be something that is not even on the radar.
I use this bike around NYC. It does 20MPH. Plenty fast. Any faster I’ll kill myself. I’ll probably get run over anyway. It goes up the hill at the North end of Central Park like a breeze when a lot of non e-bike riders have to walk much of it. 😝 It’s pretty great for doing groceries. I refuse to shop at any supermarket that doesn’t let me bring it in without folding it. 😡 Many allow it though sometimes I have to embarrass them by pointing out how full of crap they are pretending to care about carbon emissions. 😏 You can fit the bike in a car pretty easy too. As well as any elevator, subway cars, your apartment etc… I love it!
I have been an avid recreational cyclist for many years although I switched to hiking about a year ago.
Been thinking about selling my three non-E Bikes and buying my first (!) e bike and like what I see from the Vektron S10. I want to go to REI and check one out in person with the goal of integrating e-bike rides into my hiking and weight lifting exercise routine.
I live in a pretty hilly area of So Cal and as a senior citizen I think I will need some pedal assist to deal with the hills. There are lots of good hiking trails nearby and I am wondering if you can take the Vektron S10 off road and ride it like a mountain bike (?). That would be great if possible.
There is a difference between riding a bike on a relatively smooth dirt track/road and riding off-road on a trail. These bikes are definitely not designed to be ridden in places where you would traditionally ride a mountain bike. Mountain bikes are built tough in order to take the punishment. It is true that I have ridden several of these on dirt tracks and made videos of that. I would caution however that these bikes are designed, first and foremost, to be ridden on paved surfaces. Of course they can be ridden on smooth dirt tracks but you would want to clean the bike thoroughly afterwards and limit the bike to only smooth tracks. The road that I took the bikes on to Mt Kosciusko (Australia's highest mountain) is not so smooth and I would not make a habit of doing that often with these bikes, even though they showed no signs of damage from our video making, chances are you will damage this type of bike if you were to ride on those types of roads often.
I hope that helps. You would have to assess whether you are taking these bikes on rough or smooth terrain. If the terrain is rough, and you would be doing that kind of riding often, then I would recommend getting an eMTB (electric power assisted mountain bike). I have done a video on that as well.

These bikes are certainly optimised to be used with power assistance. Having said that, this bike has the Bosch Gen 4 motor which makes it much easier to ride without power than older generations. The 20" wheels are of no consequence. If anything they make it easier than bikes with larger wheels. The gearing compensates for any difference in wheel size and you do get a torque multiplier with smaller wheels, even if you don't have power assistance.
