Mature Ash groves are the most magical places because unlike the Beech, the Ash allows lots of light through to the forest floor and supports many many lifeforms around it. In Norse mythology, the Ash is seen as the creator of the universe and is known as the Yggdrasil. Irish monks were amongst the earliest settlers in Iceland, and Ashes in Iceland and Ireland have the same DNA.
I honestly don't believe the trees are in real trouble. Maybe Ash that has been planted in sub-optimal environments, or simply non-native Ash. Modern humans can get very scared by change because they don't learn the history of the world, the ways of the world. In our panic and ignorance we make stupid deductions and predictions and even give unwise council.
Its clearly a much bigger problem than you state. Ash die back is not confined to poorly planted or non native trees. Look around and you'll see the extent of damage.
Brilliant series this. Loved every one of them. Aengus is fantastic. Beautifully shot and edited too Charlie. Fair play.
It's so nice getting to see a video with healthy ashes, practically every ash tree in my area has dieback and it's a sad sight
It's everywhere now pretty much because we are getting more heavy wind storms now due to climate change it spreads much easier.
I enjoyed and was saddened by the Ash tree's predictament. Ty for the info Donegal County Council.
