I just received the no-name machine in the mail yesterday and I was up until 3am altering 3 items from my closet. I'm 56 and I've only sewn 1 other time back in 1994.
You have my vote! I'd love to have a Singer that looks like the antique machines. I have the original Featherweight sewing machine with the carrying case and all the attachments and I love it! The only thing is that as I get older the harder it is to carry it from place to place. It would be fun to have a new old fashioned Singer with zig zag stitches.
So agree! Really wish Singer would put an updated Featherweight with standard and decorative stitches in different colors. I'd snatch up a green turquoise one immediately. Europro did a portable small white machine that looked like a Featherweight in it a case twenty years ago though. And Alphasew actually put out a Featherweight clone a few years back.
I love reviews like these because a lot of people don't have a ton of money to spend on a sewing machine. Personally I got a second hand one that was decent
That little janome looks like a dream. I tried sewing as a kid on my grandma's Brother VX1120 and I blame that machine for me giving up sewing. I wanted desperately to go slow but if tried to gently press the pedal on that machine it would stall but if you pressed hard it would go at a billion miles an hour. It also was incredibly fussy with it's bobbin and trying to sew something like denim gave it fits. I know brother is considered a good brand but Im convinced that that brother was a lemon. How my grandmother tolerated it for years I'll never know but her first old machine was an antique Domestic treadle machine so maybe it just running off electricity was amazing enough for her lol
Thank you for your review! I was about to buy a singer at Michael's today, it was on sale but decided to look online and saw Brother and THAT Paisley one was what I was strongly considering. UA-cam did it again, I searched for this very type of video and yours popped up,, first and only one I watched and I'm sold. THANK YOU for this great review, extremely helpful and to the point. ☺️
Omgosh the brother sewing machine did the same thing to me and I took it back to Walmart and gave up sewing. I was so upset and thought it was me. I was teaching myself how to sew and never went back to sewing until recently I have the desire to try to sew again, but I won't buy another brother but definitely will get one of the other machines you mentioned. Thank you!
Ayyy you tested my Brother sewing machine LX3817!!! I bought mine at Walmart and it worked perfectly out the box. I hope they step up quality control! I have it in gray and I put stickers on it to cover the design. I bought this to make my Halloween costume this year and I have to say it got me hooked! I used it to sew a suede corset with faux leather trim(even ran over the plastic boning). Also made a petticoat and skirt. (bottom tier was 767 inches long) and it handled the tulle and organza like a boss. I have only had an issue once. While sewing a soft minky/faux fur blanket. I broke 3 twin needles while trying to topstitch. Only my singer titanium needles were able to sew through the two layers (4 in corners). Other than that this is very beginner friendly. You don't have to worry about adjusting stitch lengths, it has several straight stich settings and you just pick whichever is appropriate. It has almost all of the most used stitches. It's very easy to thread. Footpedal is easy to control. And it's just a very straightforward "sit down and sew" machine.
Just started getting into upcycles on My clothes… looking for straight stitching and simple handling to do patchwork and just hold together and hemming ty for the info…excited to get started
I just bought the no name electric portable machine, now have to find tutorials on how to use it!! Glad it actually is decent. I need to alter my babies clothes so I prolong the use
Took inspiration from your video and set out on thrift store hunt for used sewing machine. And yes after testing 3 I found, one worked properly with accessories available if needed later on. Thanks for inspiration 👍👍😊
I have the singer m1000 and I’ve used it for about 2.5 years it is still amazing. I used to have the varmax but it didn’t last half a year! They parts kept breaking and the one stitch was just such a hassle. The singer however is in such good shape I’ve made many projects such as leggings, pajamas, and dresses
Thank you for help, your breakdown and comparisons of these machines helped me make up my mind when purchasing my first sewing machine, love your vids keep up the great content!!!
I’m just finding this video and I would go with the no name sewing machine-I really like that one…. When I bought my first sewing machine 18yrs ago I was learning to sew and haven’t done much sewing since till recently and I’ve got a Babylock denim
[5. Electric Portable] Mine broke 3rd time for about 15-20 times using it . When it works it does it well, same as when it brakes :\ I'm going to sell it now since I'm sick of repairing it and will buy something a bit better. Besides that nice video!
Joann has a 25$ restock fee. Also I love that Janome. My one con was that it didn’t have carry handle. I’ve bought that no name and it just didn’t work at all.
Thanks for the video. As a beginner i am interested in the Brother LX. But since i am a beginner, never used one in my life- will it be really obvious that the machine is Bad, or only an experienced person can tell? Would appreciate any clear red flags to look out for, thank you.
There’s nothing really bad about the Lx. You’ll only want a more advanced one when you need more stitches or to sew thicker materials than it can sew. That may never happen.
@@BlueprintDIY Thanks Angelina! I was concerned in knowing the red flags you saw since you mentioned your first LX had to be returned to Walmart, I wanted to know if a beginner like me will be able to tell if it was malfunctioning. I recently found your channel, and Subscribed! 😀
Love your reviews and close ups of the stiching. Bummer that Brother doesn't have hand control. I can't imagine doing without that. Nice stiches when it works. That tiny plastic thing works amazing, but too many nylon parts and I am afraid it will die too soon for me. The Janome has an impressive bit of metal inside and I would have no problem making button holes with just zig zag and no special settings, so I guess the Janome wins. Funny: she says the Janome also doesn't have hand control, but it looks like there is a fly wheel on the side. Hmm.
Ok both the Brother and the Janome have a fly wheel: my definition of "hand control". The kind of hand control you are talking about is a power on go switch on the machine rather than foot control.
The machines i was excited a out and looked up are 1) sold out or 2) FAR more expensive NOW (Janome no longer offers the exact model, but the nww version is 150 - 200, so a combo od the challenges 😢) As a newbie, i may try the "no brand" as a new piece to start on, instead of similar price off of Marketplace. 😒😊🤞🤞
I'm starting a patch jacket and my mom handed me the LX3817. I know you said it'll do 8 layers of denim (holy moly), but do you think it would do ok with a patch on top of 1-2 layers of denim? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I really have no idea where to start with sewing really or what would be safe for the machine.
I am shocked about the machine that sews the 8 layers I really expected the Singer to be the one......I love that Brother though and Singer are my favorites
I was wondering if you could recommend a sewing machine. I’m not a professional I just need to be able to hem my own pants and I need a and overlay function . Maybe you can reccomend ?
Thanks for the review I see a few I did like but question.. I have a grand baby she is 9 and interested in learning to sew .. I don’t know where to begin
You can start by having her sew straight lines on fabric or even paper. Then make a pillow or something simple like that. After that could be very simple doll clothes.
My granddaughter started by making simple scrap quilt patchwork squares and made potholders. It gave her the confidence to use the machine without worrying about ruining or wasting fabric. She also made a patchwork cover for a sofa cushion. Later she made table runners for Christmas and placemats for me with fabric she bought. That was 25 years ago.
Used machines are great. I would recommend researching the model to make sure it’s good and make sure all parts are included. If something is missing, search the part on Amazon on EBay to see how expensive it is. You can also download most old manuals online as well.
With 50 years experience repairing sewing machines, Any of these will make a beginner into a discouraged never sew again person. These are toys. For a beginner, if you don't have the money for a real machine now, save up. Pay $50.00 for 1 of these and it's money wasted. 8 layers of flat denim is an old sales trick. Try to hem a pair jeans with one of these. None will. Now I haven't tried any of these machines. Don't need to. Bet they have plastic hooks. 1 needle strike and you're done. Name brand means very little to nothing at this level but I would say Janome has made pretty good stuff for a long time. For a beginner, check family members and see if they have a machine you can use to learn. If not, Buy from a local dealer, not a department store. The dealer may have a used machine. New or used the dealer will be more but you get tons of knowledge and backup from him. He wants you to learn and become a pro because he has lots of items he can sell you. Internet shopping is for experts only.
I am a sewing machine technician and we always test the widest zigzag on 8 layers of denim on every machine except Babylock and Brother bc they they have a lighter needle bar and it can damage it, so if you do a lot of denim, don’t do a beginner Brother. Also, some of those Brothers dont have a chassis and a plastic hook so service is basically impossible. They are meant to be thrown away. I would always recommend a Janome. They are like Hondas, do the job well and are easy to fix with out breaking the bank
I saw a sewing machine tech take apart a singer, brother and Janome, to compare the parts inside. His professional opinion was, the Janome will last longer, had better quality parts. But he also said that any European sewing machine would be better than a singer or brother also. I liked this tech, he wasn’t affiliated with any brand. He fixes machines in his house.
@@SparkyOne549 yeah, the place I work at we don’t discriminate either, we sell eight different brands, and fix all of them no matter what. Yes, and no to the European brands. You have to be really careful, because Pfaff, Viking and singer are all owned by the same company, SVP. In fact, some of the best Viking machines are actually secret Janome‘s. Janome builds machines for basically every single company out there, except for Bernina’s, however Janome also actually makes the Bernette line to Bernina specifications so it can get tricky. As a beginning sewist tho, keep it simple
Thanks! I bought the brother LX a couple months ago and I am all ready to upgrade. I want a Janome HD3000 because I neeeeeeed to get through layers on thick fabric. I'm glad to get feedback that Janome is a good brand! I appreciate it when professionals share their insider knowledge!
My first sewing machine as a beginner was a brother sewing machine almost same as u showed here.Still working after 16 years but it cant sew thick fabrics. Then I bought jamone which works like a dream..... quiter, smoother ,faster, stitches multiple layers, excellent stitch definition and runs like a Mercedes.
Girl... thank you!! I have been researching, reading reviews for months!!! Terrified to buy my 1st machine and I'm on a budget! You are an angel!! Thank you thank you thank you! I definitely subscribed. Will be watching more of your videos. So grateful to you! 🥰
I think I'm going to go with the brother Lx3817! I loved this video and the denim layer test is crucial to know when buying a sewing machine, so I'm elated that you shared those details with us! 8 layers though and some denim needles and I don't think I'll have ANY problems with hemming and mending and taking them in. As well as my other projects I have lined up. This is going to be my first ever sewing machine and I'm so excited, I hope to make a few small projects from scratch too, like maybe a skirt or basic dress...who knows where this will take me, maybe ill get a new hobby as well.
You're amazing!!! I just found your channel today... I never sewed before, so I'm now learning, hoping to be "self taught' .. maybe haha!!! I just bought the Brother Lx3817 based on your recommendation, from your link in your bio... i'm SO excited! Looking forward to learning SO much more from you lady! You're appreciated! THANK YOU
I have an idea-I hope it works-for having no reverse stitch. Maybe, at the end of a seam, you could keep the needle in the down position, turn, the fabric 180 degrees, then go a few stitches over the last stitches you already did, then go back the original way
Great reviews. I have a friend that has that Singer M1000, I used to have the Janome in purple (gave it to a little girl to start sewing) and now all my machines are Brothers. Love them all.
I learned to sew in school (I was never the best seamster (male version (?) of seamstress LOL), so I was looking for Singer or Brother or Juki ones for home use, without all the bells and whistles, that weren't that expensive... Hard to find. But your video just guided my way to Janome and Varmax and that purple no-brand one.
I haven't used a sewing machine in 45 years. I have been thinking about going back to sewing. When I did sew I made everything I wore, from my underwear to my outerwear. When I was sewing, I used the Singer's brand. Thank you for this comparison.
My 7 year old grand daughter went to a one week sewing camp during the summer and she now wants a sewing machine. This comparison video was very helpful. What do you recommend for a child? She said I do t want a toy sewing machine.. I want a real one 💕
Then I’d get her the Brother or the Singer I showed briefly at the end. Those are both full sized and have everything she needs to continue her learning without getting frustrated.
Please get her a real sewing machine! I gave one of my Brother machines to my granddaughter when she was 8 and she made patchwork potholders as a first project. She learned all the basics and now she's a mom and makes or mends her children's clothes. Still using the same machine I gave her 25 years later.
Thank you, my lady. This video was very helpful, and you really dropped all the information. Now i can fix my mom's clothes!! new follower, we loved your charisma, btw. Love from a Colombian heart 😂❤️
My mom had a portable kenmore and only sewed by necessity (but was fairly skilled) but she wouldnt let me touch her machine. Then she sold her machine and bought a slightly newer kenmore in a table at a garage sale (mid 70s vs early 80s. And the swap happened mid 90s) and she finally begrudgingly allowed me to use the newer machine, but it hated everyone and everything and often you had to cut projects out of the bobbin. I didnt own my own machine until i was in my mid 20s (05?) and picked up a lower end bernette. While this finally allowed me freedom to teach myself to sew, i regret the purchase. It was far too expensive for what it was. I used it for 15yrs and donated it to high school sewing club when i “upgraded” it with janome HD-5000. Id picked out janome HD model a decade prior as my ideal machine because i prefer non computerized. Meanwhile, i got a lust for vintage and now own a singer 501 rocketeer, singer featherweight, singer 185, necchi supernova, necchi lydia, and a janome 3/4th hello kitty machine. Vintage are made so much better, but you need to be willing to accept quirks and tinker which most newbies are scared to do. Most inexpensive plastic machines are pretty garbage, anything you find at walmart or joanns will be junk. I really really like janome mech machines for entry level, but they do tend to range in the 400 dollar pricepoint. Ive picked up most of my vintage machines for free-200 bucks but since pandemic the prices shot through roof. I would say any machine that gets you excited to sew is a good one, but if you are looking for brand new entry level go with janome. If you like to tinker keep eye out for vintage machines (anything predating 60s tends to be good. After they have nylon gears and are prone to chewing themselves to bits) And if you can buy local, or sit down and try out several at a local store it would be ideal, but sew/vacs are a dying breed and even big ones cater to quilters and want to push high end computerized machines and dont carry many mech ones.
I’ve been subscribed to you for years because I’ve always had an interest in sewing and designing clothing. I’m finally ready to go for it and my boyfriend wants to see also. It’s so ironic that you just posted this video as we are searching for a sewing machine to get started. Thank you!
the LX3817G is gray, and the A is light blue. There are a few different colors on this one. I have this machine, it's a good beginner machine. My problem is my tendons in my ankle, they seize up from surgery and chronic pain, so I either go too slow on the foot pedal or speed demon my way into oblivion. I think I might get an electric with speed control to do some scrap pieces. I think I'm moving into quilting, honestly. I have so many scraps it makes more sense. Just my two cents. Great video!
I get a cramp in my foot when I sew a lot. I have been turning the pedal around front to back, so that I am pressing down with my heel instead of the front of my foot. Maybe that will help you.
Excellent video. I think the best is the Brother LX is the winner but I also liked the Janome but the fact that it can make buttonholes is very important to me and since it doesn’t making the buttonholes is a disappointment. Thanks for sharing all demonstrations and your valuable information about those machines.
Hi! I learned how to sew in a 1970s Singer Machine with only 3 o 4 types of stitches so when I bought the mini sewing machine (varmax) with no accessories for only 10 dollars, I actually loved it. I repeat... TEN, only 10 USD for a machine, bobins, chalk, needles and a pedal, is a pretty great deal. In medicine it would be a cost/benefit win. I've made baby sheets, courtains, and small arrangments to my own clothes. I am now using the Janome 3016 and I still don't love it because I'm so used to my mom's old zig-zag metallic Singer. I wish I had the space and the money to buy a good overlock+straight combo but for now I think I'll continue watching your videos until I can decide. PS: I bought the mini machine in Latin America's eBay but it's easy to be found in websites like aliexpress for 12-20 dollars with minimal accessories.
Speaking from personal experience, do NOT waste your money on the varmax mini sewing machine. The thread kept getting stuck in the machine or snapping, the tension is hard to adjust, and its overall just a huge headache just for one stitch pattern. Trust me, its worth it to spend a bit extra to get a nicer machine with more stitches
This is helpful. I learned on my mom's vintage Kenmore, which was new back then in the 70's, but I still tend to compare all machines to that Kenmore. It was set down into the sewing table and I loved having that large flat plane to lay the piece out on. It sewed through anything and everything we've made. She still has it, and it still gets near daily use. The plastic ones feel and look cheap to me.
@@BlueprintDIY Probably not, but I am watching the marketplace to see if an older one comes up for sale. I am hoping that after Christmas, those who got upgrades will be selling their beloved older machines and I can find one then.
Yay, I have the exact brother paisley and all. I like it a lot and have had it for about 2 years with no problems. So happy I purchased a good machine.
I've been trying to decide between the brother lx3817 and the janome new home easy to use and I don't know which to get and I watched you review the janome in another video and you put brother the highest in this video so i dont know where they stand against each other? Can you tell me which you would think is best for a beginner?
New subscriber! I love Brother machines but I’m looking to purchase a new one. As a kid I loved to sew but had less time for hobbies during school so now I want to get back to sewing
I bought the Singer M1000 six months ago. Worked great until today. Symptoms: Will not sew. Light comes on, dims, comes back on, dims again. Cords in great condition. Good connections. Tried a different outlet. Still not sewing. Help. I cannot find this problem on the internet or a solution. Thanks!!!
My other granddaughter has the Varmax - I had a really difficult time trying to help her to use it. I agree the thread was extremely difficult to pull and the needle kept breaking … it made what was suppose to be a fun learning session- very frustrating
Thank you goddess much love and positive vibes!!!!! (We’re more subs and supporters later, and I’m still thrilled with your videos!!! ;) you simply motivate my creativity

Yours is the best one seen😅
I have this one 8:18 but I found it hard to use
But there are no pedals as beginners
Tfs
Pls how much is brother machine
It was $85
Kk tnx
What are your thoughts on getting an used machine rather than a new one?
Used machines are great. I would recommend researching the model to make sure it’s good and make sure all parts are included. If something is missing, search the part on Amazon on EBay to see how expensive it is. You can also download most old manuals online as well.
@@BlueprintDIY thanks! And for a beginner would you recommend a new one or used one? Or does it even matter?
Those are all junk
I am a sewing machine technician and we always test the widest zigzag on 8 layers of denim on every machine except Babylock and Brother bc they they have a lighter needle bar and it can damage it, so if you do a lot of denim, don’t do a beginner Brother. Also, some of those Brothers dont have a chassis and a plastic hook so service is basically impossible. They are meant to be thrown away. I would always recommend a Janome. They are like Hondas, do the job well and are easy to fix with out breaking the bank
Thanks for the info. Getting a Honda of sewing machines sounds like the perfect plan!
What do you suggest for a beginner beginner
My first sewing machine as a beginner was a brother sewing machine almost same as u showed here.Still working after 16 years but it cant sew thick fabrics. Then I bought jamone which works like a dream..... quiter, smoother ,faster, stitches multiple layers, excellent stitch definition and runs like a Mercedes.
Hi, do you mind me asking which model exactly is the jamone you purchased?
Thanks
Please which model of jonome dis you buy
Which model of Janome?
Which model?
Girl... thank you!! I have been researching, reading reviews for months!!! Terrified to buy my 1st machine and I'm on a budget! You are an angel!! Thank you thank you thank you! I definitely subscribed. Will be watching more of your videos. So grateful to you! 🥰
Same here!
Sameee! Ty ty!!!!
Me four 😂

I think I'm going to go with the brother Lx3817! I loved this video and the denim layer test is crucial to know when buying a sewing machine, so I'm elated that you shared those details with us! 8 layers though and some denim needles and I don't think I'll have ANY problems with hemming and mending and taking them in. As well as my other projects I have lined up. This is going to be my first ever sewing machine and I'm so excited, I hope to make a few small projects from scratch too, like maybe a skirt or basic dress...who knows where this will take me, maybe ill get a new hobby as well.
helloo did you buy it? im wondering if you were happy with it or not because i may buy it too
You're amazing!!!
THANK YOU
Yayyy! Congrats on the new sewing machine! 🎉
I love that you don't make any of them sound like "oh if you bought this one, you're out of luck." Thank you for being approachable and honest.
I have an idea-I hope it works-for having no reverse stitch. Maybe, at the end of a seam, you could keep the needle in the down position, turn, the fabric 180 degrees, then go a few stitches over the last stitches you already did, then go back the original way
Yes, that would work 👍🏾
I have the same Brother sewing machine! She has lasted almost a decade now! I have sewn quilts, clothes, bags, you name it!
how? mine gets tired afther a little bit of sewing and starts skipping stiches and then just not stitching
Did you sew some denim on it? If yes, how it went? I’m thinking about buying one, and i love to sometimes sew denim.
Thanks so much! I’m so glad to help.
After they have nylon gears and are prone to chewing themselves to bits)
And if you can buy local, or sit down and try out several at a local store it would be ideal, but sew/vacs are a dying breed and even big ones cater to quilters and want to push high end computerized machines and dont carry many mech ones.
I’ve been subscribed to you for years because I’ve always had an interest in sewing and designing clothing. I’m finally ready to go for it and my boyfriend wants to see also. It’s so ironic that you just posted this video as we are searching for a sewing machine to get started. Thank you!
Yayyy, I’m so glad you’re starting your journey. I wish you ALL the best!
Definitely agree about the Janome. I had one for a short time and it was really fun to use!
Newbie disgruntled with what's in stores want the creative mind to spring forth now. Looking forward to a new creative learning lifestyle 😊
the LX3817G is gray, and the A is light blue.
Yes, I feel the same about the Janome. If it did a buttonhole, it would be perfect.
Commenting for the algorithm.😊 This was super helpful for a beginner!
I appreciate that so much!! 🫶🏾
This was so helpful I been trying to find a good machine to start me on my journey and you’ve even me a couple options!
So glad 👍🏾
Speaking from personal experience, do NOT waste your money on the varmax mini sewing machine. The thread kept getting stuck in the machine or snapping, the tension is hard to adjust, and its overall just a huge headache just for one stitch pattern. Trust me, its worth it to spend a bit extra to get a nicer machine with more stitches
Pls is there any tabletop sewing machine that's both electric and nonelectric?
This is helpful. I learned on my mom's vintage Kenmore, which was new back then in the 70's, but I still tend to compare all machines to that Kenmore. It was set down into the sewing table and I loved having that large flat plane to lay the piece out on. It sewed through anything and everything we've made. She still has it, and it still gets near daily use. The plastic ones feel and look cheap to me.
I don’t know if anything new will live up to vintage standards.
@@BlueprintDIY Probably not, but I am watching the marketplace to see if an older one comes up for sale. I am hoping that after Christmas, those who got upgrades will be selling their beloved older machines and I can find one then.
@@PinkTigger33 I recently bought a 1960s Singer with the cabinet and it was so well taken care of it looks almost new. I paid only $40 dollars for it.
@@annarodriguez9868 Congratulations! That is so exciting. Enjoy your new vintage baby.
Thank you , I am a beginner and I decided I want to go with the colorful one 😊
Did you end up buying it ?
@@va.j no ended up getting a free singer off marketplace
New subscriber! I love Brother machines but I’m looking to purchase a new one. As a kid I loved to sew but had less time for hobbies during school so now I want to get back to sewing
I just got a Brother for Christmas. I’m so excited to sew with it. I wanted a simple machine that didn’t have an exuberant amount of stitches or tech.
That’s a good choice for what you wanted 👌🏾
I am looking for a machine to make bags and which one do you think is good for me to buy pls
Hello can you do a video on brother sewing machine innovis ? Thanks
Thanks!!!
I’m so sorry to hear that! Mine is currently out of commission as well. I haven’t had the time to diagnose it.
My other granddaughter has the Varmax - I had a really difficult time trying to help her to use it. I agree the thread was extremely difficult to pull and the needle kept breaking … it made what was suppose to be a fun learning session- very frustrating
That’s what I was worried about 🤦🏾♀️
Thank you so much for doing this video. You make me want to learn to use a sewing machine for real 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🌹❤️
You can do it! 😄
