@Notso Baddrummeronce they probably just moved with the times...wood is temperamental and needs lots of maintenance and careful handling. Today's mor synthetic materials are stronger. Not too sure why we've become increasingly sharprer, but the tuning of yhe pipes and the way we approach it has improved a lot.
The pitch of the side drums has changed a lot since then too. Do you know why that is?
