We didn't know what history we were witnessing, but at the same time we did. I'm very grateful to have seen this band, at that point in time. If only we had known that was pure bliss.
One of my buddies was in that crowd; he was in the USAF, stationed in Munich at the time. Someone - I don't remember who - had to go on after U2 that night, and he felt sorry for them.
As a Black American when I first heard IN THE NAME OF LOVE (PRIDE) it took my breath away. And even now when I hear the song it brings water to my eyes.U2 is my favorite band in the world; their great gift of music is pure Sunshine and Pure joy.I'm sure Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. would love U2 too!

Younger Irish folk may not appreciate it but for a lot of Irish around the world in the 1980's and 1990's U2 were one of the only things we could be proud of. They put the country on the map again. A fantastic, fantastic group.
You are Irish? I am American with Irish heritage and U2 was not the only band we could be proud of, try Stiff Little Fingers and Cactus World News. Two other bands that, as much as I love U2 could have mopped the floor with U2.

Cant believe how focused they are here. Bono was a ripe old age of 24. You can see the determination in his face and the band sounds incredibly tight. Perfect crowd as well.

I totally agree...the peak of the U2 i was listening to growing up..The Joshua tree they took a different route which made them superstars..but i loved the War/ The Unforgettable Fire era
I was proud of U2 and I am American. I was 16 in 1980 and was proud of their stance and their music. Why should anyone have a grief over them? They sang true to their experience. Compare that to modern music. We were LUCKY.

U2 are one of those rare bands where it’s the original line-up or nothing, if one member was run over crossing the street and was no longer around the band would instantly, and permanently, end. Another band like that was Led Zeppelin: when John Bonham died the band was done.

Always love the Edge playing New Years Day on piano and guitar its so cool since both the piano and guitar parts are what make the song so good. Then standing up for the for that soaring guitar solo is always one of the best moments in the any U2 concert.
Saw them on this tour in Manchester, England - still by far the best gig I have been to. It was euphoric, transcendent, incredible...I have never known a band have a such a rapturous effect on an audience.
Forty four years ago the music industry needed U2 to show what rock music could be and why it was still relevant to our lives. This is another great concert performance.
Damn, hard to believe that this was almost 40 years ago! Doesn't get any better than this with bands like U2, The Alarm, etc... so much power, drive, angst, and sweat. Miss the 80's and these bands, truly a great era of music! And Bono certainly had one of the best mullet's around :)

I saw them play in 1987 during the Joshua Tree Tour and they closed with 40. The crowd continued to sing exactly like this even after the show ended as we walked out of the stadium. I've seen many, many bands play since then but nothing compares to the charisma, positivity and connection they have with their audience.

Ashwin Ramdas This is my U2. The honest, meaningful and relevant U2. This band couldn't have written "Until the End of the World" or "One", given their sophistication. However, I remember Edge criticizing The Clash in 1983 for having become parodies of themselves. I couldn't stand U2 post 1991, ironically because they became willful parodies of themselves. Having a hedge fund principal as a lead singer would do that to a politically self aware band.

Some years ago i forgiven. But i still identify with this part of the U2 history. THIS IS MY U2 BAND. Azabaxe Been a fan and seeing them perform since 1983, Yeah, they do that to themselves today sometimes since 1991 but even U2 can't hide their own raw energy, indescribable talent, and magnificent power they possess during their live performances when they decide to quit messing around, put their game faces on, stop with the fluff for a few numbers and get real like they used to. I was at their first U.S. show of Songs of Innocence Tour in San Jose, after they got their groove on after a few numbers they went back to basics and blew away the audience. A strictly musical and vocal performance, when Bono began PERFECTLY singing "Every Breaking Wave" with Edge hitting those haunting piano notes- the house was brought down. A lot of people there didn't even know what the song was that Bono was singing and they were still into it.
Romansilvercoin I saw that tour in 4 different cities (Toronto, NYC, Belfast, and Dublin), and EVERY time that they played that, the audience was damn near silent. Also with far more people that I'd have expected singing along, given the backlash that that album received, due to the release methodology. The same goes for Raised By Wolves! Damn near everyone there seemed to not only know the song, but to reeeaaaalllly be into it!
Bono did loose his incredible range and clear and concise way He /we was alot younger and at younger age, the strain over years r hard BUT MIRICLE notice after his Da passed Bono S voice miraculously was restored a gift his Da bestowed onto him after passing Bono believes it is why His voice came back thank you!!!Incredible brings me to tears and my knees!

If I could only be at one U2 gig, it would be difficult but I'd pick this one. 1984 unforgettable Fire Bono is a beautiful thing to behold, in everyway. And his vocals, wow! Even when he was wailing, he stayed on key! Did those people in the audience know how lucky they were?

Just a few months away from the Live Aid show. if you go to a U2 concert, you get a show. Its not just 3 guys in jeans and t-shirts acting like they are playing in the basement, they practice this stuff. Excellent show every time I have seen them.
The Unforgettable Fire album tour is really special. They were big,, about to become huge. I had seen them just a couple of years earlier on the Boy tour and whew...had they grown! They had this incredible connection with their audience. As a fan off the early years they just sort of felt to me like they were "my band". I grew up right along side of them, same age, same year, same questions and passions. Their shows were a room full of people who I think felt the same. Sure do miss that original energy and ambition from them.
3 instruments, vocalist - together much greater than the sum of their parts. Such great music! Always sounds so fresh….and their live performances are representative of their passion.
WOW...This is 28 years old! I was in college when these guys were on the rise...I remember how much we all loved their music then (every one of these songs). If I went out and saw this show tonight I would still love it and consider it to be among the best I have ever seen! One of the GREAT bands of the modern era for sure...Their songs are as good and as powerful now as they ever have been! For my taste, Bono is one of the top 5 frontmen of all time...No question...

Totally agree with what you said about Bono just absolutely belting it out in Bad. My sense is this was the concert where the video for A Sort of Homecoming was shot. Same outfits to my recollection. And I don't care what anyone says, this haircut on Bono was the absolute greatest. As cool as could possibly be. Still love this band, no matter what. Cheers.

i actually saw u2 in 1982 as the opening band for j geils band. I never heard of them until then but they were special, you just knew when you saw them. bono asked the audience if they wanted to hear a couple songs they already played for their encore because he said they played all the songs they had! lol! they played I will follow again!
Bono's voice was at it's best during The Unforgettable Fire, more mature than War but raw and incredibly powerful, he could do anything with it., It's such a shame that he lost that voice during Lovetown, way too soon
I don't know if he lost his voice that early, I just believe that it wasn't utilized the same way in the '90s as it was in the past. Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop all focused on Bono singing in lower registers. The Fly and Lemon both feature Bono singing a falsetto, and both sound incredible.
Marc Al He lost it during the early part of Joshua Tree Tour. That's why they didn't perform Red Hill Mining Town live even though it had a video in play on MTV and was a single.

17:03 Bad the friend Bono is talking about is Andy Rowen who lived opposite Bono when he was growing up and at 10 years old was caught in an IRA or loyalist bomb ( can't remember which) in Dublin with his father doing deliveries in his van, the doors of the van were blown clean off and little Andy witnessed bodies and body parts everywhere in the street -he turned to heroin to cope with the trauma later in life. As far as i am aware he is still alive and has conquered his demons and now works in Prisons /rehab.

SIMPLY FANTASTIC. U2 older releases are almost across the board better, but it's nostalgia that keeps me coming back. Seeing LiveAid live helps fuel that feeling. For you lot who've not witnessed the best times of U2's career, you did indeed truly miss out on special times.

ive watched this so many times in the last 8 months or so and gotta say its my very favorite, Live aid 85 and 2009 concert in Ireland both second..i love the excitement of this audience and Bonos connection with them, really shows his humility and heart..when i read nasty crap about him having a huge ego i must disagree, he worked hard to get where he is today, at their start they were rejected many times but their perseverance paid off and their music,so unique and flavorable grabbed our hearts in a spiritual ,good way..I love them and nothing can change that😍😍😍😍

I take in a deep breath and the poetry and music has me finding my genius and love of life all over again. This is by far my favorite concert...You guys put it down like no one on the Planet. The Edge is just a Beast-Genius who makes us all be happy to be alive just to hear his wonderful sound only he has.

However, I remember Edge criticizing The Clash in 1983 for having become parodies of themselves. I couldn't stand U2 post 1991, ironically because they became willful parodies of themselves. Azabaxe This is also my U2. I am a fan of U2 from this times and in the early 90´s i still U2 because they transform yourselves to the opposite of everything they are in the 80´s. Some years ago i forgiven. But i still identify with this part of the U2 history. THIS IS MY U2 BAND. And i hope that the time machine be invented before i died to can travel to this and others U2 concerts.
Azabaxe Been a fan and seeing them perform since 1983, Yeah, they do that to themselves today sometimes since 1991 but even U2 can't hide their own raw energy, indescribable talent, and magnificent power they possess during their live performances when they decide to quit messing around, put their game faces on, stop with the fluff for a few numbers and get real like they used to. I was at their first U.S. show of Songs of Innocence Tour in San Jose, after they got their groove on after a few numbers they went back to basics and blew away the audience. A strictly musical and vocal performance, when Bono began PERFECTLY singing "Every Breaking Wave" with Edge hitting those haunting piano notes- the house was brought down. A lot of people there didn't even know what the song was that Bono was singing and they were still into it.
Romansilvercoin I saw that tour in 4 different cities (Toronto, NYC, Belfast, and Dublin), and EVERY time that they played that, the audience was damn near silent. Also with far more people that I'd have expected singing along, given the backlash that that album received, due to the release methodology. The same goes for Raised By Wolves! Damn near everyone there seemed to not only know the song, but to reeeaaaalllly be into it!
I saw them on this tour in Milan (February 1985) and they were (and still are) a force of nature!

Bonos voice was too hoarse during this tour so much that he lost his range in the high 2 middle notes

Just a few months away from the Live Aid show. if you go to a U2 concert, you get a show. Its not just 3 guys in jeans and t-shirts acting like they are playing in the basement, they practice this stuff. Excellent show every time I have seen them.

The Unforgettable Fire album tour is really special. They were big,, about to become huge. I had seen them just a couple of years earlier on the Boy tour and whew...had they grown! They had this incredible connection with their audience. As a fan off the early years they just sort of felt to me like they were "my band". I grew up right along side of them, same age, same year, same questions and passions. Their shows were a room full of people who I think felt the same. Sure do miss that original energy and ambition from them.
3 instruments, vocalist - together much greater than the sum of their parts. Such great music! Always sounds so fresh….and their live performances are representative of their passion.
WOW...This is 28 years old! I was in college when these guys were on the rise...I remember how much we all loved their music then (every one of these songs). If I went out and saw this show tonight I would still love it and consider it to be among the best I have ever seen! One of the GREAT bands of the modern era for sure...Their songs are as good and as powerful now as they ever have been! For my taste, Bono is one of the top 5 frontmen of all time...No question...

Totally agree with what you said about Bono just absolutely belting it out in Bad. My sense is this was the concert where the video for A Sort of Homecoming was shot. Same outfits to my recollection. And I don't care what anyone says, this haircut on Bono was the absolute greatest. As cool as could possibly be. Still love this band, no matter what. Cheers.

i actually saw u2 in 1982 as the opening band for j geils band. I never heard of them until then but they were special, you just knew when you saw them. bono asked the audience if they wanted to hear a couple songs they already played for their encore because he said they played all the songs they had! lol! they played I will follow again!

Bono's voice was at it's best during The Unforgettable Fire, more mature than War but raw and incredibly powerful, he could do anything with it., It's such a shame that he lost that voice during Lovetown, way too soon
I don't know if he lost his voice that early, I just believe that it wasn't utilized the same way in the '90s as it was in the past. Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop all focused on Bono singing in lower registers. The Fly and Lemon both feature Bono singing a falsetto, and both sound incredible.
Marc Al He lost it during the early part of Joshua Tree Tour. That's why they didn't perform Red Hill Mining Town live even though it had a video in play on MTV and was a single.

17:03 Bad the friend Bono is talking about is Andy Rowen who lived opposite Bono when he was growing up and at 10 years old was caught in an IRA or loyalist bomb ( can't remember which) in
Dublin with his father doing deliveries in his van, the doors of the van were blown clean off and little Andy witnessed bodies and body parts everywhere in the street -he turned to heroin to cope with the trauma later in life. As far as i am aware he is still alive and has conquered his demons and now works in Prisons /rehab.

First heard them in the 5th year social room on an old record player in 1984 and now listening to them on my mobile. How things have changed yet still the same.

SIMPLY FANTASTIC. U2 older releases are almost across the board better, but it's nostalgia that keeps me coming back. Seeing LiveAid live helps fuel that feeling. For you lot who've not witnessed the best times of U2's career, you did indeed truly miss out on special times.

ive watched this so many times in the last 8 months or so and gotta say its my very favorite, Live aid 85 and 2009 concert in Ireland both second..i love the excitement of this audience and Bonos connection with them, really shows his humility and heart..when i read nasty crap about him having a huge ego i must disagree, he worked hard to get where he is today, at their start they were rejected many times but their perseverance paid off and their music,so unique and flavorable grabbed our hearts in a spiritual ,good way..I love them and nothing can change that😍😍😍😍
